Campgrounds and RV parks near San Juan, TX

San Juan sits in Hidalgo County in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, tucked between McAllen, Pharr, and Alamo along the US-83 / I-2 corridor. The area is one of the largest RV destinations in North America, drawing snowbirds from the central United States and Canada known locally as Winter Texans. RV parks in the immediate area lean heavily toward long-stay, 55-plus resorts with full hookups, clubhouses, and organized activities rather than short-hop overnight stops. Closest options include Alamo Palms RV Resort and Alamo Rec-Veh Park-Motorhome Park just east in Alamo, Tropic Star RV Resort, Casa Del Valle Motorhome Park, and Roadrunner RV Park. Most sit within a short drive of the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, La Plaza Mall in McAllen, and border crossings into Reynosa and Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. The region markets itself as the Magic Valley for its subtropical winters, citrus groves, and dense concentration of birding sites, making it a practical base for weeks-long stays as well as shorter trips.

Private RV resorts in and around San Juan, including Alamo Palms RV Resort, Alamo Rec-Veh Park-Motorhome Park, Tropic Star RV Resort, Casa Del Valle Motorhome Park, and Roadrunner RV Park, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Many are 55-plus, prioritize seasonal renters, and require deposits for winter stays. For state park camping, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park uses the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, with bookings accepted up to five months in advance. Note that Bentsen offers primitive walk-in tent sites about three-quarters of a mile from the parking area, not drive-up RV hookups; RV travelers typically day-use the park and sleep at a private resort nearby. A Texas State Parks Pass covers entry fees at more than 80 parks for a year.
