Campgrounds near Boykins, Virginia
Boykins sits in Southampton County in southeastern Virginia, near the North Carolina line and about a half-hour drive west of the I-95 corridor at Emporia. RV renters use the town as a quiet base for exploring the Meherrin and Nottoway river country, with most developed campgrounds clustered along I-95 to the west or across the state line to the south.
The closest full-service options are Emporia Campground / I-95 and Emporia/I-95 KOA, both a short interstate hop from Boykins and geared toward pull-through RV traffic. Farther south on I-95, The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina offers big-rig sites and resort amenities. South Forty Camp Resort near Petersburg is a straight shot north on I-95 for travelers coming from or heading toward Richmond.
For a state-park experience, Merchants Millpond State Park sits roughly an hour south in Gates County, North Carolina, centered on a cypress-tupelo millpond. Its family campground is currently closed for construction, so RV renters should confirm status before planning a stay there.
Things to do near Boykins
The area's draw is water and history. Paddling is the main attraction at Merchants Millpond State Park, where a roughly 760-acre millpond and Lassiter Swamp hold old-growth cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, along with resident alligators. Miles of hiking trails wind through the surrounding wetland environment.
On the Virginia side, families use Emporia/I-95 KOA and The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads as bases for day trips to Petersburg's Civil War sites, Lake Gaston about 40 miles from Emporia, and Historic Petersburg to the north. The KOA runs a seasonal pool, jump pad, and playground aimed at kids.
Closer to Boykins, low-traffic country roads make for easy bike rides, and the Nottoway and Meherrin rivers support flatwater fishing and casual paddling.

Southeastern Virginia has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, with July average highs near 89 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. This is peak family-travel season, and I-95 campgrounds near Emporia fill quickly on holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. April, May, and October typically deliver mild days, lower humidity, and manageable overnight lows, and shoulder-season availability is easier to find at private parks along the interstate.
Winters are cool rather than harsh, with January average lows near freezing and only occasional snowfall. Emporia/I-95 KOA and The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads stay open year-round, though water to KOA tent sites is turned off from November through March. Seasonal amenities such as the pool generally run from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Atlantic hurricane season overlaps late summer and early fall and can bring heavy rain to the region.
How to book campgrounds near Boykins
Private I-95 parks near Boykins take direct online reservations. Emporia/I-95 KOA books through the KOA site and requires phone cancellation at least seven days before arrival for RV and tent sites; text and email cancellations are not accepted. The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads and South Forty Camp Resort book directly through their own sites.
Merchants Millpond State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to six months in advance, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day carry a two-night minimum. Confirm current campground status before booking, as the family campground is closed for construction.
For summer weekends and holidays, reserving eight to twelve weeks out is prudent at any of the interstate parks.
What to expect at campgrounds near Boykins
The Emporia-area private parks are geared toward transient interstate traffic. Expect level pull-through sites, 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, and easy big-rig access; Emporia/I-95 KOA advertises pull-throughs that accommodate rigs up to 60 feet, and The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads was built with big rigs in mind. Both parks have on-site laundry, bathhouses, dog runs, and seasonal pools. A rail line runs behind the KOA property, and some guests notice train noise at night.
At Merchants Millpond, expect a swamp environment: shaded, well-spaced sites, cypress and Spanish moss, and mosquitoes in warm months. Leashed pets are allowed at campsites and on trails. Cellular coverage is patchy in the more rural sections around Boykins and Gates County, so download maps and reservations in advance.
