Campgrounds near Clintwood, Virginia
Clintwood sits in Dickenson County in the coalfield region of far southwestern Virginia, surrounded by the steep ridges and river gorges of the central Appalachians. RV travelers use it as a base for the Russell Fork river country and the Cumberland Mountains. Road access to campgrounds is mountainous and winding, so drivers of larger rigs should plan routes carefully and aim to arrive before dark.
The closest full-service option is Breaks Interstate Park, straddling the Virginia and Kentucky state line about a half-hour north of town. Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park and Camp Mountventures serve riders using the Spearhead Trails ATV network, while Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground offers a more conventional hookup layout south of the area.
For a longer drive south, Natural Tunnel State Park adds a second state-park option with cabins, a lodge, and campground loops that include electric and water sites. Together these five properties cover most RV setups, from primitive tent pads to full electric, water, and sewer sites.
Things to do around Clintwood
The headline attraction is the Russell Fork gorge inside Breaks Interstate Park, often called the Grand Canyon of the South. Visitors hike rim trails, fish the still pools, swim in the seasonal pool, and raft the Class IV to Class VI rapids during scheduled fall water releases. The park also runs a visitor center with historical and cultural exhibits and a moonshine still display.
ATV and off-road riders base out of Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park and Camp Mountventures to access the Spearhead Trails system, which connects into the Breaks area. Horseback riding is also available inside Breaks Interstate Park.
Farther south, Natural Tunnel State Park offers a chairlift down to an 850-foot limestone tunnel still used by freight trains, plus cave tours, guided canoe and kayak trips on the Clinch River in season, and seven walking trails including the short climb to Lover's Leap.

The main RV season in the Clintwood area runs roughly April through October. The main Breaks Interstate Park campground loops (A, B, and C) operate seasonally from spring through fall, while Campground D and the yurt stay open year round, and the motel, cottages, and cabins are also available year round. Natural Tunnel State Park's camping season runs from the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December, and its cabins and lodge stay open year round.
Summer brings warm, humid days and the fullest slate of park programming, including the chairlift at Natural Tunnel and the swimming pool at Breaks. It is also the busiest booking window, so reserve early for weekends. Late September into October delivers Appalachian fall color and the scheduled Russell Fork whitewater releases, which draw paddlers from across the region.
Winter is cold and wet, and most seasonal loops, restaurants, chairlifts, and pools are closed. Roads leading to the parks are narrow and steep, and ice is possible, so winter RV travel here calls for extra caution.
How to book near Clintwood
Breaks Interstate Park sells its campsites, cabins, cottages, lodge rooms, and yurt through the Virginia State Parks reservation system, with inventory opening up to eleven months in advance. Bookings can be made online or by calling the Virginia State Parks reservation center at 1-800-933-7275. Limited first-come, first-served sites exist, with a drop-box payment system at the woodshed for single-night stays when the office is closed.
Natural Tunnel State Park also books through Virginia State Parks up to eleven months out. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, cabins rent by the week, with a two-night minimum outside prime season.
Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park, Camp Mountventures, and Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground book directly through each property. Note that Southern Gap sites can also be reserved through the Breaks reservation portal. Call ahead if driving a large rig, as some sites cannot accommodate long trailers or motorhomes.
What to expect near Clintwood
Roads to every campground in this area are mountainous, narrow, and curvy, with switchbacks and steep grades. The Breaks campground was built before large RVs were common, and only a portion of sites can accommodate bigger rigs, so callers with longer trailers should request a suitable site in advance. The stated maximum length at Breaks is 62 feet for motorhomes and 45 feet for trailers.
Sites include a mix of primitive, electric and water, and full-hookup options with fire rings and picnic tables. Terrain is uneven, so leveling blocks are useful. Bear activity is a routine concern: food, coolers, and trash should be secured, and fires are only permitted in provided fire rings.
Cell service is spotty, grocery stores can sit twenty to forty-five minutes away, and camp stores carry only basics such as groceries, firewood, and simple RV supplies. Stock up before arrival.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clintwood, Virginia. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required for any of the Class A, Class B, Class C, travel trailer, or fifth wheel rentals on RVezy. All guests must be 25 or older, and ID verification happens quickly and securely right inside the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from outside the United States? dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/license-typesWhat kind of protection comes with my Clintwood RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the Cumberland Mountains with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, which matters when you are winding along VA-83 or the steep switchbacks near Breaks Interstate Park. You choose your preferred level of coverage during checkout, not the host, so you pick the option that best fits your trip. Plans vary by coverage level so you can match protection to your trip. If anything goes sideways at 2 a.m. on a back road outside Clintwood, one call connects you with roadside help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Clintwood RV trip?
Booking is genuinely low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a full money-back grace period right after you reserve. That means you can lock in your dates today without losing sleep over weather, work changes, or family plans. After the grace period, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds guests or provides credits so your plans stay protected. You will see all the details clearly during checkout. Pro tip: book early for fall color season in Dickenson County, when foliage along the Russell Fork Gorge peaks in mid to late October and RVs go fast.

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Clintwood is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter while searching and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome four-legged passengers. Breaks Interstate Park, just 20 miles north, allows leashed dogs on hiking trails and at its campgrounds, making it one of the most dog-friendly destinations in Southwest Virginia. The nearby Jefferson National Forest also welcomes pets on most trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, then pack a long leash for evenings around the fire ring under those Appalachian stars.
breakspark.com/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Clintwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Clintwood is one of the best perks on RVezy and a game changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig straight to Breaks Interstate Park, a campground on John W. Flannagan Reservoir, or even a private cabin driveway in Dickenson County, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about backing a 30-foot motorhome down a mountain road. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Just use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service.
breakspark.com/How far can I drive on a Clintwood RV trip?
Plenty far. Clintwood sits at the gateway to some of the most scenic drives in Appalachia, and many RVezy hosts offer generous daily mileage or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. From Clintwood you can reach Breaks Interstate Park in about 25 minutes (20 miles), Natural Tunnel State Park in roughly 90 minutes (60 miles), the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in about 2.5 hours (110 miles), the New River Gorge in West Virginia in about 3 hours (140 miles), and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in about 4 hours (210 miles). Check each listing's mileage policy before booking so you can map your route with confidence.
nps.gov/cuga/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Clintwood, VA?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Clintwood start with Breaks Interstate Park (about 20 miles north), which offers RV sites with full and partial hookups, a dump station, laundry, and views of the 'Grand Canyon of the South.' Pound River Campground, on John W. Flannagan Reservoir, is just minutes from town and great for fishing. Cranesnest and Lower Twin Campgrounds, also on Flannagan, offer quieter lakeside RV sites. For RV camping in Clintwood with full hookups, Breaks Interstate Park is the local favorite. Pro tip: reserve summer and October weekends 3 to 6 months ahead.
breakspark.com/When is the best time to visit Clintwood in an RV?
Clintwood shines from late April through October, with the absolute sweet spots being May for blooming rhododendron and mid-October for jaw-dropping fall color along the Russell Fork Gorge. Summer highs sit comfortably in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit, and mountain evenings cool into the 60s, perfect for campfires. Spring averages 60 to 70 degrees during the day, while fall brings crisp 50 to 70 degree afternoons. Winter is quieter and chilly with lows in the 20s, but many hosts still rent year-round for off-season getaways. Pro tip: late September lines up with the famous Russell Fork whitewater dam releases, drawing kayakers from across the country.
weather.gov/mrx/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Clintwood area?
You are going to do great. First time renting an RV is a common starting point for most RVezy guests, and your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, the awning, the generator, and dumping tanks. Roads around Clintwood are mountainous with some curves on VA-80 and VA-83, so many first-timers choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer in the 22 to 26 foot range for easier handling. Even better, book a host who offers delivery so the RV is already parked and level when you arrive. Pro tip: drive to Breaks Interstate Park first as your basecamp, then explore from there.
511.vdot.virginia.gov/What if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RV rental in Clintwood, VA booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you have a flat on US-460, a dead battery at Pound River Campground, or a generator hiccup deep in the Jefferson National Forest. Your host is also just a message away in the RVezy app and is usually the fastest fix for questions about how something in their RV works. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and roadside number before leaving the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Clintwood RV rental across state lines?
Yes, and you should. An RV road trip from Clintwood is one of the best ways to experience three states in one week. Clintwood sits less than 10 miles from the Kentucky border and within easy reach of West Virginia and Tennessee, and most RVezy hosts welcome travel throughout the continental United States. Popular routes include Clintwood to the New River Gorge in West Virginia (about 3 hours), Clintwood to Pigeon Forge and the Smokies in Tennessee (about 3.5 hours), and Clintwood to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky (about 4 hours). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Just confirm your route with the host before booking longer cross-state itineraries.
nps.gov/neri/index.htmWhat is fuel like for a motorhome rental in Clintwood?
Budgeting fuel for a motorhome rental in Clintwood is straightforward. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get about 10 to 14 mpg, and larger Class A rigs come in around 7 to 10 mpg. Gas in Dickenson County typically runs slightly below the national average, and you will find stations in Clintwood, Haysi, and Grundy, all within a 30 minute radius. Fuel up before heading deep into the Jefferson National Forest, where stations thin out fast. Pro tip: build in a 20 percent fuel buffer for the mountain grades around Pine Mountain, since RVs burn more climbing those Appalachian ridges than on flat highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clintwood?
For peak weekends, book early. Breaks Interstate Park accepts reservations up to 11 months in advance through its own reservation system at breakspark.com, and the popular full-hookup loops fill up months ahead for summer holidays and October fall-color weekends. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on John W. Flannagan Reservoir, including Pound River and Cranesnest, are booked through recreation.gov, typically up to 6 months out. For midweek shoulder-season stays, you can often grab a spot within a week or two. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, search Sunday-through-Thursday arrivals at Breaks Campground D for the best chance at a full-hookup site with a canyon view.
recreation.gov/What are the roads like for driving an RV around Clintwood?
Clintwood roads are mountain roads, and that is part of the charm. Expect winding two-lane highways like VA-80 and VA-83 with grades up to 8 percent, switchbacks, and occasional steep descents heading toward Breaks Interstate Park or Haysi. Roads are well-maintained year-round by the Virginia Department of Transportation, but RVs over 30 feet should plan routes carefully and avoid narrow back roads. Watch for coal trucks on weekdays and morning fog in the valleys. Pro tip: download offline maps before you leave Clintwood since cell service drops in the gorges, and check VDOT's 511 traffic tool before any winter trip for weather-related advisories on Pine Mountain.
virginiadot.org/travel/511.aspWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Clintwood?
You will find more than you might expect for a remote Appalachian setting. Breaks Interstate Park offers full hookups (water, electric, and sewer) at Campground D, partial hookups (water and electric) at Campgrounds A, B, and C, plus a dump station, laundry, bathhouses with hot showers, and a camp store selling propane. Pound River, Cranesnest, and Lower Twin Campgrounds on Flannagan Reservoir offer electric and water hookups along with dump stations. Most sites include a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Clintwood since some backcountry pull-offs in Jefferson National Forest have no potable water, only vault toilets and pack-out trash policies.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234055What features and amenities come inside a Clintwood RV rental?
More creature comforts than you would think. Most RV rentals in Clintwood come fully equipped with a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and proper seatbelts for every passenger. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes often include a TV, generator for boondocking, and outdoor speakers for those quiet evenings by Laurel Lake. Wifi is hit-or-miss in Dickenson County's mountains, so plan to unplug or bring a cellular hotspot. Pro tip: check each listing's photo gallery and amenity list carefully, and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker, kid-friendly bunks, or a backup camera.
fueleconomy.gov/feg/rv.shtmlWhat add-ons and pickup options do RVezy hosts offer in Clintwood?
Lots of helpful extras to make your trip easier. Many Clintwood hosts offer popular add-ons like camping chairs, outdoor grills, generators, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is typically at the host's home or driveway, with most allowing a flexible 1 to 3 p.m. handoff for a full walkthrough. Drop-off is usually the morning of your final day. Mileage policies vary, with many hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and reasonable per-mile fees beyond that. Pro tip: ask about a 'campground setup' add-on, where some hosts will deliver, level, and connect the RV at Breaks Interstate Park or a Flannagan Reservoir campground so you arrive to a ready-made campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clintwood%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's protected checkout when you book, never directly to the host. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (usually authorized rather than charged) on your card before your trip starts and is released after a smooth return with no damage, missing items, or late fees. Deposit amounts vary by RV size and host. To avoid issues, do a quick walkthrough video with your host at pickup and drop-off, return with a full fuel tank and empty waste tanks if required, and communicate any small issues through the RVezy app in real time. That paper trail keeps everyone honest and your deposit refund fast.
