Campgrounds near Atkins, Virginia
Atkins sits in Smyth County along Interstate 81 in southwestern Virginia, placing RV renters within a short drive of two of the state's most popular mountain parks. Hungry Mother State Park lies just north near Marion and centers on a 108-acre lake surrounded by woodlands. Grayson Highlands sits to the south along U.S. 58, near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia's two highest peaks.
Campground options range from state-park sites with hookups to horse camps and private campgrounds. Creekside - Hungry Mother State Park offers water and electric sites along a shaded creek, and Deer Trail Park and Campground inc. provides a private-park alternative in the same corridor. Farther south, Grayson Highlands State Park, Iron Mountain Horse Camp, and Dusty Trail Outfitters serve riders and hikers headed into the Mount Rogers area.
Elevations near Grayson Highlands top 5,000 feet, and that elevation shapes both the scenery and the camping season, making seasonal planning a bigger factor here than in most of Virginia.
Things to do near Atkins
Hungry Mother State Park has a sandy beach with a bathhouse, boat rentals including canoes, kayaks, paddleboats and paddleboards, a boat launch, and a universally accessible fishing pier. More than 17 miles of hiking and biking trails traverse the surrounding mountains, and families based at Creekside - Hungry Mother State Park can walk to the lake and beach area.
At Grayson Highlands, the draw is the high country. The park provides year-round access to the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, and hikers on the highlands trails are likely to encounter free-roaming wild ponies. The Rhododendron Trail is a popular route, leading up from Massie Gap into open highland meadows on the way to Mount Rogers. Iron Mountain Horse Camp and Dusty Trail Outfitters cater to riders using the extensive horse-trail network.

Camping seasons vary sharply by elevation. Camping is available year-round at Camp Burson in Hungry Mother State Park, and Creekside operates through the warm months with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, all cabins and the lodge at Hungry Mother are rented by the week rather than by the night.
At higher elevation, Grayson Highlands runs a much shorter full-service window. Due to adverse weather conditions, full-service camping is only available from May through October, while primitive camping is allowed in Chestnut Hollow campground during March, April and November, with porta-johns only and no water at that location. RV renters planning shoulder-season trips should confirm hookups before booking.
Fall foliage in mid-October and spring rhododendron blooms drive the busiest non-summer weekends. Weekdays generally offer more solitude than weekends. Winter access to the highlands is limited, and snow and ice are common above 4,000 feet.
How to book campgrounds near Atkins
Virginia State Park sites, including Creekside - Hungry Mother State Park and Grayson Highlands State Park, are booked through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. Reservations are available up to 11 months in advance, check-in is 4 p.m., and checkout is 1 p.m. Guests can book online or call the Virginia State Parks reservation line at 1-800-933-PARK.
Summer weekends fill early, so booking as soon as the window opens is recommended for July weekends and October foliage dates. Private options such as Deer Trail Park and Campground inc. and Dusty Trail Outfitters are reserved directly with the operator. Iron Mountain Horse Camp, on Mount Rogers National Recreation Area land within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, is booked through the federal recreation reservation system.
What to expect
Site sizes and hookups vary significantly between campgrounds. Creekside has 19 sites with electric and water hookups accepting 20 and 30 amp current, accommodating tents, popup campers and RVs up to 30 feet, with back-in sites and limited pull-through sites; 50-amp service at Hungry Mother is available at Camp Burson only. Larger rigs headed to Hungry Mother should plan on Camp Burson rather than Creekside.
Grayson Highlands' Hickory Ridge Campground has 38 sites with 20, 30 and 50-amp electric and water hookups accommodating RVs up to 40 feet, plus 28 primitive tent sites, four yurts, a bunkhouse, and a group area, with a picnic table and fire ring or grill at each site.
Terrain in the highlands is rugged and cool. Cell service is spotty at higher elevations, and wildlife including free-roaming ponies, deer and black bears is common, so food storage rules should be followed.
