Campgrounds and RV parks near Hardin, TX

The main draw is Big Thicket National Preserve, which protects one of the most biologically diverse landscapes in North America. There are approximately 40 miles of hiking trails that wind through the preserve, and hiking trails and waterways meander through nine different ecosystems, from longleaf pine forests to cypress-lined bayous. Paddling, birding, and fishing are all popular. Paddlers use Pine Island Bayou, Village Creek, and the Neches River corridor for flatwater trips through cypress swamp. The Lance Rosier Unit - Big Thicket National Preserve, immediately east of Hardin, is one of the most botanically rich units and is used for hiking, birding, and seasonal hunting under NPS rules. Day trips from a Hardin base can reach Beaumont museums, the Big Thicket Visitor Center near Kountze, and Gulf Coast beaches within roughly a two-hour drive. Anglers target bass and catfish on the Neches and Trinity river systems.

Southeast Texas has a humid subtropical climate with hot, sticky summers and mild winters. The busiest seasons around Big Thicket are spring and fall, particularly on weekends, due to milder temperatures, and this pattern carries over to RV parks throughout Liberty and Hardin counties. Book earlier for October and April weekends. Cooler months from roughly October to April bring milder temperatures and lower insect pressure, making them the preferred window for hiking and paddling. Visitors should be prepared for mosquitos and the weather, as Texas is a hotbed of humidity and heat during the summer, so summer travelers should plan for early-morning activity and heavy repellent. Late spring through early fall is Gulf hurricane and tropical-storm season, and inland flooding from tropical systems can affect low-lying campgrounds and Big Thicket units. The preserve has previously suspended issuance of backcountry camping and other special use permits ahead of tropical storms, so check National Hurricane Center advisories and NPS alerts before travel between June and November. Winter is generally open and quiet, with occasional freezes and rare ice events.

Expect flat terrain, dense pine and hardwood cover, and slow-moving creeks. Roads into Big Thicket units are mostly paved to the trailheads, but interior access roads can be sandy or rutted after rain. Large rigs should stick to designated RV parks along US-90 and confirm site length and turning access when booking. Insects are the defining nuisance. Bug spray is a must, and ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes are active most of the year. Bring repellent and long sleeves for evening hours. Wildlife includes deer, wading birds, snakes, and alligators in bayou systems. Give alligators wide berth on the water and along creek banks. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the preserve, so download offline maps before heading out.
