Camping near Brookneal, Virginia
Brookneal sits in Campbell County in south-central Virginia, along the Staunton River between Lynchburg and the North Carolina line. RV travelers use it as a base for the Staunton River corridor, Smith Mountain and Leesville lakes, and the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest to the north. The terrain is rolling Piedmont: hardwood forest, farmland, and river bluffs, with elevations low enough for year-round road access.
Campground options within roughly an hour of town cover the full range. Lynchburg RV Resort and Leesville Lake Campground, LLC offer private sites geared to travel trailers and motorhomes. Paradise Lake Family Campground provides a family-oriented private option, while Equestrian - Staunton River State Park and Holliday Lake State Park deliver public-land camping inside working state parks.
Staunton River State Park is one of Virginia's original six state parks, sitting on the shoreline of the John H. Kerr Reservoir, also called Buggs Island Lake, at the meeting of the Dan and Staunton rivers. Holliday Lake State Park, deep in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, offers a swimming beach, fishing, boating, hiking, and camping, plus access to multi-use trails within the surrounding state forest.
Things to do around Brookneal
Water recreation drives most trips. Buggs Island Lake is Virginia's largest lake and offers freshwater fishing, boating, water skiing, and other aquatic activities, and the surrounding park adds picnic shelters, three playgrounds, tennis and volleyball courts, several boat launches, and more than 17 miles of multi-use trails. Leesville Lake stretches for miles with a boat ramp, floating dock, and marina services near the private campground on its shoreline.
Stargazing is a headline activity. Staunton River State Park was the first state park in Virginia to be designated an International Dark Sky Park, and park staff conduct interpretive programs and rent telescopes.
At Holliday Lake, families use the lifeguarded swimming beach, rent canoes, kayaks, jon boats, paddleboards, and pedal boats, and hike the 6.5-mile Lakeshore Trail loop around the lake. The park is also just minutes from Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, where Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in 1865, ending the American Civil War in Virginia.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Brookneal area. Temperatures are mild, humidity is lower than in mid-summer, and hardwood color peaks in mid- to late October. A burn ban is in effect from February 15 through April 30 at Holliday Lake, from midnight to 4 p.m., so campfires should be planned for evening only during that window. Staunton River applies a similar restriction from March 1 through April 30, permitting open fires only between 4 p.m. and midnight.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and the busiest camping season. Reservations at the state parks fill quickly on holiday weekends, and lake beaches, snack bars, and swim areas run on Memorial Day through Labor Day schedules. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August.
Winter is quiet, with most services reduced. The main Virginia State Parks camping season at both Staunton River and Holliday Lake runs from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, with cabins available year-round at Staunton River. Firewood should be purchased locally on arrival, since Virginia state parks discourage moving firewood between regions to limit the spread of pests such as the Emerald Ash Borer.
How to book campgrounds near Brookneal
Virginia state park sites are reserved through the state's central reservation system. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-933-PARK or online through the Virginia State Parks reservation portal, and can be booked up to 11 months in advance, which matters for summer weekends at Staunton River and Holliday Lake. Same-day reservations are also accepted, generally until early afternoon.
Reservations are recommended from May through September, and holiday weekends typically sell out months ahead. If a target date is full, check back regularly for cancellations, which turn over frequently.
Private campgrounds, including Lynchburg RV Resort, Paradise Lake Family Campground, and Leesville Lake Campground, LLC, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type (20/30/50 amp), and pet policies at the time of booking, especially for larger fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes.
What to expect on-site
State park campgrounds in this region are wooded, generally shaded, and family-oriented. Staunton River State Park campground sits above Buggs Island Lake at the convergence of the Dan and Staunton rivers, with sites offering water and electric hookups, 20- and 30-amp service, a dump station, and a bathhouse with hot showers and laundry. There are no sewer hookups at the sites, and larger pull-through spaces for 45-foot trailers are limited, so big rigs should book early.
Holliday Lake State Park has 37 campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs across the Redbud and Laurel Ridge loops, and all campsites except the group site have water and electric hookups. A dump station, drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, and laundry are on-site.
Cell coverage is spotty in the state forest; there is no cell service at Holliday Lake, but free Wi-Fi is available at the Contact Station near Redbud Campground and at the Park Office near the lake. Roads inside the parks can be narrow, and some sites need leveling blocks, so drivers of larger rigs should scout the loop before committing to a back-in.
