Campgrounds and RV parks near Mikes, TX

Birding is the headline activity. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park anchors the World Birding Center, and its trails, bird blinds, and observation tower give families a good chance of spotting green jays, chachalacas, and migrating raptors from November through February. Beyond birding, families can explore the Rio Grande hike-and-bike trail, tour the National Butterfly Center, cross into Nuevo Progreso for a day of shopping and food, or drive an hour east to South Padre Island beaches. Golf courses, farmers markets, and Mexican-American cultural events in Mission, McAllen, and Pharr fill out shoulder-season itineraries. Inside the state park, private vehicle traffic is restricted, so visitors move around on foot, by bicycle, or on the park tram.

The Rio Grande Valley is one of North America's premier winter RV destinations. From October through March, tens of thousands of Winter Texans migrate south for mild days, cool nights, and low rainfall. Peak bookings run December through February, when private parks fill with seasonal residents and long-stay rates dominate availability. RV renters planning a winter trip should reserve well in advance. Spring brings warm, dry weather and the tail end of migration through May, with generally easier campground availability once seasonal guests head north. Wildflowers and citrus bloom across the valley. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs routinely near 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the region's heaviest rainfall arriving in late summer and early fall. Atlantic and Gulf tropical systems can bring flooding rain from June through November, and travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park runs a reduced tram schedule Thursday through Sunday from May through October and a daily peak-season schedule from November through April.

The landscape is flat, agricultural, and heavily developed for RV living. Sites at parks like Bentsen Palm RV Park and Bluebonnet RV Resort typically offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and shared amenities such as pools, laundry, and recreation halls oriented toward long-stay guests. At Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, private vehicles must stay in the parking lot; visitors reach the interior by foot, bicycle, or the park tram. The access road is uneven, and the walk-in primitive camping area sits about three-quarters of a mile from the parking lot. Expect Spanish and English in equal measure, easy access to Mexican groceries and restaurants, and Border Patrol checkpoints on highways heading north out of the valley. Bring binoculars, sun protection, and insect repellent year-round.
