Camping near Cave Spring, Virginia
Cave Spring sits in Roanoke County in the Roanoke Valley of southwest Virginia, roughly ten minutes south of downtown Roanoke and within a short drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The area works well as a base for RV travelers who want mountain scenery, river access, and city amenities in the same trip.
Campground options nearby cover a range of styles. Dixie Caverns Campground and Blue Ridge Campgroud and Marina offer developed sites suited to RVs, while Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Only Park caters specifically to Airstream owners. Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, near New Castle, spreads across 500 acres of fields, forests, mountains, and streams, with Craig Creek running nearly half a mile through the property, and offers pull-in RV sites, tent spots, and cabins. Goose Dam Campground rounds out the mix for travelers looking for something quieter.
Beyond private parks, Virginia State Parks and national forest campgrounds within an hour of Cave Spring add hundreds of additional sites, giving RV renters flexibility on weekends when local parks fill.
Things to do around Cave Spring
The Roanoke area centers much of its outdoor activity on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which climbs east and north of Cave Spring. Peaks of Otter sits about 26 miles north of Roanoke along the Parkway and offers hiking, a lake, and a developed campground with RV-capable sites. Sections of the Appalachian Trail cross the ridges above Roanoke, including the well-known McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs viewpoints.
Closer to town, Mill Mountain Park, the Roanoke Star overlook, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation give families in-town options for a rainy afternoon. Smith Mountain Lake, about an hour southeast, adds swimming, boating, and fishing. At Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, guests can tube or paddle Craig Creek and use the on-site trails, ponds, giant swing, ropes courses, rock climbing, and mountain bike routes.

The Roanoke Valley has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Most private campgrounds around Cave Spring stay open year-round or nearly so, but higher-elevation Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds like Peaks of Otter typically operate May through October, and some Forest Service sites in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests close in winter.
Spring brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and the heaviest rainfall of the year, with March reaching an average of about 105 mm of precipitation, the peak for the year. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; it is also the busiest booking window for state parks and popular private campgrounds. Fall delivers the region's clearest weather and peak leaf color from mid-October into early November, and reservations tighten again on foliage weekends.
Winters are cold with occasional snow. Roanoke County averages 11.4 inches of snowfall per year according to NOAA climate normals, so RV travelers arriving December through February should check road conditions on the Parkway, which closes sections during ice and snow events.

Booking and reservations
Private campgrounds near Cave Spring, including Dixie Caverns Campground, Blue Ridge Campgroud and Marina, Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Only Park, Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, and Goose Dam Campground, each handle their own reservations through their websites or third-party booking platforms. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends often sell out weeks in advance, so book early for Friday and Saturday arrivals.
Virginia State Parks, including Smith Mountain Lake and Douthat, accept reservations 11 months in advance and up to 2 p.m. on the day of arrival through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation reservation portal or by phone at 800-933-PARK. The maximum camping period is 14 nights in a 30-day period.
For national forest sites and Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds like Peaks of Otter, select campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777, and additional first-come, first-served sites are booked in person at the campground kiosk.
What to expect on arrival
Most developed campgrounds in the Cave Spring area sit on rolling terrain in wooded settings, so RV renters should expect some sites that require careful leveling. Full hookups are common at private parks; Peaks of Otter and similar Parkway sites do not offer water, sewer, or electric hookups, with shared dump stations.
Cell service is spotty once travelers leave the Roanoke urban core. Cell coverage at Peaks of Otter is minimal, with both Verizon and AT&T struggling in the area, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Bears are active in the surrounding national forest, so use the food-storage practices required by the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
Quiet hours apply at Virginia State Park campgrounds, and pets must be leashed at all listed public campgrounds.

Popular delivery destinations from Cave Spring include Dixie Caverns Campground in Salem, Explore Park, and Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston. Delivery fees are usually tied to mileage from the host's location, so look for listings within Roanoke County to keep costs down. It is the easiest way to skip the towing learning curve completely.

April through early June brings highs in the 65 to 80 degree range, blooming dogwoods, and uncrowded campgrounds. Mid-September through early November delivers Blue Ridge fall foliage that draws visitors from all over the East Coast, with crisp 60 to 70 degree days. July and August are warm and humid (highs around 85 to 87 with afternoon thunderstorms), so head up to higher Parkway elevations like Rocky Knob to cool off. forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Cave+Spring&state=VA&site=RNKI've never rented an RV before, how does this actually work?
First time renting an RV? You're going to love how hands-on the RVezy process is. Every booking includes a full walkthrough at pickup where your Cave Spring host shows you every system, slide-out, propane valve, holding tank, water heater, and dump procedure, so you leave knowing exactly what to do. You can message the host through the listing before booking with any questions, and many provide written guides or video tutorials as well. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup so the RV is ready and running when you arrive. RVezy customer support is available 7 days a week before, during, and after your trip if you ever need a hand.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/What happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Cave Spring includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. If a mechanical issue pops up at Smith Mountain Lake or on a remote stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway, one call gets help dispatched, you do not have to figure out which tow company can handle an RV. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app and knows their rig inside out, which often solves small issues in minutes. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before pulling away, cell coverage gets thin in parts of the Jefferson National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cave Spring RV rental across state lines?
Yes, and that's one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Cave Spring. Your rental is fully covered for travel throughout the continental United States, so popular cross-state routes like up to West Virginia's New River Gorge (about 2.5 hours), down to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina (about 5 hours), or up the Blue Ridge Parkway through Shenandoah National Park are all on the table. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. If you're planning a longer multi-state loop, message the host first to confirm mileage allowances, many offer unlimited or extended-mile packages for serious road trippers.
virginiadot.org/travel/What about fuel costs and MPG for an RV trip from Cave Spring?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's very manageable in Virginia. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, 12 to 18 MPG for a campervan (Class B), and 10 to 14 MPG for a truck pulling a travel trailer. Virginia gas prices typically run near the national average, and you'll find affordable stations along US-220 and I-81 near Cave Spring at Sheetz, Wawa, and Kroger Fuel. Budget about $0.30 to $0.50 per mile in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up in Roanoke County before heading up onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, where there are no gas stations between Cherokee, NC and Waynesboro, VA.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground in the Cave Spring area?
For the best campgrounds near Cave Spring, plan ahead. Virginia State Parks like Smith Mountain Lake open reservations exactly 11 months out through reservevaparks.com, and prime summer weekends often sell out the day the window opens. Blue Ridge Parkway National Park Service campgrounds (Roanoke Mountain, Rocky Knob, Otter Creek) book through recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead and fill quickly for October leaf season. Private RV parks like Dixie Caverns can often accommodate a 2 to 4 week lead time, even in summer. Pro tip: weekday arrivals are dramatically easier to book, and Sunday nights are the secret weapon, full hookups, half the crowd, same scenery.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the driving conditions like around Cave Spring?
Cave Spring driving is mostly relaxed, but a few local quirks help. The town sits in the Roanoke Valley between Bent Mountain and Mill Mountain, so expect some grades on US-221 heading southwest and on the climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway itself has a 45 MPH speed limit, tight curves, and a few low tunnels, the lowest clearance on the Virginia section is at Bluff Mountain Tunnel at about 13 feet, which clears most rentals but always check your RV's height before entering. I-81 traffic can get heavy with trucks, especially through Roanoke. Pro tip: avoid Route 220 north toward Daleville during weekday rush hour and use the smoother I-581 corridor instead.
virginiadot.org/travel/citizen.aspWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Cave Spring?
Most campgrounds near Cave Spring offer the essentials and then some. Virginia State Parks like Smith Mountain Lake provide water and electric hookups (no sewer at the sites, but a dump station is on the property), hot showers, flush toilets, and a camp store. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds like Roanoke Mountain are more rustic, no hookups, but they have potable water spigots, dump stations, and clean restrooms. Private parks like Dixie Caverns Campground offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), WiFi, laundry, and even cave tours. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks at the campground before heading deep into the Jefferson National Forest, services thin out fast once you leave Roanoke County.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/smith-mountain-lakeWhat's included inside the RV I rent in Cave Spring?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Cave Spring listing comes fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8 (depending on size), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Most include a TV, and many offer onboard generators for off-grid camping, plus outdoor awnings perfect for those long Blue Ridge evenings. Some listings include kitchen kits, bedding, and outdoor chairs as standard, others offer them as add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities checklist carefully and message the host to confirm anything specific (like a coffee maker or pet bedding) before you book.
virginia.org/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/What add-ons and fees should I expect with my Cave Spring RV rental?
Hosts in Cave Spring offer a variety of useful add-ons that you can pick during booking. Popular options include delivery and setup (commonly priced per mile from the host's location), generator hours for boondocking, kitchen and linen kits, bike racks, camp chairs, propane refills, and pet fees if you are bringing a dog. Mileage policies vary by listing, some include 100 to 150 miles per night while others offer unlimited mileage for an upfront price. Pickup and drop-off times are set by the host and clearly noted on the listing. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than adding them after, hosts often discount packages for first-time renters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cave%20Spring%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and fully online, no cash, no awkward driveway handoffs. You pay through the secure RVezy platform when you book, and your card is the only one charged, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup (amount varies by RV value and listing) and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues for your Cave Spring RV trip, do a quick walk-through video at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel level, and dump the tanks if your listing requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great first-time RV trip itinerary from Cave Spring?
Here's a perfect family RV trip Cave Spring weekend that locals swear by. Day 1: pick up your RV (or have it delivered), then drive 35 minutes to Roanoke Mountain Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway for sunset views of the Roanoke Valley. Day 2: continue south on the Parkway to Rocky Knob (milepost 167) and hike to Rock Castle Gorge. Day 3: head east about an hour to Smith Mountain Lake State Park for swimming, kayak rentals, and a lakeside campfire. Day 4: return via Bedford and the National D-Day Memorial. Total drive time is under 4 hours across 4 days, you're never far from civilization, and you'll see why the Roanoke region was named one of the best outdoor towns in the East.
