Campgrounds and RV parks near Jasper, TX

Sam Rayburn Reservoir is the main draw. The lake is one of the top largemouth bass fisheries in Texas and hosts tournaments year-round, with boat ramps, marinas, and guided trips readily available. B.A. Steinhagen Lake, adjacent to Martin Dies Jr State Park, offers quieter paddling and cypress-lined shoreline fishing on the Neches and Angelina rivers. On land, Martin Dies Jr State Park has over seven miles of hiking and biking trails through bottomland hardwood forest and Big Thicket habitat, plus ranger programs, paddling tours, and star parties. The surrounding Angelina National Forest and Big Thicket National Preserve add longer hiking loops and primitive backcountry options. In town, visitors can stop at local barbecue and seafood spots, restock supplies, and drive the scenic loop around Lake Sam Rayburn.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Jasper. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists the busy season at Martin Dies Jr State Park as September through Thanksgiving and March through Independence Day. Mild temperatures make March through May popular with anglers chasing the pre-spawn and spawn bass bite on Sam Rayburn, and campsites at the state park fill quickly in late spring and early fall. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms and heat indices frequently above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Sites with shade and 50-amp service book quickly because most travelers need continuous air conditioning. Mosquitoes and biting flies are heaviest near the lakes from June through August. Winter is mild but wet, with occasional cold fronts that drop nights near or below freezing. Many private parks stay open year-round, and hunting seasons in the surrounding national forest and wildlife management areas bring a steady flow of RVers from November through January. Fall color in the hardwood bottoms peaks in mid to late November.

Expect tall loblolly pines, sandy soil, and biting insects near the water. Pack repellent and screen protection, and plan for humid evenings even in shoulder seasons. Cell coverage is generally usable in town and around the KOA, but drops in wooded loops inside the state park and along forest roads. Hookup levels vary. Private resorts on Sam Rayburn typically offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service. State park sites are water and electric, with a central dump station rather than sewer at each pad. Quiet hours at Martin Dies Jr State Park run nightly from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Roads into some Corps of Engineers and national forest campgrounds are narrow with low branches, so drivers of larger Class A rigs should confirm site length and approach with the campground before booking.
