The Blue Ridge Parkway is the headline attraction. Summer brings warm valley temperatures, afternoon thunderstorms, and full campground services. It is the most reliable stretch for boating on Smith Mountain Lake and for hiking without weather-related trail closures. Fall is the peak booking window. Foliage draws heavy traffic to the Blue Ridge Parkway from late September through mid-October, and sites near overlooks fill first. Winter closes higher-elevation Parkway sections during ice and snow events, so trip planning during the colder months should focus on lower-elevation private campgrounds in and around the Roanoke Valley.

Expect a mix of valley and mountain conditions. Private campgrounds along the Roanoke corridor typically offer full hookups, showers, and Wi-Fi. The federal option is more rustic: the Parkway-operated campground at the foot of Sharp Top has water and comfort stations with flush toilets and cold water sinks, but no showers and no hookups. A dump station is available on site. Cell service is unreliable at higher elevations, so downloading maps and reservations before leaving the valley is wise. Black bears are present throughout the region, so food should be stored inside the RV or in provided lockers. Only heat-treated firewood bundled in its original packing and bearing a certification seal from the US Department of Agriculture or a state department of agriculture may be brought onto the Parkway.
