Campgrounds and RV parks near Jamaica Beach, TX

The Gulf beach is the main draw. Swimming, surf fishing, and shell collecting are standard, and beach access inside Galveston Island State Park is quieter than the county-managed pockets closer to the seawall. West Bay, salt marshes, and Oak Bayou support paddling and birding. Galveston Island State Park offers three paddling trails ranging from 2.6 to 4.8 miles, along with kayak launches, nature trails, and an interpretive center. The park sits on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and is a well-known migration stopover. Families often split time between the campground and Galveston proper. Moody Gardens, the Pleasure Pier, Schlitterbahn waterpark, and the Strand historic district are all within a twenty- to thirty-minute drive east on FM 3005 and Seawall Boulevard.

Galveston Island is a year-round camping destination, but conditions shift sharply by season. Spring and fall bring the mildest weather and the strongest demand from Texas RVers. Weekends between March and May book out weeks in advance at Galveston Island State Park, and holiday weekends fill every private park in the area. Summer is hot, humid, and busy. Steady southerly winds off the Gulf help temper the heat, but shade is limited on the beachside loops and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak tropical activity from August into October; when tropical systems threaten the upper Texas coast, the state park can close and reservations may be cancelled with little notice. Winters are mild and the least crowded time to visit. Daytime highs typically sit in the low sixties, hard freezes are rare, and the January mean temperature is about 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Weekly and monthly rates are available at the state park bayside from November through February, and strong cold fronts can push through with heavy rain, high winds, and coastal flooding.

Sites near Jamaica Beach are open and exposed. There are very few mature trees on the west end of Galveston Island, so campers should plan for constant wind, full sun, and salt spray on rigs parked near the beach. Awnings can take a beating in gusty conditions, and slide toppers should be watched during storms. Hookups vary. Private parks along FM 3005 generally offer full water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric on concrete or gravel pads. Galveston Island State Park offers water and electric at RV sites, with a dump station in the park and no sewer at individual pads. The bayside loop uses a communal pavilion and shared ground fire rings rather than a picnic table at every site. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance year-round on the island, and biting flies are common after wet weather on the bay side. Campers should pack repellent, keep pets leashed, and stay on marked boardwalks in the marsh.
