Campgrounds and RV parks near Timpson, TX

Fishing drives most trips to this part of East Texas. Lake Murvaul Park & Marina rents kayaks and pedal boats and sells lures and live bait at a well-stocked marina, with camping, picnicking, swimming, and paddling all available on site. The lake is a recognized largemouth bass fishery producing bass over eight pounds, and channel catfish and crappie are present in high numbers. Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park and Campground centers on a cold, clear, rock-lined spring-fed pond, with horseshoes, volleyball, a recreation hall, and a covered pavilion for group meals. Off the water, Carthage lies about a half hour north and Nacogdoches sits to the southwest, offering historic downtown streets, Stephen F. Austin State University, and access to the Angelina and Sabine National Forests for day hikes.

Spring brings mild temperatures and active fishing on Lake Murvaul, with bass action picking up and holiday weekends filling quickly. Rainfall is spread across the year in this part of East Texas, and thunderstorms can move through fast in spring. Reserve several weeks ahead for Memorial Day and other holiday weekends. Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon highs often in the mid-90s. Shaded pine cover at parks like Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park and Campground helps, and the spring-fed pond and lake become the main draw. This is peak family-camping season, so lakeside sites fill early. Expect classic Piney Woods camping: tall pine cover, sandy loam soil, and warm, humid air for much of the year. RV sites at Lake Murvaul Park & Marina include hookups with picnic areas, plus tent camping and cabin rentals through the water district. Camp Tonkawa Springs RV Park and Campground offers full-hookup RV sites with 50 amp service, drinking water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, a recreation room, and a group pavilion. Cell coverage is decent along the US 59 corridor and thinner off the highway or deep in the pines. Burn bans are common during dry summers in Panola and Shelby counties, so check county status before planning a campfire. Bring bug repellent, a swim option, and cash or a card for on-site marina and store purchases.
