Camping near Ettrick, Virginia
Ettrick sits in Chesterfield County on the north bank of the Appomattox River, directly across from Petersburg and about 25 miles south of Richmond. The community shares the Petersburg 23803 ZIP code and is best known as the home of Virginia State University. For RV travelers, Ettrick is an easy base for exploring Petersburg National Battlefield, Pamplin Historical Park, Fort Gregg-Adams, and the Richmond metro area, with Interstate 95 a short drive east.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Picture Lake Campground, on Boydton Plank Road southwest of Petersburg, offers around 200 sites with water and electric service, full-hookup pull-throughs, a swimming pool, a fishing lake, camping cabins, kayak rentals, and a camp store. Camptown Campground, South Forty Camp Resort, and Americamps RV Resort provide additional full-hookup options close to the I-95 corridor. Amelia Family Campground sits farther west in Amelia County and is set up for families, with a pool, playground, and pet areas.
For a public-land option, Pocahontas State Park is Virginia's largest state park, located about 20 miles from downtown Richmond in Chesterfield County.
Things to do around Ettrick
History is the main draw. Petersburg National Battlefield preserves the sites of the 1864-65 siege, and Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier sit just west of the city. Old Towne Petersburg has walkable streets, restaurants, and small museums. Richmond, about 25 miles north, adds the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the American Civil War Museum, and the James River waterfront.
Outdoor activity centers on Pocahontas State Park, with 90-plus miles of trails, a seasonal Aquatic Center, fishing and boating just outside Richmond. Picture Lake Campground rents kayaks and has on-site fishing, and the adjacent Virginia Motorsports Park hosts drag-racing events on select weekends.

Ettrick has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring, from March through May, brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and steady rainfall. It is generally the most comfortable window for RV travel, though overnight lows can still dip near freezing in early March.
Summer is hot and humid, with July averaging a high around 90°F and a low near 69°F, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. This is peak camping season: private campgrounds run at capacity on holiday weekends, and Pocahontas State Park's Aquatic Center, boat rentals, and camp store operate on their full seasonal schedule. Hurricane remnants can affect the region between August and October, occasionally bringing heavy rain and flooding along the Appomattox and James rivers.
Fall offers cool nights, lower humidity, and strong foliage color from mid-October into early November. Winter is chilly but mild by East Coast standards, with average highs in the low 50s and only light snowfall. Douthat, Hungry Mother, Pocahontas and Shenandoah River state parks keep full-service campgrounds open year-round, and several private parks near Petersburg also stay open all year.
How to book campgrounds near Ettrick
Private campgrounds in the Petersburg area, including Picture Lake Campground, South Forty Camp Resort, Camptown Campground, Amelia Family Campground, and Americamps RV Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holidays fill early, so booking several weeks out is recommended, especially for pull-through and 50-amp sites.
For Pocahontas State Park, reservations run through the Virginia State Parks system at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK. Overnight accommodations, picnic shelters and some meeting facilities are available for reservations up to 11 months in advance, and campsites may be reserved up until 2 p.m. on the date of arrival. All reservations require payment in full at the time the reservation is made, and cancellations result in penalty fees, so read the policies carefully before paying.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of transient RV sites and long-term or seasonal residents at the private parks around Petersburg. A lot of campsites at Picture Lake are monthly or annual, so transient sites and shaded pads can be limited; call ahead if a specific site type matters. Sites in the area are typically gravel or paved, and Picture Lake advertises all sites with 30 and 50-amp service, a store, propane fill-up, and kayak rental.
Cell coverage is generally good across Chesterfield and Dinwiddie counties, though campground Wi-Fi ranges from adequate to overloaded on busy weekends. Ticks and mosquitoes are common from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent and check for ticks after hiking. At Pocahontas State Park, check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is 1 p.m., and generators are restricted in state park campgrounds.

Virginia does not require a commercial driver's license or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers, even the big Class A rigs. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto association) and you're set. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly the licensing piece is handled, so you can focus on planning your Petersburg battlefield tour instead.

dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Ettrick?
Yes, RV delivery in Ettrick is one of the best options for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts in the Tri-Cities and Richmond area will drive the RV to your campsite, your home, or a nearby park like Pocahontas State Park or Petersburg/South KOA, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no nervous first drive through Petersburg traffic. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your destination address to confirm distance and any delivery fee.
