Campgrounds and RV parks near Fort Lee, VA

History is the dominant draw. Petersburg National Battlefield preserves the Union siege lines from the closing year of the Civil War, and Pamplin Historical Park interprets the breakthrough that ended the campaign. On post, the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum and the U.S. Army Women's Museum are open to the public with a valid ID. For outdoor plans, Pocahontas State Park offers over 64 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, an Aquatic Center with several pools and water slides, and paddling on Swift Creek Lake. Ed Allen's Campgrounds on Chickahominy Lake books pontoon and fishing boats for guests and day visitors. Families traveling with kids often pair a battlefield morning with an afternoon at the pool at South Forty Camp Resort or Picture Lake Campground, both of which allow on-site swimming for registered guests.

Central Virginia has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Peak camping season runs from late spring through early fall, with the busiest weekends tied to Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Sites at Pocahontas State Park fill quickly in summer and typically need to be booked well in advance through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for touring battlefields and hiking, with mild days and lower humidity. Wildflowers appear in April, and hardwood color usually peaks in late October and early November. Summers are often hot and humid with heat indexes often topping 100 degrees, and visitors are encouraged to bring lots of water and to use sunblock. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so shaded sites and 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Winter camping is possible: several private parks stay open year-round, and Pocahontas is one of the state parks with full-service campgrounds open year-round, while Ed Allen's Campgrounds operates on a seasonal schedule that typically runs from spring into late fall.

Expect wooded, level to gently rolling terrain, gravel or dirt pads at most private parks, and paved or gravel sites that are mostly level through Pocahontas State Park. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the Petersburg and Chester area, and campground Wi-Fi ranges from strong to spotty depending on how full the park is. Many local parks host a mix of overnight travelers and long-term or seasonal residents, which gives places like Camptown Campground and Picture Lake Campground a residential feel in sections. Front-of-park sites at South Forty Camp Resort tend to be closer to the pool and playground, with quieter sites toward the back. Bring bug spray from late spring through early fall, plan for humid nights in July and August, and confirm quiet hours and pool hours at check-in, since these vary by park.
