Campgrounds near Claypool Hill, Virginia
Claypool Hill sits in Tazewell County in the Appalachian highlands of far southwestern Virginia, at roughly 2,349 feet of elevation near the Bluefield WV-VA micropolitan area. The community works as a practical base for RV travelers heading into the Clinch and Jefferson National Forest country, the Breaks region on the Kentucky border, and the coalfield backroads of Buchanan County.
Overnight options within an easy drive span state parks, private RV parks, and a state forest group camp. Creekside at Hungry Mother State Park sits east near Marion off I-81, while Creek Side RV Park and Laurel Creek RV Park serve travelers closer to Claypool Hill itself. Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park anchors the trail-riding scene to the northwest, and Panther State Forest Group Camp offers a rustic backcountry option across the state line.
Elevations across the region stay above 2,000 feet, which keeps summer nights cooler than the Piedmont and pushes winter camping into a shoulder-season window.
Things to do near Claypool Hill
The area draws RV travelers primarily for mountain recreation. Hungry Mother State Park centers on a 108-acre lake with a sandy swimming beach, a bathhouse, boat rentals including canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and hydrobikes, a boat launch, and a universally accessible fishing pier. More than 17 miles of hiking and biking trails climb the surrounding ridges, and Molly's Knob is the signature summit hike.
Off-highway riding is a major regional draw. The Spearhead Trails system connects to Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park and pulls ATV, UTV, and horseback riders into the coalfield ridges. The Breaks Interstate Park, Clinch Mountain, and the New River headwaters all sit within day-trip range for fishing, paddling, and scenic drives.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Trees leaf out in April and May, mountain laurel and rhododendron peak in late May and June, and lake swimming at Hungry Mother is comfortable from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, cabins and the lodge at Hungry Mother rent by the week, and campground sites fill quickly on weekends.
Summer weekends and festival dates book out first. The Hungry Mother Festival in mid-July and the associated Trail Run and Hike are the signature annual events and pull heavy demand across the region's campgrounds. October brings hardwood color across the Clinch and Jefferson National Forest ridges, cooler nights, and easier last-minute availability.
Winter camping is limited. Hungry Mother State Park offers full-service camping year-round, but many private parks reduce services, and mountain elevations bring snow, ice, and freeze risk on water hookups from December into March.
How to book near Claypool Hill
Sites inside Hungry Mother State Park, including Creekside, are reserved through the Virginia State Parks system at reservevaparks.com or by phone at 1-800-933-PARK. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance, and same-day camping reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. Peak-season weekends and festival dates should be booked as early as the window allows.
Private parks such as Creek Side RV Park, Laurel Creek RV Park, and Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park are booked directly through each operator. Panther State Forest Group Camp is a group-use facility reserved through the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and typically requires advance booking with a minimum party size.
What to expect at Claypool Hill campgrounds
Sites in the region are generally back-in style with a mix of paved and gravel pads. At Creekside inside Hungry Mother State Park, campers get paved sites with electric and water hookups, fire ring, picnic table, and a central bathhouse with universally accessible facilities. Not all state park sites include sewer, so a nearby dump station is the norm.
Cell coverage is uneven across the ridges and hollows, and grocery runs are easiest from Claypool Hill, Cedar Bluff, or Marion. Roads to trailheads and to Panther State Forest include narrow switchbacks and steep grades, so large rigs should plan routes in advance. Bears are active in the surrounding forests, and standard food storage rules apply.
