Camping near Elliston, Virginia
Elliston is a small census-designated place in Montgomery County, Virginia, sitting in a Blue Ridge valley along U.S. 460 between Roanoke and Christiansburg. Its location puts RV travelers within a short drive of I-81, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Jefferson National Forest, and the New River Valley, making it a practical base for exploring southwestern Virginia.
Campground options range from full-hookup RV parks to rustic adventure basecamps. Dixie Caverns Campground sits just off I-81 near Salem with on-site cave tours. Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Only Park serves Airstream owners specifically, while Sportsman RV Campground offers riverfront sites along the New River near Radford. Floyd Family Campground occupies a large rural property near the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing operates a 500-acre adventure property in New Castle with tent, RV, and group sites along Craig Creek.
Most private parks in the corridor are open year-round, while National Park Service campgrounds along the Parkway run seasonally, so planning around the calendar matters.
Things to do near Elliston
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the region's headline attraction, with 469 miles of scenic driving and overlooks feeding into hikes, picnic areas, and points of interest like Mabry Mill and the Rocky Knob Recreation Area. Roanoke's Virginia Triple Crown, Dragon's Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs, is within reach for day hikers, and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains carry an extensive network of hiking and mountain-biking trails.
On-the-water options include tubing, canoeing, and swimming on Craig Creek at Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, fishing and paddling on the New River near Sportsman RV Campground, and boating at Claytor Lake State Park.
Rainy-day and family stops include guided cave tours at Dixie Caverns, downtown Roanoke's museums, and the music venues and shops in Floyd along the Crooked Road heritage trail.

Private RV parks in the Elliston area, including Dixie Caverns Campground and Floyd Family Campground, generally operate year-round, though amenities like pools and organized programming taper off outside the warm months. National Park Service campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway follow a different rhythm: sites such as Rocky Knob typically open in late May and close by the end of October, weather permitting.
Summer brings the heaviest bookings, humid afternoons, and frequent thunderstorms in the Roanoke Valley. Fall foliage from mid-October into early November is the busiest reservation window along the Parkway, with campgrounds filling weeks ahead.
Winter is quiet but real. The Parkway itself closes sections without notice for ice, snow, and fog, so RV travelers should check current road status before committing to a Parkway-adjacent site. Spring is milder with abundant rain, wildflowers along Parkway trails, and cooler nights at higher elevations.

We had such an amazing experience with this RV! The entire drop-off process was super smooth and easy, and the gentleman who delivered and set everything up was absolutely great! He was friendly, helpful, and made the whole process stress-free. The RV itself was perfect for our group and came stocked with so many useful amenities that made our stay even better. We had an incredible weekend and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Would definitely recommend and rent again!

How to book campgrounds near Elliston
Private campgrounds in the corridor take reservations directly. Dixie Caverns Campground, Floyd Family Campground, Sportsman RV Campground, and Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Only Park all book through their own websites or by phone, and some sites at Floyd Family Campground and Sportsman RV Campground also appear on third-party platforms. Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing books tent, RV, group, and cabin stays through its own site and through Hipcamp.
Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds use Recreation.gov. Reservable sites at Rocky Knob can be booked up to six months ahead, while remaining sites are held as first-come, first-served and must be claimed at the campground. Book fall-color weekends as far in advance as the six-month window allows.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in this part of Virginia is hilly. Floyd Family Campground and the Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds sit at elevation, and Parkway sites like Rocky Knob are built into mountainsides, so leveling blocks are useful and larger rigs should confirm site length before booking. Rocky Knob accommodates RVs up to about 55 feet on select sites, while other loops are geared to tents and small RVs.
Road noise is a real factor at interstate-adjacent parks. Dixie Caverns Campground and Sportsman RV Campground both sit close to I-81, and travelers should expect steady highway noise.
Black bears live throughout the Blue Ridge, so store food, trash, and coolers securely, especially at Parkway campgrounds. Cell coverage is generally good near I-81 and Roanoke but drops in Parkway hollows and along Craig Creek.
