Camping near South Alamo, Texas
South Alamo sits in Hidalgo County in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, a subtropical corner of deep South Texas within a short drive of McAllen, Pharr, and the Mexican border. The area is flat, agricultural, and heavily oriented toward long-stay RV travelers, with citrus orchards, produce stands, and dozens of full-hookup parks lining US-83 and the surrounding farm roads.
RV renters have several nearby options tailored to different trip lengths. Alamo Rose RV Resort and Acacia RV and MH Park are close-in choices in Alamo itself, while Koenig's RV Resort, Bit-O-Heaven RV and Mobile Home Park, and Palm Shadows RV Park serve travelers looking for larger community-style resorts common to the Valley.
South Alamo is best known as the closest town to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, a 2,088-acre remnant of subtropical Rio Grande riparian forest along the river. That refuge, together with the wider Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge complex, defines the outdoor character of the area and draws most visiting RV travelers.
Things to do near South Alamo
The main attraction is Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, about seven miles south of Alamo on FM 907. Trails are open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, with more than 14 miles of foot trails, a 7-mile auto and biking loop, an observation tower, a suspension bridge, and a seasonal open-air tram. The refuge is a top birding site, with resident green jays, plain chachalacas, and great kiskadees, plus heavy spring and fall raptor and warbler migration.
Beyond the refuge, visitors can explore other Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge units, birding centers in Weslaco and Mission, and the World Birding Center network. Nearby McAllen and Pharr add shopping, restaurants, and easy day trips across the border to Nuevo Progreso.

The Rio Grande Valley is a winter destination. From roughly late October through March, daytime highs typically sit in the 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit with cool nights, and freezing temperatures are rare. This is the Winter Texan season, when retirees from the northern United States and Canada fill Valley RV parks for weeks or months at a time. Sites in established resorts book heavily for December through March, with many arrivals starting in late October and early November.
Spring and fall are strong migration windows for birders, with warblers, orioles, and large raptor movements passing through Santa Ana. Weather is warm but manageable, and RV park availability opens up considerably outside peak Winter Texan months.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs commonly near or above the mid-90s Fahrenheit and the wettest stretch of the year around September. Hurricane season along the Gulf runs June through November and can affect travel plans in the Valley.
How to book campgrounds near South Alamo
Most campgrounds around South Alamo are privately owned RV parks and 55-plus resorts rather than public campgrounds, so reservations are made directly with each park by phone, website, or email. Winter Texan season sites, especially monthly and seasonal spots at larger resorts, are frequently reserved months in advance, and repeat guests often rebook the same site year after year.
For shorter trips, calling ahead is the most reliable approach, particularly from December through March. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge itself does not offer camping, but its site passes and seasonal fall and winter tram tours are booked through Recreation.gov, and advance reservations are recommended for tours.
What to expect
Expect a flat, warm, and highly developed RV-park landscape rather than a wilderness setting. Parks here are built around long-stay guests, so amenities typically include full hookups, laundry, pools, clubhouses, and organized activities such as dances, card games, potlucks, and craft shows during the winter months. Many parks have a 55-plus age restriction, so families traveling with children should confirm policies before booking.
Roads are easy to navigate for larger rigs, and grocery stores, medical services, and fuel are readily available in Alamo, Pharr, and McAllen. Cell coverage is strong, mosquitoes and biting insects can be persistent near the refuge and irrigation canals, and Spanish is widely spoken alongside English throughout the Valley.
