Campgrounds and RV parks near Olivarez, TX

Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco is a 230-acre state park in Hidalgo County that opened in 2006 and is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. At the geographic center of the World Birding Center network, Estero Llano Grande in Weslaco attracts a spectacular array of South Texas wildlife with its varied landscape of shallow lakes, woodlands, and thorn forest. The park has more than 5 miles of trails through wetlands, ponds, woodlands and thorn scrub, and about 2 miles of trail are wheelchair accessible. More than 350 bird species have been documented in the park. Beyond birding, visitors can cross into Nuevo Progreso, Mexico for a walkable border town visit, tour local museums, or drive to South Padre Island beaches about an hour east. Golf courses, flea markets, and citrus groves are common in the mid-Valley, and downtown McAllen offers larger shopping and dining options within a 30-minute drive. Most RV resorts in the area, including Snow To Sun RV and MH Resort and Victoria Palms RV Resort, host organized activities such as shuffleboard, pickleball, dances, and card rooms during the winter season.

The Olivarez area has two clear travel seasons. Winter, from roughly November through March, is the peak RV season. Daytime highs typically sit in the low 70s Fahrenheit and nights stay mild, drawing tens of thousands of winter Texans to the Rio Grande Valley. January, February, March, November and December typically offer the most optimal weather in Weslaco, while June, July, August and September tend to have less optimal conditions, and Weslaco has a distinct dry season from January to April. Summer is hot and humid. Average high temperatures from May through September are above 90°F and average lows are above 70°F, with relatively high dew point values, and heat index values can consistently reach over 100°F during these months. Many snowbird-focused resorts run reduced programming in summer, though sites are widely available. September is the peak of the north Atlantic hurricane season and tends to be by far the wettest month, averaging about 5.64 inches of rain. Travelers in late summer and early fall should watch tropical forecasts and plan flexible arrivals.

Expect large, well-established RV resorts geared toward long-term winter guests rather than weekend campers. Sites are typically level concrete or gravel pads with full hookups, and many parks include heated pools, hot tubs, clubhouses, fitness centers, and organized social activities. Common amenities include swimming pools, shuffleboard courts, billiards rooms, and card rooms. The terrain is flat and easy for big rigs, and most parks accept large coaches. Cell coverage is strong throughout the mid-Valley and Wi-Fi is widely available at resorts. Mosquitoes and biting midges can be heavy after rain, especially in late summer and fall. Border proximity means Border Patrol checkpoints are common on highways heading north out of the Valley. Travelers should carry identification and, if crossing into Mexico, a passport.
