Clarksville camping overview
Clarksville sits on the shore of Buggs Island Lake, also called the John H. Kerr Reservoir, Virginia's largest lake at roughly 50,000 acres. The reservoir straddles the Virginia and North Carolina line, so RV travelers have access to both Virginia State Parks and a North Carolina State Recreation Area within a short drive of town.
Occoneechee State Park sits about one mile east of Clarksville on Route 58 and offers waterfront sites, cabins, yurts, and the dedicated Equestrian - Occoneechee State Park loop with covered horse stalls. Upriver near Scottsburg, the Equestrian - Staunton River State Park campground adds another Virginia-run option with large pull-through sites, CCC-era cabins nearby, and an International Dark Sky Park designation for stargazing.
On the North Carolina side, Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is a collective of eight access areas around the reservoir. Kimball Point - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, Satterwhite Point - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, and Nutbush Creek - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area are the primary RV-friendly campgrounds, with electric sites, bathhouses, and boat access.
Things to do around Clarksville
The lake drives most trip planning. Boat ramps, marinas, and rental docks make it easy to launch a fishing boat or kayak, and Kerr Lake is known for bass, catfish, and crappie. Swimming beaches and shoreline picnic spots are scattered across the state park access points, including Satterwhite Point - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area.
On land, Occoneechee State Park has about 20 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, plus interpretive routes covering the former Occoneechee Plantation. Staunton River State Park adds more than 17 miles of multi-use trails, an outdoor pool, tennis and volleyball courts, disc golf, and telescope programs tied to its Dark Sky status.
In town, downtown Clarksville has small restaurants, a lakefront park, and seasonal community events.

The main camping season runs spring through fall. Equestrian - Occoneechee State Park and the main Occoneechee loops are open year-round, and Equestrian - Staunton River State Park operates on a similar schedule, though facility hours contract in winter.
Summer is peak season. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first, and waterfront sites at Satterwhite Point - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area and Nutbush Creek - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area book well in advance. Daytime highs reach the upper 80s, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring and early fall bring milder temperatures, lighter crowds, and easier last-minute booking.
Winter is quiet, and ongoing construction at Kerr Lake State Recreation Area has closed portions of J.C. Cooper, Nutbush, and Hibernia for extended periods. RV travelers should confirm the specific campground and loop is open before towing in, since Kimball Point - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area and other access areas have varying seasonal schedules.
How to book near Clarksville
Virginia State Parks sites, including Equestrian - Occoneechee State Park and Equestrian - Staunton River State Park, are reserved through the Virginia State Parks system online or by phone at 1-800-933-PARK, up to 11 months in advance. Site-specific booking is available for RV sites, tent sites, yurts, cabins, and equestrian sites with horse stalls. Lakefront and pull-through RV sites tend to go first for summer weekends.
Kerr Lake State Recreation Area campgrounds, including Kimball Point - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, Satterwhite Point - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, and Nutbush Creek - Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, are managed by North Carolina State Parks and reserved through the NC State Parks reservation system. Equestrian campers should note that Virginia law requires a negative Coggins report for each horse.
What to expect on site
Roads and pads at the state park campgrounds are generally paved or well-graded gravel and can handle typical Class C and travel-trailer rigs. Occoneechee's Campground B accommodates RVs up to about 35 feet, Campground C fits units up to 30 feet, and Equestrian - Occoneechee State Park has 11 pull-through sites at 100 by 24 feet that fit trailers up to 65 feet. Equestrian - Staunton River State Park has paved pull-throughs up to 55 feet with electric and water hookups.
At Occoneechee's equestrian loop, sites have 50-amp electric only and share potable water at central fill points, with vault toilets rather than a bathhouse. Full hookups are not offered inside the state parks, so plan for tank management or a mid-trip dump. Cell coverage is spotty in wooded loops.

Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License for personal-use recreational vehicles, so your standard Class D license covers everything from a campervan rental in Clarksville to a large Class A motorhome. To book on RVezy you must generally be 25 or older with a valid license, and identity verification happens right through the platform. Visiting from abroad? help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance included with my Clarksville booking?
Yes, every RV rental in Clarksville, VA booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included. The protection plan provides significant financial coverage for most damages to the RV, so you can launch your boat at Occoneechee State Park without sweating the small stuff. During checkout you choose your protection level based on how much peace of mind you want, with higher tiers offering lower deductibles. This is set by you at booking, not by individual hosts, so you stay in control. First-time renters often pick the top tier for a worry-free Buggs Island Lake getaway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Clarksville RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period built into every reservation so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Whether a sudden storm rolls up the Roanoke River or your work schedule shifts, the policy considers how far ahead of your trip you cancel along with extenuating circumstances. You will see the full details during checkout and in your booking confirmation. If you are booking a peak summer week at Kerr Lake, reserve early to lock in pricing, knowing the cancellation window has your back.

Absolutely, Clarksville is a dog lover's paradise and plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals are available right on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome four-legged guests (some charge a small pet fee, typically $25 to $75). Occoneechee State Park allows leashed pets at its campsites and on its trail system, and Longwood Park on Kerr Reservoir is dog-friendly too. Pro tip: the swim beach at Occoneechee is off-limits to dogs, but quiet lakeshore coves nearby are perfect for a tail-wagging splash.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/occoneecheeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Clarksville?
Yes, RV delivery in Clarksville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if you've never towed before. Many local hosts will drive the RV to Occoneechee State Park, Rudds Creek Recreation Area, Longwood Park, or even a private property along Buggs Island Lake, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Just filter by Delivery when searching, message the host with your campsite number, and show up to a fully set-up motorhome rental in Clarksville ready for s'mores.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/occoneecheeHow far can I drive on a Clarksville RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of road to explore on your Clarksville RV trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, perfect if you're planning a longer loop. Pro tip: if you plan to base-camp at Kerr Lake and just shuttle to town for groceries, even a low-mileage package is more than enough.
virginiadot.org/travel/mileage-chart.aspWhere are the best campgrounds near Clarksville, VA?
Clarksville sits in the middle of one of Virginia's best RV camping regions, with several standout options on Buggs Island Lake (John H. Kerr Reservoir). Occoneechee State Park offers lakefront sites with electric and water hookups and is just east of town. Rudds Creek Recreation Area, run by the US Army Corps of Engineers, has electric and water sites, a swim beach, and a dump station. Longwood Park has wooded sites with full amenities, and Buffalo Park, west of town, offers quiet sites in a more primitive setting. Pro tip: Clarksville is the only Virginia town actually on Buggs Island Lake, so book sites with cove views early.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2991When is the best time of year for RV camping in Clarksville?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Clarksville, with the sweet spot in May, early June, September, and early October when daytime temps hover in the comfortable 70s and 80s. July and August are hot and humid, with highs near 90F, so plan to run the AC and hit the lake early. Spring brings bass tournaments on Buggs Island Lake, and fall lights up the Roanoke River shoreline with color. Winter trips are possible, with December and January highs in the upper 40s, though most Army Corps campgrounds such as Rudds Creek and Buffalo Park close after late October.
weather.gov/akq/I've never rented an RV before. Is Clarksville a good place to start?
Clarksville is one of the friendliest places in Virginia for a first time renting an RV. The roads around Buggs Island Lake are wide, lightly trafficked, and pancake-flat compared to the Blue Ridge, and most local campgrounds (Occoneechee, Rudds Creek, Longwood) have pull-through sites that don't require backing in. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering the generator, water systems, slides, and dump procedure, plus you'll have their phone number for questions during your trip. Choose delivery if you'd rather skip driving entirely. Pro tip: book a Class C or travel trailer under 28 feet for your first family RV trip in Clarksville, easier to handle and easier to park.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/occoneecheeWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 58, a slide-out sticks at Occoneechee, or the fridge stops cooling at Rudds Creek, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically your first contact for quick fixes since they know their RV best, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in nearby South Hill is about 20 minutes away for medical emergencies. Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup so it is ready if you ever need it.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are popular RV road trips from Clarksville, VA?
Clarksville is a launchpad for some fantastic Southeast routes. Popular RV road trips from Clarksville include a 2-hour drive south to Raleigh with an Outer Banks loop extension (another 3.5 hours to Nags Head), a 2.5-hour run west to the Blue Ridge Parkway near Roanoke, a 2-hour cruise north to Richmond and the Civil War battlefields, and a longer swing southwest to Asheville and the Smokies. Cross-state RV travel from Virginia into North Carolina is fully allowed, just confirm any mileage limits with your host. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but a Canada trip may be possible with host approval.
virginiadot.org/travel/What is the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip in Clarksville?
Fuel is easier to budget than you would think. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans average 16 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 14 MPG. Virginia gas prices generally run a bit below the national average. For a 4-night stay where you base-camp at Buggs Island Lake and do day trips, most renters spend roughly $80 to $150 on fuel. Pro tip: fill up in South Hill or Boydton off I-85 where prices are usually lower than at the small stations directly in Clarksville.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clarksville?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) at Buggs Island Lake, book campsites 4 to 6 months ahead. Army Corps sites at Rudds Creek, Longwood, and Buffalo Park are reserved on Recreation.gov, while Occoneechee State Park sites are booked through the Virginia State Parks reservation system up to 11 months in advance. For midweek stays or shoulder season (April, September, October), you can often grab a great lakeside site 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: if Occoneechee is full, check the Corps sites first, Longwood Park often has cancellations and includes a swim beach and dump station.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2991What are driving conditions like around Clarksville?
Driving an RV around Clarksville is refreshingly low-stress. US 58 (the main east-west route) and US 15 are wide, well-maintained, and have generous shoulders, comfortable for typical motorhome rentals in Clarksville. There are no mountain grades, no toll booths in the immediate area, and traffic stays light outside of major holidays. Watch for the Highway 15 bridge over Buggs Island Lake where wind can pick up across open water, and slow down on rural two-laners north of town where deer cross at dusk. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can roll through quickly, so check the radar before towing. Pro tip: avoid driving Route 58 right at sunrise heading east, the glare off the lake is intense.
virginiadot.org/travel/What amenities can I expect at Clarksville-area campgrounds?
Local campgrounds are well equipped for a comfortable RV camping experience in Clarksville. Occoneechee State Park offers electric and water hookups at most sites, a dump station, hot showers, flush toilets, and a marina. Rudds Creek and Longwood (Army Corps) both feature electric and water sites, hot showers, dump stations, swim beaches, and boat ramps. Most sites have gravel pads and picnic tables with fire rings. Full 50-amp hookups can be limited, so confirm amperage when booking if you have a big rig. Pro tip: dump at your campground before checkout, or use the dump at Occoneechee, since there is no full-service dump station in downtown Clarksville.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2991What is inside a typical RV rental in Clarksville?
You will be impressed by how loaded these rigs are. Most RV rentals in Clarksville come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 people (queen bed plus convertible dinette and sofa), heating and air conditioning, a TV with DVD or streaming, and onboard fresh, gray, and black water tanks. Many hosts include outdoor camp chairs, a propane grill, kitchen starter kits, and linens, just ask. Generators are common on motorhomes for off-grid power at Buffalo Park's primitive loop. Cell service from major carriers is generally solid around Buggs Island Lake. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm seatbelt count if you are traveling with kids.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarksville%2C%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Clarksville RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Clarksville offer all kinds of useful add-ons to customize your trip: linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor patio mats, portable grills, generators, kayaks and SUPs, bike racks, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is usually at the host's home or storage lot in or near Clarksville, with a 30 to 45 minute walkthrough covering every system. Most hosts offer flexible mid-afternoon pickup and morning drop-off windows. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage typically $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Pro tip: if you are heading straight to Occoneechee State Park, ask about delivery, the small fee is often less than buying extra mileage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarksville%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy (never directly to the host) with a credit or debit card, and your total is locked in at booking with no surprise charges. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV type) and released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it left in. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted on your agreement, and dump the tanks before returning. Most security deposits are released within a few business days after the trip ends.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park my RV overnight in Clarksville outside of a campground?
You have a few solid options for where to park an RV in Clarksville beyond traditional campgrounds. Boondocking on public streets is not permitted in town, but some private property owners list driveway and lakefront parking through RVezy and similar host networks. Some retailers in nearby South Hill (about 20 minutes east on US 58) have allowed overnight RV parking with manager approval, but always call ahead since policies change. For the full Buggs Island Lake experience, nothing beats reserving a hookup site at Rudds Creek or Occoneechee. Pro tip: Virginia State Parks do not allow overnight parking outside designated campsites, so always reserve a spot in advance for any stay inside park boundaries.
