Campgrounds and RV parks near Penitas, TX

Wildlife viewing anchors the area. About 360 species of birds have been reported at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, along with butterflies, javelinas, and bobcats. To protect the natural environment, cars are not allowed inside the park; visitors leave their vehicle at headquarters and explore on foot, by bike, or by tram. The park offers 7 miles of trails, including 3.5 miles of park road open to bikes and foot traffic, and the 1.8-mile Rio Grande Trail is wheelchair-accessible. Beyond Bentsen, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Estero Llano Grande State Park, and Quinta Mazatlan sit within a short drive and are part of the broader World Birding Center network. Day-trip options include shopping and dining in McAllen, cultural sites in Mission, and a longer run east to South Padre Island.

The Valley runs on a snowbird calendar. Winter Texans, visitors from outside Texas who spend the cold months in the Rio Grande Valley, may stay for a few days, weeks, months, or the entire winter season, roughly October through March. December through March are the most popular months, though some arrive as early as October. Sites at established resorts fill early, and many long-term guests rebook a year in advance. Summer is the off-season for RV travel. From June through September, daytime highs regularly reach the mid-90s Fahrenheit with high humidity, and rainfall peaks in June and September. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with tropical moisture occasionally reaching inland to the Valley from the western Gulf. Spring and fall are transitional. Spring brings warm days and thinning crowds after Winter Texans depart in March and April; fall sees the wettest weather and the first arrivals of returning snowbirds in late October.

Expect a flat, palm-lined landscape with citrus groves, resacas, and thornscrub. Most RV parks near Penitas are large, well-maintained properties with full hookups, paved or gravel pads, clubhouses, laundry, and pools. Many are 55+ resorts mixing RV sites for motor homes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers with permanent park models, and some hold several hundred sites and extensive amenities. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is different from a typical RV park. Camping there is at primitive walk-in sites, with restrooms and showers available in the park. The park store closes at 4:30pm and the last park shuttle runs at noon; arrivals after that must walk or bicycle into the park with their camping equipment, roughly three-quarters of a mile from the parking lot. Border Patrol checkpoints on US-281 and US-77 north of the Valley are routine. Cellular coverage is strong across the corridor, and grocery, fuel, and medical services cluster in Mission and McAllen.
