Campgrounds near Chilhowie, Virginia
Chilhowie sits in Smyth County in southwest Virginia, along the Interstate 81 corridor between Marion and Abingdon. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Hungry Mother State Park, the Virginia Creeper Trail, and the higher country of Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Terrain here is mountainous and wooded, with elevations climbing sharply south of town.
Options close to Chilhowie range from state-park sites to small private RV parks. Creekside at Hungry Mother State Park offers water and electric sites in a wooded setting, while Camp Burson within the same park handles larger rigs and has some full-hookup sites. Creek Side RV Park and Laurel Creek RV Park are private, road-accessible options useful for I-81 travelers. Creeper Trail Campground Inc sits near the western terminus of the Virginia Creeper Trail in Abingdon, and Old Mill Music & RV Park serves campers heading into the Tennessee highlands.
Most sites in the area accommodate mid-size RVs, though larger rigs should verify length limits before booking, especially at state-park loops with tight access roads.
Things to do near Chilhowie
Hungry Mother State Park anchors most trip planning in the area. The 108-acre lake supports swimming from a sandy beach, plus fishing, canoe, kayak, and paddleboat rentals when in season. Anglers work the lake for bass and other species, and more than 17 miles of trails handle hiking and mountain biking through the surrounding woodlands.
The Virginia Creeper Trail runs 34 miles from Abingdon through Damascus to Whitetop Station. The upper section from Damascus to Whitetop was heavily damaged by Hurricane Helene in September 2024 and remains closed for reconstruction, with reopening estimated for fall 2026. The lower half from Abingdon to Damascus (about 17 miles) is open, and Damascus bike shops continue to run rentals and shuttles on that section. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, the Appalachian Trail, and small towns like Marion and Damascus round out the day-trip options.

Camping in the Chilhowie area runs effectively year-round, but the practical season for most visitors is April through October. Camp Burson at Hungry Mother State Park is the one campground inside the park open year-round. Creekside is also open, and the park's yurts operate on limited seasons: the Royal Oak yurt runs April 1 through October 31, while Camp Burson yurts are available from the first Friday in March through the first Sunday in December.
Summer is the peak booking window. Guarded swimming and concessions at Hungry Mother run through Labor Day, and the park's regular interpretive programs cluster from mid-June into early September. Weekends in July and August fill fastest, so reserve early for sites at Creekside and Camp Burson.
Fall brings cool nights, foliage, and lower crowds. Spring is wet but green, with wildflowers along the Creeper Trail. Winter camping is quiet and cold, with occasional snow and reduced services at the state park; only Camp Burson stays fully operational.
How to book
Sites inside Hungry Mother State Park are reserved through the Virginia State Parks system, either online at the state's reservation portal or by phone at 1-800-933-PARK. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis, and the same-day cutoff for campsites is 2 p.m. Virginia State Park cancellation and transfer policies apply to Camp Burson, Creekside, and Royal Oak.
For peak-season weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, book as early as possible after the 11-month window opens. Cancellations do release sites closer to the date, so it is worth checking availability regularly if a preferred weekend is full.
Private campgrounds near Chilhowie, including Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, Creeper Trail Campground Inc, and Old Mill Music & RV Park, are booked directly with each operator by phone or website. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and check-in windows at the time of booking.
What to expect
Sites at Hungry Mother State Park are wooded and set close together, so campers seeking full seclusion should look elsewhere. Creekside has 19 paved sites with water and electric hookups on 20- and 30-amp service, and RVs are capped at 30 feet due to a sharp turn on the access road. Camp Burson has 50 sites, including 30 with full hookups and 20 with electric and water; 50-amp service is available there and it accepts larger rigs. Bathhouses, seasonal laundry, and a dump station are on site.
Cell service around Hungry Mother is unreliable and park Wi-Fi has been inconsistent, so travelers who need connectivity should plan accordingly. Leashed pets are welcome in the campgrounds but not in swim areas or public buildings, and current rabies documentation is required.
