Camping near Zapata, Texas
Zapata sits on the western shore of Falcon International Reservoir, commonly called Falcon Lake, on the Rio Grande roughly 50 miles southeast of Laredo. The town is a small South Texas community best known as a base for anglers chasing largemouth bass, and campground options in the area reflect that: a mix of state-park sites on the lake and privately run RV parks in and around town.
The anchor public campground is Falcon State Park, on the 84,000-acre Falcon International Reservoir that spans the Texas-Mexico border. About an hour north in Laredo, Lake Casa Blanca International State Park offers lakeside camping on a 1,680-acre reservoir, with 66 campsites, all equipped with water and electricity, and a smaller set of full-hookup sites.
In Zapata itself, private options such as Lakefront Lodge, Oso Blanco Motel and RV Park, and Amigo Inn and RV Park cater to RV travelers who want hookups, longer stays, and quick access to boat ramps and tackle shops in town.
Things to do around Zapata
Fishing dominates the calendar. Falcon has long been regarded as one of the best largemouth bass lakes in South Texas, and anglers also target channel catfish, white bass, and crappie. Boat ramps at Falcon State Park and in Zapata put boats on the water quickly, and shore fishing is allowed in the state park without a license.
Beyond fishing, visitors can swim, bird watch, water ski, boat, geocache, hike, or explore 2.8 miles of trails at Falcon State Park. The park is a strong location for bird watchers, with both common Southwest species and tropical varieties appearing along the lakeshore and in the brush.
At Lake Casa Blanca in Laredo, families get hiking and mountain biking trails, a swim area, playgrounds, and sports courts for baseball, tennis, volleyball, and basketball, plus fishing from a pier or boat ramp.

South Texas runs on a winter-peak calendar. The mild, dry winter climate and one of the earliest largemouth bass spawns in Texas make Falcon a popular cool-season destination, and Winter Texans fill many local RV parks from November through March. Bass anglers tend to have their strongest results during spring, fall, and winter.
Summer is the off-season for a reason. Temperatures at Falcon State Park can exceed 100 degrees from May to September, and midday fishing can be tough because of the heat. Early morning and late evening are the usable windows. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in September, and remnants of Gulf systems occasionally track inland with heavy rain.
Fall brings the wettest months of the year and gradually cooling temperatures. Lake levels at Falcon fluctuate with drought conditions; the park has posted notices in recent years about low lake levels affecting the boat ramp, so anglers should check current conditions before towing a rig.
How to book
Both nearby state parks use the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system. At Falcon State Park and at Lake Casa Blanca, campsite reservations can be made up to 5 months in advance. Bookings go through the Texas State Parks reservation portal or by phone with TPWD customer service. Falcon State Park often reaches capacity and highly recommends reservations for both camping and day use; day passes may be reserved up to one month before arrival.
Water-only sites at Falcon are non-reservable and work first-come, first-served. A no-show policy applies: if guests do not check in by noon of the day after the scheduled arrival date, the rest of the reservation is cancelled.
Private campgrounds in Zapata, including Lakefront Lodge, Oso Blanco Motel and RV Park, and Amigo Inn and RV Park, are booked directly with the property by phone or through their own listings. Winter Texan season fills these parks early, so plan several weeks ahead.
What to expect on arrival
Gates at Falcon State Park are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with office hours Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Late arrivals must call the park before 5 p.m. on the arrival date for instructions. At Lake Casa Blanca, park gates are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Sites are generally open and sunny. Camping areas at Falcon feature covered pavilions at each site, with restrooms and shower facilities positioned throughout the loops, but most sites sit in open terrain with limited natural screening between neighbors. A dump station and fish cleaning station serve the campground.
Come prepared for heat, wind, and thorny brush. Pack sun protection, ample water, and insect repellent. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Zapata, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Zapata, TX?
RV rental in Zapata is among the more affordable options in Texas, which is great news if you're chasing Falcon Lake bass without blowing the budget. Expect roughly $90 to $150 per night for a travel trailer, $150 to $225 for a Class C motorhome, and $225 to $350 for a Class A on RVezy. Winter months (November through February) bring peak demand from Winter Texans heading to South Texas, so booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead helps lock in the best rates. Want a cheap RV rental in Zapata? Filter by travel trailers, book mid-week, and message hosts about weekly discounts. Many owners drop nightly rates 10 to 20 percent on stays of 5 nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Zapata%2C%20TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Zapata, Texas?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Zapata for nearly every motorhome or travel trailer on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which is larger than the vast majority of rentals on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identity right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. That's it. You're cleared for your Falcon Lake adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my RV rental in Zapata?
Every RVezy booking in Zapata includes a protection package plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the fishing and not the what-ifs. The protection package covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind even if you're new to driving a larger vehicle on US Highway 83. During booking you'll choose from different protection levels depending on how much coverage feels right for you, and the same options are available across every Zapata listing. Built specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals, it's one of the biggest reasons first-time renters book with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Zapata RV trip?
You're not locked in. RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every booking, with refund amounts based on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. The cancellation policy is set by RVezy, not the individual host, so the process is the same no matter which Zapata listing you choose. If a host ever needs to cancel on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you're not left scrambling. If your plans wobble, just contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Zapata?
Absolutely, and Zapata is genuinely dog-friendly. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Zapata: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings that welcome your pup. Once you arrive, Falcon State Park allows leashed pets (6-foot leash max) on all trails and at campsites. The Falcon International Reservoir shoreline offers great morning walks before the South Texas heat sets in. Pro tip: pack a cooling mat and extra water bowls; summer pavement gets scorching, so early morning and post-sunset walks are the move.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/falconCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Zapata?
Yes, RV delivery in Zapata is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed or driven a motorhome before. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up your rental directly at Falcon State Park or nearby private RV parks, level it, hook up water, electric, and sewer, then walk you through every system before they leave. Just filter by Delivery on the listing page and message the host with your destination to confirm distance fees. For first-time renters heading to Falcon Lake, delivery is the closest thing to a turn-key RV camping Zapata experience you can get.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Zapata%2C%20TexasHow far can I drive on my Zapata RV trip?
You've got plenty of road to play with. Most Zapata hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a longer RV road trip from Zapata. Popular drives within easy range include Laredo (about 50 miles north on US-83), McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley (about 110 miles southeast), South Padre Island (about 175 miles east), and San Antonio (roughly 200 miles north). Extra miles typically run $0.25 to $0.45 each, so just message the host with your route and they can quote you a flat mileage add-on upfront.
txdot.gov/data-maps/maps.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Zapata for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice along Falcon Lake. Top picks for RV camping near Zapata include Falcon State Park, with pull-through sites, full hookups, and pavilion-covered pads, plus several private parks in town offering 30/50-amp service, lakeside sites, and easy access to Falcon International Reservoir. All sit minutes from world-class bass fishing on the Falcon International Reservoir. Book Falcon State Park up to 5 months out through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, especially November through March when Winter Texans roll in.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/falcon/fees-facilities/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Zapata?
Zapata is one of the rare Texas destinations where winter is actually peak season, not summer. From November through March, daytime highs typically sit in the comfortable 68 to 78 degree range and nights drop to the low 50s, which is exactly why Winter Texans flock here for the bass fishing and birding. Summers (June through August) regularly push past 100 degrees, so unless you love heat, plan your Zapata RV trip for the cool season. The shoulder months of October and April are the sweet spot: warm days, light crowds, and you'll still snag a lakeside campsite without booking months ahead.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=26.9072605&lon=-99.27142549999996I'm renting an RV for the first time. How does it work in Zapata?
First-time renting an RV is less intimidating than it looks, especially in Zapata where the roads are wide, traffic is light, and hosts are used to walking newbies through everything. At pickup, your RVezy host gives a full orientation: how to operate the generator, fresh and waste water tanks, slide-outs, propane, AC, and leveling. You can message them anytime during your trip with questions. Choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer for an easier first drive, or book delivery so the RV is set up and ready when you arrive at Falcon State Park. Most first-timers say the only regret is not booking sooner.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something breaks down on my Zapata RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy rental in Zapata includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you get a flat on US-83, a dead battery at Falcon State Park, or a propane issue at your campsite, help is one phone call away. Roadside dispatches a local pro to your exact location, day or night. Your host is also a direct line of support: they know their RV inside and out and can usually troubleshoot smaller issues by text or phone in minutes. And RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip, so you're never figuring things out alone in the middle of South Texas brush country.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Zapata RV rental across the border into Mexico?
For your Zapata RV rental, plan to stay on the US side of the Rio Grande. Travel into Mexico is not permitted with RVezy rentals because the protection package and insurance don't extend across the border. The good news: you don't need to leave the country to see incredible scenery. From Zapata you can take a motorhome rental Zapata route north to Laredo (50 miles), east to South Padre Island (175 miles), or northwest into the Texas Hill Country and San Antonio (200 miles). Travel to other US states is generally fine; just confirm your route with your host before booking so they can adjust mileage and any travel notes on the agreement.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on my Zapata RV trip?
Fuel in South Texas is typically friendlier on the wallet than in big metros, and Zapata sits along US-83 where gas stations are plentiful between Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, 16 to 22 mpg for a campervan rental Zapata setup (Class B), and 12 to 18 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer. A 200-mile weekend round trip to Laredo and back usually runs $60 to $110 in fuel. Top off in town before heading out on rural routes, since stations get sparser the further you get from Zapata.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Zapata?
Book early for winter, breathe easy in summer. Falcon State Park accepts reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and sites with electric hookups fill up fast from November through March when Winter Texans arrive. For peak weekends like Thanksgiving and Christmas, reserve the moment your dates open. Private parks near Zapata typically book 2 to 4 weeks out, even in busy season. Pro tip: some water-only sites at Falcon State Park are first-come, first-served, which is a great backup if your dream weekend is already booked.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/falcon/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat are the driving conditions like around Zapata?
Driving around Zapata is one of the easier RV experiences in Texas. US Highway 83 runs straight through town with wide shoulders, light traffic, and gentle terrain, so even first-timers settle in quickly. The biggest thing to watch for is wind: South Texas brush country gets steady gusts that can reach 25 to 30 mph, which can push a tall RV around, so reduce speed on open stretches between Zapata and Laredo. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly from May through September, and burn bans are common during dry spells. Check the National Weather Service Brownsville forecast the morning of your drive and you'll be set.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=26.9072605&lon=-99.27142549999996What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Zapata?
You'll find solid hookups across the board. Falcon State Park offers pull-through sites with water and electric (some with full sewer hookups), restrooms with showers, a dump station, picnic pavilions, and a trail system. Private parks near Zapata typically provide 30/50-amp service, Wi-Fi, and amenities like pools or clubhouses. For freshwater fill-ups and dump stations between trips, Falcon State Park's dump station is available to overnight guests, and most private parks let you use theirs for a small fee. Tip: fill your fresh tank before leaving Zapata since boondocking water sources are limited along the lake's remote shoreline.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/falcon/fees-facilities/campsitesWhat features and amenities come standard in a Zapata RV rental?
Comfort is the baseline. Most RVezy rentals in Zapata come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, bunk options in family-friendly Class C motorhomes, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning (a must for South Texas), heating, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many include a generator for off-grid power at Falcon State Park's water-only sites, plus a TV, and some hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Wi-Fi signal at Falcon Lake can be patchy, so if you need to work remotely, ask your host about a cellular booster. Bedding and kitchen kits are often included or available as a small add-on.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Zapata%2C%20TexasWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Zapata RV rental?
Hosts in Zapata make your trip easy. Popular add-ons include delivery and setup ($1 to $4 per mile typical), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour beyond included hours), bedding and linen kits ($25 to $75 flat), camp chairs and outdoor mats, kayaks and fishing gear (huge in Falcon Lake country), portable Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet fees ($50 to $150 per trip). Pickup and dropoff times are usually flexible (most hosts offer 1 to 3 pm pickup, 11 am dropoff), and mileage options range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited mileage on local trips. Message the host before booking to bundle add-ons; many will discount the package if you bring it up upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Zapata%2C%20TexasHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online: you pay through RVezy's secure platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment and released after your trip if there's no damage, no missing items, and the RV is returned with the agreed fuel and tank levels. To keep things smooth, do a quick walkthrough video with the host at pickup and again at return, follow the dump station and refuel instructions, and keep your receipts. Your Zapata RV trip stays smooth from booking to drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Zapata if I'm not at a campground?
Knowing where to park an RV in Zapata is half the battle. Overnight parking on Zapata County streets isn't recommended, and you should always avoid restricted Border Patrol zones near the Rio Grande. Some retailers along US-83 may permit overnight RV parking with manager approval, but policies change, so call ahead before relying on it. The safest bet for a stress-free night is Falcon State Park or one of the private RV parks in town, all within a short drive of Zapata's center and offering proper hookups for a few dollars more than parking lot boondocking.
