Campgrounds and RV parks near Bassett, VA

Water recreation drives most trips. Recreational opportunities include unguarded swimming at the designated beach, boat rentals available Memorial Day through Labor Day, fishing for bluegill, crappie, catfish, largemouth bass, and stocked trout, and 10 miles of multi-use trails through the Little Mountain Trail System. The Smith River below Philpott Dam is a tailwater fishery, and the Philpott Blueway is a system of water trails easily accessible from surrounding parks, boat launches and campgrounds. On land, hiking and horseback riding are the main draws. Horses are allowed on the park's multi-use trails, and the park has an area designated for horse trailers. State law requires that visitors carry a copy of a negative Coggins report with each horse brought to the park. Families often plan a half day around hunting for staurolite crosses at the park's designated site, then drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway for overlooks, picnic areas, and short trails at nearby mile markers.

The core camping window runs from early spring through late fall. Fairy Stone State Park's main campground is typically open from the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December. At Goose Point on Philpott Lake, the campground and bathhouses are closed during non-peak season from November through March; the boat ramp stays open with a vault toilet, and no drinking water is available. Private parks in the area often stay open year-round but scale back services in winter. Summer weekends and holidays are the tightest period. Virginia opens reservations 11 months in advance on a rolling basis, and for popular summer weekends the best strategy is to book as soon as the window opens. Waterfront loops at Goose Point fill earliest. Spring and fall bring easier availability and cooler nights, though afternoon thunderstorms are typical through the warm months. Cabins and the lodge at Fairy Stone are open year-round for reservations, along with the equestrian campground, providing shoulder-season and winter options when the main campground is not operating.

Sites near Bassett range from full-hookup private parks to electric-and-water state park loops and Corps of Engineers sites with a mix of amenities. The Electric/Water Campground at Fairy Stone provides graveled pull-through sites accommodating units up to 50 feet with 20, 30, and 50-amp electric service alongside water connections; sites are open and unshaded, designed for self-contained units rather than tents, common fire areas with picnic seating serve both ends of the loop, pit toilets are provided, and a dump station is available on-site. The equestrian campground has 10 electric and water sites and can accommodate RVs up to 50 feet long. At Goose Point, 53 of the 63 campsites have electric and water hookups, with flush toilets, showers, drinking water, and a dump station in the campground. Expect wooded, rolling terrain and moderate site spacing. Bring insect repellent for summer, and plan for cool overnight temperatures in shoulder seasons.
