Campgrounds near Altavista, Virginia
Altavista sits in Campbell County along the Roanoke River in central Virginia, roughly halfway between Lynchburg and Smith Mountain Lake. The area gives RV travelers access to two reservoirs, Leesville Lake and Smith Mountain Lake, plus the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge. Most trips base out of a private RV park with full hookups or a lakefront resort with boat access.
Leesville Lake Campground, LLC sits directly on the smaller of the two reservoirs and appeals to anglers and boaters who want quieter water. Lynchburg RV Resort is the closest full-service RV park to town, useful for travelers who need pull-throughs, laundry, and easy interstate access. Sweetwater RV Park offers a smaller, quieter setup in the surrounding area.
For Smith Mountain Lake trips, Halesford Harbour Resort and Smith Mountain Campground put RVers within short driving distance of marinas, swim beaches, and the state park. Both fill quickly on summer weekends.
Things to do around Altavista
Water recreation drives most itineraries. Smith Mountain Lake covers roughly 20,600 acres and offers hundreds of miles of shoreline for fishing, kayaking, sailing, tubing, and pontoon days. Leesville Lake, downstream of the Smith Mountain Dam, is smaller and better suited to paddling and bass fishing without heavy wake traffic.
Smith Mountain Lake State Park sits on the second largest freshwater lake in the state and offers swimming at a guarded beach, boating, fishing, picnicking, a visitor center, and miles of hiking trails. From Altavista, families can also drive to downtown Lynchburg for museums and restaurants, or head west to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Peaks of Otter for hiking and scenic drives.

The camping season centers on late spring through early fall. Smith Mountain Lake State Park runs its full slate of facilities, including the guarded beach and boat launch, during its March-to-December operating window. July and August bring the busiest lake traffic, warmest water, and the tightest campsite availability at both lakes.
Spring and fall are the value windows. Days are mild, insect pressure is lighter, and hardwood color peaks around mid to late October in the Blue Ridge foothills. Some private resorts on Smith Mountain Lake reduce services in shoulder season, so it is worth confirming pool, store, and marina hours before booking.
The state park campground operates from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, so late-winter and mid-winter trips need to rely on private RV parks that stay open year-round. Winter offers quieter conditions, though some amenities may be limited.
