Camptown, Virginia overview
Camptown is a small census-designated place in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, lying just east of Franklin. The area sits in the flat coastal plain of southeastern Virginia, close to the North Carolina line and within reach of the James River, the Great Dismal Swamp, and Hampton Roads. For RV travelers, it works as a quiet base between the Tidewater cities and the rural farmland of Southampton and Isle of Wight counties.
Campground options within an easy drive range from small family-run parks to state-park campgrounds. Isle of Wight Campground and Davis Lakes and Campgrounds sit closest to town, while Chesapeake Campground lies east toward the Great Dismal Swamp corridor. Two state parks broaden the choice: Chippokes Plantation is one of the oldest continuously farmed properties in North America, and Merchants Millpond State Park, located in Gates County 10 miles south of North Carolina's northeastern border with Virginia, centers on a 760-acre millpond more than 190 years old.
Expect humid subtropical weather, hardwood and pine forest, tidal rivers, and short drives to historic Smithfield, Jamestown, and Virginia Beach.
Things to do near Camptown
Water is the region's main draw. At Merchants Millpond, hiking the surrounding trails or paddling the placid, shallow waters of the pond offer a great way to explore this wetland environment, where old-growth cypress trees adorned with Spanish moss create an enchanted forest, particularly at Lassiter Swamp. Paddlers should note that alligators live in its cypress swamps, so keep pets and children close to shore.
At Chippokes Plantation State Park, families can tour the historic farm and museum, walk the trail network, and fish the James River. The park offers over 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding through historic farmland and along the riverfront, and the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry provides free access to Colonial Virginia's historic triangle.
Closer to Camptown, Isle of Wight Campground and Davis Lakes and Campgrounds add lake fishing, swimming, and easy day trips to Smithfield's historic district.

The camping season in southeastern Virginia is long but not year-round at every park. The Chippokes campground, which has two loops, is open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, so winter RV stays there are not an option. Private parks in the area tend to stay open all year and accept reservations directly.
Across the state line, plans should account for construction impacts. The tent and trailer campground at Merchants Millpond State Park is closed due to construction, and the family campground will be closed until further notice. Paddle-in sites on Bennetts Creek remain, reached by a 4.5 mile paddle, but confirm status before towing.
Summer is peak season, humid and warm with afternoon thunderstorms; late summer and early fall carry tropical-system risk from the Atlantic. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable RV weather, while winter is mild but wet, with occasional freezes and sporadic snow.
How to book campgrounds near Camptown
Virginia state parks use a central reservation system. Reservations are available online or by calling 800-933-PARK, and the Virginia State Parks system allows booking up to 11 months ahead of arrival at Chippokes. Sites vary in length and levelness, so read site notes carefully: Loop A contains sites 19-50 with water and 20/30-amp electric service in a shaded setting favored by tent campers, while Loop B offers sites 1-18 on paved, level pads with 20/30/50-amp service, accommodating rigs up to 50 feet with several pull-through options.
Merchants Millpond, when open, uses the North Carolina State Parks system through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance.
Private parks like Isle of Wight Campground, Davis Lakes and Campgrounds, and Chesapeake Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone; holiday weekends fill first.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in the area range from full-hookup gravel pads to shaded state-park loops. At Chippokes, the campground consists of two loops totaling 51 sites, all equipped with water and electric hookups, with Loop A sites 19-50 suitable for tents, pop-ups, and RVs up to 30 feet. Check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is 1 p.m. The park features a dump station, laundry facilities at the Loop B bathhouse, and a camp store.
Private campgrounds in the area skew family-oriented, with typical amenities including bathhouses with showers, laundry, playgrounds, and small stores. Cell coverage is generally reliable, but stock groceries before arrival; rural stretches around Surry and Gates County have limited services.
