Camping near Highlands, Texas
Highlands sits in eastern Harris County along the San Jacinto River, less than 20 miles east of downtown Houston and just off Interstate 10. The location gives RV travelers quick access to Houston attractions while keeping them on the quieter, river-lined edge of the metro area. Most nearby campgrounds are private RV parks catering to big rigs, snowbirds, and families rather than tent campers.
San Jacinto Riverfront RV Park anchors the immediate area, a large riverfront property with full hookups, pull-through sites, and family amenities. Houston Leisure RV Resort and Red Ear River-Boat & RV Park offer additional full-hookup options close to the interstate, while Wildwood Lakes RV Park and East Park Village RV Park round out the choices for travelers who prefer smaller, quieter properties.
For public land, the closest overnight camping is at Lake Houston Wilderness Park in New Caney, a City of Houston park with cabins, screened shelters, and walk-in campsites but limited RV infrastructure. Most visitors use the private parks in Highlands as a base and treat Lake Houston Wilderness Park as a day-use option.
Things to do near Highlands
The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site is the marquee attraction, home to the 567-foot San Jacinto Monument and a 1,200-acre battlefield with a self-guided driving tour, hiking, birdwatching, and fishing. The battleground is open daily, with the museum and monument open Wednesday through Sunday. Battleship Texas is no longer moored at the site and is undergoing restoration off-site.
The San Jacinto River and nearby lakes support boating, kayaking, and bass fishing, and several area RV parks have their own boat ramps and fishing access. Lake Houston Wilderness Park adds more than 20 miles of hike-and-bike trails plus separate equestrian trails.
Downtown Houston attractions, including Space Center Houston, the Museum District, and the Houston Zoo, are a short drive west on I-10.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel around Highlands. Daytime highs sit in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and both seasons draw the largest campground crowds. Spring thunderstorms are common and can be intense, so travelers should watch forecasts for severe weather and flash-flood advisories, particularly in low-lying river areas.
Summers are hot and humid. Average August highs at Houston Intercontinental peak near 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with heat-index values much higher and afternoon thunderstorms typical from May through October. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in August and September, so RV travelers should track the National Hurricane Center outlook and confirm each park's evacuation policy.
Winters are mild and short. Highs typically reach the 60s Fahrenheit, hard freezes are uncommon at this latitude but do occur, and winter is the driest part of the year. Snowbird demand climbs from December through February at the larger private parks, and long-stay sites can fill months ahead.

We had a great time with our granddaughters. They really wanted an "RV" trip and this coach wowed them. Each had their own bunk. They loved that the coach had everything their home has. The coach drove smoothly once I got used to the handling and the owners were very easy to deal with and helpful.

Mike and Tammy were great. This was my first time renting and driving an RV. They went out of there way to make my experience as smooth as possible. I would definitely suggest Mike and Tammy and this RV to others!

How to book near Highlands
Private RV parks around Highlands accept direct bookings by phone or through each operator's website, and larger properties such as San Jacinto Riverfront RV Park and Houston Leisure RV Resort also list on third-party platforms like Good Sam and RoverPass. Reservations are recommended year-round and are effectively required during spring, fall, and the winter snowbird season. Ask about big-rig access, pull-through length, and 30/50-amp availability when booking.
Lake Houston Wilderness Park handles reservations through the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department; bookings are made by contacting the park office.
Texas state parks in the broader region, including nearby Sheldon Lake State Park for day use, use the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system online or by phone.
What to expect near Highlands
Most Highlands-area RV parks are level and paved or graveled, with full hookups, 30/50-amp service, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Larger properties such as San Jacinto Riverfront RV Park and Houston Leisure RV Resort typically include pools, laundry, bathhouses, and playgrounds; smaller parks like Wildwood Lakes RV Park and East Park Village RV Park are quieter and more basic. Many parks host a mix of overnight travelers and long-term residents.
Expect humidity, mosquitoes, and fire ants for much of the year; pack repellent and check sites before setting up. Alligators, snakes, and other wildlife are present in the river and lake areas, so keep pets leashed and supervise children near water.
Highway noise from I-10, freight-train horns, and ship-channel activity are audible at some parks. Cell coverage is generally strong on major carriers.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Highlands%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Highlands, TX?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Highlands for virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license if the rig's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) tops 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers in the Highlands area come in well under that. RVezy approved drivers must be 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from another state or country? Your home license is honored in Texas, so just pack it, grab your trip confirmation, and you're road-ready.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat kind of protection comes with my RV rental in Highlands?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Highlands comes with an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive off knowing the big stuff is handled. During checkout, you'll choose the protection level that fits your trip, and that selection covers most accidental damage to the RV itself. It's a meaningful financial safety net that takes the stress out of renting a motorhome on the Gulf Coast. Consider a higher protection tier if you're tackling a longer Houston RV trip or driving an unfamiliar Class A for the first time, a small upgrade for serious peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Highlands RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy has a clear, guest-friendly cancellation policy that applies to every booking, including a money-back grace period right after you book. The exact refund amount depends on how far out from your trip you cancel and whether something like a hurricane or tropical storm impacts your dates (something to keep in mind during Gulf Coast hurricane season from June through November). You'll see the full policy details during checkout, and RVezy support is available if conditions change unexpectedly. Book early to lock in the best Highlands rigs, then keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center if you're traveling between August and October.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Highlands?
Absolutely, and you'll have plenty of options. Many hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Highlands, and you can find them quickly using the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page. Once you spot a listing you like, message the host to confirm any extra cleaning fee, pet deposit, or breed notes. The area is great for travel with dogs: Galveston Island State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and the beach, Sheldon Lake State Park has shaded walking paths just 20 minutes from Highlands, and the San Jacinto Battleground area welcomes leashed pups too. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl. Gulf Coast humidity hits hard, and your pup will thank you on those summer afternoons.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/galveston-islandCan the RV be delivered straight to my campsite in Highlands?
Yes, RV delivery in Highlands is one of the easiest ways to skip the driving stress entirely. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig to your campground, a friend's driveway, or an event site, then handle setup and walk you through everything once they arrive. It's perfect if you're first time renting an RV, flying into Houston Hobby or Bush Intercontinental, or booking a tailgate near NRG Stadium. Common drop-off spots from Highlands hosts include Houston Leisure RV Resort, San Jacinto Riverfront RV Resort, Galveston Island State Park, and Lake Houston-area campgrounds. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who offers it, and message the host with your destination so they can quote you an accurate delivery fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Highlands%2C%20TexasHow far can I drive on a Highlands RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got real freedom to roam. Each host sets their own mileage policy, with most Highlands listings including 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer trips. From Highlands you can reach Galveston Island in about 45 minutes (50 miles), Sam Houston National Forest in 90 minutes (75 miles), Brazos Bend State Park in just over an hour (60 miles), Lake Livingston State Park in around 90 minutes (80 miles), and Austin in roughly 3 hours (165 miles). Pro tip: check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you're planning an RV road trip from Highlands toward New Orleans or San Antonio, ask the host about unlimited mileage upgrades.
txdot.gov/Where should I camp during my Highlands RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice among the best campgrounds near Highlands. Right in town, Houston Leisure RV Resort offers full hookups, a pool, and big-rig sites just minutes from I-10. San Jacinto Riverfront RV Resort sits along the river with shaded sites and fishing access. About 45 minutes south, Galveston Island State Park offers beachside and bayside sites with electric and water hookups. For a forest escape, head to Huntsville State Park, about 90 minutes north, with shaded sites among pine trees. Book Texas State Parks up to 5 months ahead through the Texas State Parks reservation system, especially for spring and fall weekends when sites disappear fast.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/galveston-islandWhen is the best time to visit Highlands, TX in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Highlands is mid-October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to upper 70s and humidity finally takes a break. February through April is especially gorgeous for Gulf Coast trips with average highs from the upper 60s to upper 70s and wildflower season in full swing. Summers (June through September) are seriously hot and humid, with August averaging highs near 93°F and heat indexes that can climb past 110°F, so plan early-morning drives and shore-power sites with strong air conditioning. Pro tip: November and December are quietly magical here, with mild weather and easier campsite availability across the Houston metro and Galveston Island.
weather.gov/hgx/I've never driven an RV before, how do I feel ready by pickup day?
You're in better hands than you think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane, slide-outs, water systems, generator, and how to hook up at a campground, and you can message them anytime with questions before your trip. For your first time renting an RV near Highlands, consider a Class C motorhome or travel trailer instead of a Class A; they drive much more like a large truck. Practice in a quiet lot before tackling I-10 or the I-610 Loop. Pro tip: book a delivered rig to Houston Leisure RV Resort or Galveston Island State Park for your first trip so you can skip city driving entirely and focus on enjoying the campsite.
txdot.gov/safety.htmlWhat if something breaks down during my RV trip near Houston?
Take a deep breath, you're not alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on I-10, a dead battery at Brazos Bend State Park, or a tow off the Sam Houston Tollway is just a phone call away. Your host is also your direct lifeline for quirks specific to their rig (the generator switch, the awning, the fridge mode), and RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup and save your host's number to your favorites. Five minutes of prep saves a ton of stress on the road.
dps.texas.gov/section/highway-patrolCan I take my Highlands RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Cross-state road trips are wide open. From Highlands, popular routes head east into Louisiana (New Orleans is about 5.5 hours via I-10), west to San Antonio and the Hill Country (3 hours), or north into Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most hosts allow interstate travel; just confirm in your messages before booking so you can align on mileage. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage stops at the border. If you're dreaming of an RV road trip from Highlands toward Big Bend National Park or Padre Island National Seashore, those are both fantastic Texas-only options that keep you fully protected. Pro tip: build in a buffer day for the drive home, Texas is bigger than it looks.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for in a Houston-area RV?
Budgeting is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A coaches usually run 7 to 10 mpg. Texas typically has some of the cheapest gas in the country, often 20 to 40 cents below the national average, and Highlands sits right off I-10 with plenty of truck-friendly stations at Crosby and Mont Belvieu exits. For a 4-night Galveston loop in a Class C (roughly 200 miles), plan on $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before turning south on I-45 toward Galveston Island, since prices tick up closer to the coast and at the island's limited stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Highlands?
The earlier the better, especially for the headliners. Texas State Parks like Galveston Island, Brazos Bend, and Huntsville open reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks & Wildlife reservation system, and spring weekends (March through May) and holiday weekends often sell out the same day they open. Private parks like Houston Leisure RV Resort and San Jacinto Riverfront RV Resort usually book 2 to 6 weeks out for peak season. For a fall or winter trip, you can often grab sites 1 to 2 weeks ahead. If your dream park is full, set up an availability alert and check on Tuesday mornings, when cancellations frequently pop back into the system.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Highlands and the Houston metro?
Driving an RV around Highlands is manageable once you know the lay of the land. I-10 runs right past town and is your easiest route east to Beaumont or west into Houston, while the Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8) and I-610 Loop can get congested during rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.), so plan your departures around those windows. Watch for low clearances under older downtown Houston overpasses, particularly anything under 12 feet, and avoid the narrow streets of the Heights or Montrose in a big rig. Gulf Coast thunderstorms can roll in fast from May through September. Pro tip: use the Texas Department of Transportation's DriveTexas site to check for I-10 construction or flood closures before you roll out.
drivetexas.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Highlands?
Most RV parks near Highlands are full-service and well-equipped for any size rig. Houston Leisure RV Resort, San Jacinto Riverfront RV Resort, and Highlands RV Park all offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Galveston Island State Park has water and electric hookups plus a centralized dump station, restrooms with hot showers, and a fish-cleaning station. For free water fills and dumps along your route, most Buc-ee's locations near Baytown and Mont Belvieu have dedicated RV lanes too. Pro tip: in a Texas summer, always confirm the campground has 50-amp service if you're in a larger Class A, since both AC units running hard on a 95-degree afternoon will trip a 30-amp pedestal fast.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/galveston-island/fees-facilitiesWhat features come standard in a motorhome rental in Highlands?
You'll be amazed at what's packed into a modern motorhome rental in Highlands. Most RVs sleep 4 to 8 with a mix of queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes, and come with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave), a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, a furnace, and dedicated seatbelts for travel passengers. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies, so if you need to work on the road, message the host about hotspot options. Pro tip: Houston's summer humidity is no joke, so prioritize listings with dual AC units or 50-amp service for true comfort at Gulf Coast campgrounds.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Highlands hosts offer some great extras to round out your trip. Common add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bedding and towel kits, generators, kayaks, fishing gear, and bike racks, with most fees ranging from $10 to $50 per item. Pickup logistics are flexible too: meet at the host's home, arrange delivery to your campground (popular spots include Houston Leisure RV Resort and Galveston Island State Park), or coordinate around an airport arrival. Mileage policies vary by listing, so check the included nightly miles before booking and ask about overage rates if you're planning a longer haul. Pro tip: bundle the bedding/kitchen kit with your booking so you can roll into Galveston with nothing more than a duffel bag and your sunscreen.
visithoustontexas.com/things-to-do/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy directly using a credit or debit card, with a portion charged at booking and the balance typically due a few weeks before your trip. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup; the amount is set by the host and listed on the page. As long as the RV comes back in the condition you picked it up in, the deposit is released after your trip. Do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup and snap photos or a quick video of any existing scuffs. Five minutes of documentation protects everyone and keeps your deposit return smooth.
