Progreso runs on a Winter Texan calendar. The high season stretches from roughly November through March, when northern snowbirds occupy long-stay sites at parks across the Valley. Many resorts fill weeks or months in advance during this window, and most organized activities, dances, potlucks, craft shows, and tour programs are scheduled inside this period. Daytime temperatures in winter are usually mild, though short cold fronts can push lows close to freezing for a night or two. Spring shoulder months in March and April still see strong birding traffic, especially during spring migration, but the seasonal residents begin heading north. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs commonly in the mid-thirties Celsius and a notable jump in rainfall. Late summer and early fall fall within the Atlantic hurricane season, and tropical systems occasionally track into the Lower Rio Grande Valley. September is typically the wettest month of the year.

Most RV parks within a short drive of Progreso are age-restricted 55+ communities with a strong seasonal-resident culture. Expect a mix of permanent mobile homes, park models, and RV sites on the same property, with activity directors running scheduled events through the winter. Amenities commonly include heated pools, shuffleboard, pickleball, dance halls, laundry, and Wi-Fi, though specifics vary by park. Sites are generally level with full hookups and paved or hard-packed pads suited to large rigs. The terrain is flat, summers are humid with mosquitoes, and shade trees are common but not universal. Traffic into Nuevo Progreso increases sharply on weekends through the winter season, so plan border crossings accordingly.
