Campgrounds and RV parks near Palmhurst, TX

Birding drives most outdoor activity in the Valley. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park offers trails, bird blinds, and an observation tower, and the World Birding Center network extends to Estero Llano Grande State Park near Weslaco with wetland and woodland habitat. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Alamo is another top stop, with more than 14 miles of trails and a seasonal tram. The National Butterfly Center in Mission has walking paths through gardens that attract hundreds of butterfly species. Families can add a day trip to South Padre Island, roughly 70 miles east, for beaches, fishing, and water sports. Closer in, Mission and McAllen offer golf, shopping, and Tex-Mex dining, and the international bridge at Progreso provides a straightforward border-town day trip.

The Rio Grande Valley has a hot semi-arid climate: mild winters and very hot, humid summers. High season for RV parks runs roughly November through March, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s Fahrenheit and Winter Texans fill long-stay resorts. Many parks near Palmhurst are 55-plus and reach near-full occupancy from January through early March, so monthly sites should be reserved well in advance. Spring shoulder season, from mid-March through May, brings warming temperatures, spring bird migration, and easier last-minute booking as seasonal residents head north. Summer is the low season for tourism: afternoon highs frequently exceed 95 F, humidity is high, and thunderstorms become more common. Fall is the wettest part of the year, with September typically the rainiest month and Atlantic hurricane season peaking from August through October. Storms rarely make direct landfall this far inland, but heavy rain and tropical moisture from systems moving up the Gulf can affect travel plans.

Expect flat terrain, palm trees, and a strong retiree community atmosphere at most local resorts. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are standard, and many parks include a pool, clubhouse, laundry, and an organized activity calendar with potlucks, games, dances, and craft groups during the winter season. Sites tend to be closer together than at rural state parks, and quiet hours are enforced. Some parks, including options like El Valle Del Sol and J-Five RV Park, cater to longer stays and monthly guests, so short overnight sites can be limited during peak months. Cell coverage and grocery access are strong throughout the Mission and McAllen area. Summer visitors should plan for shaded sites, strong air conditioning, and mosquito repellent, especially after rain.
