Camping near Sam Rayburn, Texas
Sam Rayburn is a small community on the south shore of Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Jasper County, deep in the East Texas Piney Woods. The lake sits on the Angelina River and is the largest reservoir wholly within the state of Texas, covering roughly 114,500 acres. It is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, and is bordered by the Angelina and Sabine National Forests.
The area is a fishing and boating destination first. Sam Rayburn Reservoir is nationally recognized for its largemouth bass fishery and hosts hundreds of tournaments each year. Extensive shoreline gives visitors ample room for lakefront camping and picnicking.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive of the town. Private parks include Rayburn RV Hideout, Sam Rayburn Marina Resort, Brookeland / Lake Sam Rayburn KOA Holiday, Powell Park Marina, and Country Club Park RV Resort, most sitting close to the water with hookups and boat access. Corps of Engineers parks around the lake add lakefront sites with electric and water hookups at developed campgrounds such as Ebenezer, Twin Dikes, Rayburn, San Augustine, Mill Creek, and Hanks Creek.
Things to do around Sam Rayburn
Bass fishing drives most trips here. Anglers launch from marina ramps and Corps ramps for largemouth, crappie, catfish, and bream, and tournament weigh-ins are a regular feature at the larger marinas. Powell Park Marina and Sam Rayburn Marina Resort put boaters on the water within minutes of check-in.
Beyond fishing, the lake supports swimming, boating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, birdwatching, and horseback riding. Corps-managed shoreline trails connect to longer routes in the adjacent Angelina National Forest, most open to hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
In spring, neotropical birds such as warblers and vireos pass through the lake area en route from the Gulf, making the shoreline productive for birding. Brookeland / Lake Sam Rayburn KOA Holiday and Country Club Park RV Resort work well as base camps for families splitting time between the lake and the surrounding forest.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. Days are warm rather than hot, humidity is lower than midsummer, and bass fishing is at its most active. Spring also brings tournament traffic, so weekend sites at lakeside parks can fill early.
Summer is peak family season. Summers around Sam Rayburn are hot and humid, with afternoon highs commonly in the low 90s Fahrenheit. Expect afternoon thunderstorms, warm lake water, and full campgrounds on holiday weekends. Shaded sites and full hookups with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing for air conditioning.
Winter is the quiet season. Nights can drop near freezing, but daytime highs are often mild enough for fishing and hiking. At some Corps parks, a portion of sites remain open year round while others operate from March 1 through Labor Day weekend, so availability at Corps campgrounds narrows in the cold months. Private parks like Rayburn RV Hideout typically stay open with a smaller crowd.
How to book campgrounds near Sam Rayburn
Corps of Engineers campgrounds around the reservoir are booked through the federal system. Reservations are made at 1-877-444-6777 or Recreation.gov, generally up to six months in advance. Sites with hookups and lakefront placement tend to go first, especially for weekends between March and July, when all Corps sites at parks like Rayburn are reservable.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Sam Rayburn Marina Resort, Powell Park Marina, and Country Club Park RV Resort take reservations directly by phone or through their websites, while Brookeland / Lake Sam Rayburn KOA Holiday uses the KOA reservation system. Rayburn RV Hideout is a smaller operation, so calling ahead is the reliable path.
For tournament weekends and holidays, book six to eight weeks out. Confirm rig length, slide clearance, and pull-through availability when reserving, since older lakefront parks can have tight interior roads.
What to expect on-site
Most private parks near Sam Rayburn offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, a dump station if not at every site, and direct or near-direct lake access. Marinas add fuel, bait, launch ramps, and covered slips. Cell coverage is generally usable but can be patchy in wooded coves.
Corps parks around the reservoir are simpler. Rayburn Park, for example, has 49 campsites that include pull-through 50-amp sites, back-in 30-amp sites, and non-electric sites, plus a waterborne shower, vault restrooms, a dump station, and three boat launches. The Sam Rayburn Project Office no longer accepts cash payments for USACE-operated campgrounds or boat ramps.
Expect pine shade, sandy or clay soil, mosquitoes in warmer months, and occasional wildlife including deer and raccoons. Quiet hours are enforced at Corps parks.

swf-wc.usace.army.mil/samray/What license do I need to rent an RV in Sam Rayburn, Texas?
Great news for first timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sam Rayburn, TX. Texas does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers or fifth wheels you'll find on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before your trip. Then it's straight to the Piney Woods and Sam Rayburn Reservoir.

RVezy offers multiple protection tiers that you (not the host) select at checkout, helping cover accidental damage to the RV during your trip. Booking is lower risk than you'd think. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in that lakefront weekend with confidence. After the grace period, your refund depends on how far out your trip is and the policy tier applied to your booking. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. You'll see the full terms during checkout, and RVezy's support team is available before, during and after your trip. Pro tip: book early for spring bass tournaments at Umphrey Pavilion, then relax knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Sam Rayburn RV rental?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Plenty of hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental Sam Rayburn travelers can book in a couple of taps. Just toggle the 'Pet-Friendly' filter when searching, and message the host if you have a larger breed or more than one dog. Once you arrive, leashed pets are welcome throughout most U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks around the reservoir, including Twin Dikes, Rayburn Park and San Augustine Park, with shaded pine-tree campsites that stay cooler than open Texas prairie. Pro tip: pack a long lead so your dog can lounge lakeside while you cast for largemouth bass from your campsite.
swf-wc.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Lakes/Sam-Rayburn-Reservoir/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite at Sam Rayburn?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Sam Rayburn campers rely on, dropping the rig directly at popular spots like Twin Dikes Park, Ebenezer Park, San Augustine Park or Rayburn Park, then leveling it, hooking up water and 30/50 amp power, and walking you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight pine-shaded site, and no figuring out the awning on your own. Use the 'Delivery' filter on RVezy to see hosts who serve your campground. Pro tip: ask about a stocked-and-ready package so you arrive to a cold fridge and made beds.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233790How far can I drive on a Sam Rayburn RV rental and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got room to roam. Many hosts on RVezy offer generous daily mileage packages, and some list an RV rental with unlimited mileage perfect for a longer Sam Rayburn RV trip looping through East Texas. From the reservoir, Toledo Bend is about 35 miles east, Big Thicket National Preserve is roughly 75 miles south, Galveston beaches are about 200 miles southwest, and Houston is around 150 miles. Check the listing's mileage policy before booking, or simply message the host to confirm your route works within their package. Pro tip: if you're tournament fishing both Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend in one trip, ask up front about a multi-day mileage bundle.
recreation.gov/gateways/505Where are the best campgrounds near Sam Rayburn for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Sam Rayburn for RV camping are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks ringing the reservoir. Twin Dikes Park (north of Jasper on RR 255) offers 30/50 amp sites and a marina next door. San Augustine Park on the Ayish Bayou side has hookup sites, a swim beach and an interpretive trail. Rayburn Park on the north shore offers 50-amp pull-throughs. Ebenezer, Mill Creek and Hanks Creek round out the Corps options with shaded pine-tree sites. Pro tip: reserve through Recreation.gov as soon as the six-month window opens, especially for spring bass tournament weekends.
recreation.gov/gateways/505When is the best time of year for RV camping in Sam Rayburn?
You actually have a long season here. Sam Rayburn sits in the humid subtropical Piney Woods, so RV camping is comfortable from mid-March through late November. Spring (March to May) brings 70 to 82°F days, blooming dogwoods and prime largemouth bass spawn fishing. Fall (October to early November) drops humidity, settles temperatures in the 65 to 80°F range and lights up the hardwoods. Summer is hot and sticky, often 90 to 95°F, but lake swimming and shaded Corps campgrounds keep things bearable. Even winter stays mild, with highs around 55 to 65°F and bald eagles overwintering above the lake. Pro tip: aim for late October for a near-perfect Sam Rayburn RV trip with empty campgrounds and cool nights.
weather.gov/lch/I've never rented an RV before. Is Sam Rayburn a good place to start?
It's one of the best in Texas for first time renting an RV. Roads around the reservoir, like RR 255 and US 96, are wide, flat and lightly trafficked, with no mountain grades or tight switchbacks to wrestle. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, water tanks, slide-outs and awning, and you can text them anytime during the trip. If even that feels like a lot, choose a host with delivery so the rig is already set up at your Corps campground when you arrive. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer in the 20 to 25 foot range for the easiest first drive.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down at Sam Rayburn?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts and tows, whether you're parked at Mill Creek Park or rolling down US 96 toward Jasper. One phone call gets help dispatched to your exact location, and your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirks of their specific rig. Pro tip: as soon as you pick up, snap a photo of the roadside assistance number and tape it inside a cabinet. Cell coverage around Sam Rayburn is generally solid on the main roads but can dip in the Angelina National Forest, so save numbers offline before heading deep into the Piney Woods.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best road trips from Sam Rayburn?
You're perfectly positioned for an East Texas RV road trip from Sam Rayburn. Head about 35 miles east to Toledo Bend Reservoir for a two-lake fishing loop, or drive roughly 75 miles south to Big Thicket National Preserve for cypress swamps and rare carnivorous plants. Galveston Island beaches are about 200 miles southwest, New Orleans is around 270 miles east via I-10, and Austin sits about 260 miles west for a Hill Country detour. Cross-border travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals, so plan trips that stay within the U.S. and confirm route details with your host before booking. Pro tip: a 3-night Sam Rayburn to Toledo Bend to Caddo Lake loop is the ultimate piney-woods triangle.
nps.gov/bith/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Sam Rayburn RV trip?
Easier on the wallet than you'd guess. Class C motorhomes around Sam Rayburn average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically sees 10 to 13 mpg. Texas gas prices generally run below the national average, often $2.80 to $3.20 per gallon in Jasper, Lufkin and Pineland. For a 300-mile round trip from Houston to Sam Rayburn and back in a Class C, plan for roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Jasper or Lufkin before heading to the Corps campgrounds, since stations along RR 255 are few and slightly pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground at Sam Rayburn?
Sooner is smarter, but you've got options. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Sam Rayburn (Twin Dikes, San Augustine, Rayburn, Ebenezer, Mill Creek and Hanks Creek) open a six-month reservation window on Recreation.gov. For spring bass tournament weekends (March through May) and summer holidays, book the day the window opens. Fall weekends and weekdays are usually wide open even a week out. Pro tip: if your dates are full, set a Recreation.gov availability alert. Cancellations are common as tournament rosters firm up. And if you'd rather skip the booking race entirely, message an RVezy host about delivery to a private marina park like Sam Rayburn Marina or Pinecliff Resort.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232685What are driving conditions like around Sam Rayburn?
Driving here is refreshingly low-stress. The main routes (US 96, US 69, TX 63 and Recreational Road 255, aka Sam Rayburn Parkway) are flat, two-to-four lane highways winding through the Piney Woods, with no steep grades or sharp mountain curves. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, logging trucks on weekday mornings, and afternoon thunderstorms in spring and summer that can drop visibility fast. Bridges over the reservoir's arms can get gusty in a tall motorhome, so ease off the accelerator when crossing. Pro tip: download offline maps before leaving Jasper, since GPS can stutter in pockets of the Angelina National Forest. Then settle in for one of the most scenic, easygoing RV drives in East Texas.
drivetexas.org/What amenities do Sam Rayburn campgrounds offer for RVs?
You'll find more comfort than you'd expect deep in the Piney Woods. Most U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks at Sam Rayburn offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, paved or asphalt pads, picnic tables, fire rings, lantern posts, hot showers, flush restrooms and dump stations. Twin Dikes and San Augustine both have dump stations ($5 for non-campers), boat ramps and swim beaches (open April to Labor Day). Full sewer hookups are available at select sites (around $28 per night). To fill fresh water, use the spigot at your site or the dump station fill point. Pro tip: bring a 25 foot drinking-safe hose and a surge protector, since older 30 amp pedestals can vary in voltage.
swf-wc.usace.army.mil/samray/Recreation/Parks/Corpsparks.shtmlWhat's inside a typical motorhome rental Sam Rayburn hosts offer?
More creature comforts than you'd think. Many rigs include a TV, outdoor speakers, a propane grill and a power awning. Wi-Fi varies, and cell hotspots generally work well around the reservoir on major carriers. Pro tip: ask your host whether linens, kitchen kits and camp chairs are included or add-ons, so a campervan rental Sam Rayburn weekend feels turnkey from the second you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sam%20Rayburn%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect from an RVezy host?
You can customize your trip easily. Popular add-ons from Sam Rayburn hosts include linen and towel packages ($25 to $60), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generator hours, propane refills, camp chairs and tables, outdoor grills, bike racks and even fishing kayaks (great for the reservoir's quiet coves). Pickup is usually from the host's home in Jasper, Lufkin, Pineland or Brookeland, and many offer delivery directly to Twin Dikes, San Augustine or Rayburn Park for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing or message the host. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup and a stocked-fridge add-on to step straight from your car into a ready-to-camp family RV trip Sam Rayburn parents will rave about.
recreation.gov/gateways/505How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and transparent, no surprises. When you rent an RV in Sam Rayburn through RVezy, payment is handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform (never cash to the host). You'll pay the rental total at booking, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card shortly before the trip starts. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition, the deposit is released after your trip. Deposit amounts vary by rig, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on size and value. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-through video at pickup and dropoff, including the awning, generator hours and tank levels. It's the easiest way to keep your Sam Rayburn RV trip ending as smoothly as it started.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I dump tanks and fill water around Sam Rayburn?
You're covered all the way around the lake. Low-cost dump stations are available at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks, including Twin Dikes, San Augustine, Rayburn Park and Mill Creek (typically a small fee for non-campers). Potable water fills are at the same stations and at individual hookup sites. Sam Rayburn Marina near Twin Dikes also offers services for boaters and campers. If you're staying off-lake, Jasper and Lufkin have private RV parks with public dump access. Local insider tip: Mill Creek Park in Sabine County tends to be the least crowded dump station on summer Sunday afternoons, when everyone else is lined up at Twin Dikes after a weekend of RV camping Sam Rayburn anglers won't soon forget.
