Campgrounds near Scissors, Texas
Scissors is a census-designated place in Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley of deep South Texas, sitting between Donna, Alamo, and San Juan just north of the Rio Grande. It is part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metropolitan area, and the surrounding countryside is flat, agricultural, and heavily oriented toward the Winter Texan RV crowd that migrates south from October through April.
RV renters have their pick of long-stay resorts within a short drive. Victoria Palms RV Resort and Koenig's RV Resort sit in nearby Donna, while Palm Shadows RV Park, Bit-O-Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park, and Acacia RV and MH Park serve the same corridor along Expressway 83. Most parks in this region are full-hookup properties geared to monthly and seasonal stays rather than short weekend trips.
Because Scissors itself is small, most trip planning centers on the surrounding cities of McAllen, Weslaco, and Harlingen for groceries, fuel, propane, and RV service. The Mexican border crossing at Progreso is roughly a fifteen-minute drive south.
Things to do near Scissors
The Rio Grande Valley is a top North American birding destination, and Scissors sits close to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco, and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission. These sites are anchors of the World Birding Center network and see peak activity during winter and spring migration.
Families can plan day trips to South Padre Island for the beach, the McAllen Nature Center, and the Quinta Mazatlan urban sanctuary in McAllen. Cross-border shopping at Progreso, citrus stands along US-83, and dance halls and pickleball courts inside the larger RV resorts round out the mix. Golf courses and butterfly gardens are common day activities for Winter Texan renters.

The Valley's calendar is inverted compared with most of the country. Winter is high season: from November through March, snowbird RVers fill parks across Hidalgo County, and long-stay sites at properties like Victoria Palms RV Resort and Palm Shadows RV Park are often booked months ahead. Nightly and weekly availability tightens sharply from January through early March.
Summer is the local off-season. June through September brings triple-digit heat, high humidity, and the Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks in August and September. Many parks stay open year-round but run at low occupancy, and some amenities and activity programs pause until the Winter Texans return.
Spring and fall are transition windows with milder temperatures and strong bird migration. Late spring can be humid and stormy, while October and November offer the best mix of warm days, lower humidity, and open sites before the winter rush.
Booking an RV site near Scissors
Most private resorts in the Donna and Alamo area, including Victoria Palms RV Resort, Koenig's RV Resort, and Bit-O-Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Renters bringing a rig into the region for winter should reserve as early as summer to secure a full-hookup pull-through site.
For state parks in the area, Estero Llano Grande and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley use the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, which opens a rolling five-month window at 8 a.m. Central Time and requires a Texas State Parks Pass or day-use fee on top of the site booking. Federal sites like Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge are day-use only and do not offer overnight camping.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, easy driving on wide roads with heavy RV traffic during winter months. Parks in this corridor are largely 55-plus communities with concrete pads, full hookups, laundry, pools, and activity halls, and they cater to long-term residents. Family renters with children should confirm age policies before booking at Victoria Palms RV Resort, Koenig's RV Resort, or Acacia RV and MH Park.
Cell coverage and grocery access are strong throughout the McAllen-Weslaco corridor. Mosquitoes are active most of the year, sun exposure is intense, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from late spring through fall. Travelers heading into Mexico at Progreso should carry a passport and check current State Department guidance before crossing.
