Campgrounds and RV parks near North Alamo, TX

The signature attraction is Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, 7 miles south of Alamo on FM 907 and a quarter mile east on Highway 281. The 2,088-acre refuge sits at the intersection of two major migratory routes and offers over 14 miles of trails and 7 miles of biking tours, along with a visitor center, observation tower, and suspension bridge. Birding is the main draw, with resident species like green jays, chachalacas, and orioles, and hundreds of butterfly species recorded on the refuge. The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge complex adds additional tracts nearby for hiking and wildlife photography. The Gulf of Mexico is less than two hours east, with Port Isabel and South Padre Island offering swimming, deep-sea fishing, and beach time. The border town of Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, and the shops and restaurants of McAllen and Mission are all within easy reach.

The Valley runs on a Winter Texan calendar. Mild winters attract seasonal visitors, locally known as Winter Texans, who typically stay from November through March. This is peak season for the area's RV resorts, and popular parks fill months in advance with long-term reservations. Spring shoulder season, roughly late March through May, brings warm days and strong bird migration through Santa Ana and other refuges before summer heat sets in. Most parks operate year-round despite summer temperatures regularly exceeding 95°F with high humidity, so June through August is the quietest and least comfortable stretch for outdoor activity. Fall reopens the season. The area receives moderate precipitation annually, with a distinct pattern of wetter conditions in the fall, and precipitation is generally low, often arriving in brief showers. September is the wettest month, with average rainfall reaching about 93 mm, and it coincides with Atlantic hurricane season, worth watching when planning a trip near the coast.

Expect established RV parks rather than wooded campgrounds or state-park sites. The Rio Grande Valley camping experience centers on full-hookup resorts with flat, paved or gravel sites, mature citrus and palm plantings, and clubhouse-style amenities including pools, laundry, pickleball, shuffleboard, and craft rooms. The crowd skews older in winter, with organized activities, potlucks, and dances built into daily life at larger resorts. Families traveling with kids will find fewer playground-focused parks in the immediate area but easy day trips to South Padre Island and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. Cell coverage and Wi-Fi are generally reliable across the McAllen metro. It is hot and humid most of the year, and heat exhaustion can occur very rapidly, so plan outdoor time for early morning and carry water, sun protection, and repellent for mosquitoes near the refuges.
