Campgrounds and RV parks near Midway South, TX

Wildlife and birding drive most day trips. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Estero Llano Grande State Park, and the World Birding Center sites in Weslaco and Mission draw visitors chasing green jays, chachalacas, and hundreds of migratory species. South Padre Island beaches sit about an hour and a half east on Highway 100. Inside the resorts themselves, the social calendar is the attraction. Pickleball, shuffleboard, heated pools, billiards rooms, and recreation halls anchor most parks, and dances, craft shows, potlucks, and line-dancing lessons run through the cool season. Day trips to Nuevo Progreso across the border for dental work, pharmacies, and restaurants remain popular, and golf courses are scattered throughout Weslaco, Mercedes, and Mission.

The Rio Grande Valley runs on a snowbird calendar. Peak season stretches from late October through March, when the resorts fill with monthly and seasonal guests escaping northern winters. Winter days are typically mild, with highs in the low 70s Fahrenheit and lows in the low 50s. Hard freezes are rare but possible, and occasional cold fronts can push temperatures down for a day or two. Spring shoulder season, March into May, brings warmer days, wildflowers, and the tail end of migration. By June the region turns hot and humid, with heat indices routinely above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Many resorts remain open year-round but run at low occupancy, and activity programs generally pause. Late summer through fall is the wettest stretch and coincides with Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and can send tropical moisture and occasional named storms into deep South Texas. September is the wettest month, averaging around 130 millimeters of rainfall. Travelers should watch tropical forecasts from June through November.

Expect flat, paved, pull-through sites built for larger rigs, with mature palms and citrus trees providing partial shade. Full hookups including sewer, 30 and 50 amp power, and cable or Wi-Fi are standard at the larger resorts. Tent camping is uncommon in this part of the Valley. The demographic skews older. Many parks operate as 55-plus communities with quiet hours, gated entries, and structured activity programs. Families with young children in an RV rental will find more flexibility at parks that accept all ages, so confirm age policies at booking. Border Patrol checkpoints operate on northbound US-77 and US-281 heading out of the Valley, so carry identification for all passengers. Cell service and grocery access are strong throughout the Weslaco, Alamo, and McAllen corridor.
