Campgrounds and RV parks near Halifax, VA

Buggs Island Lake is the main draw. It covers roughly 48,000 acres across Virginia and North Carolina and supports boating, water skiing, kayaking, and freshwater fishing for bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie, and perch. Three boat ramps and a private concession renting boats and snacks operate at Occoneechee State Park, and Staunton River State Park has a boat launch plus an Olympic-size swimming pool with a 70-foot water slide. On land, Staunton River offers more than 17 miles of multi-use trails open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, along with a nine-hole disc golf course. The park is also an International Dark Sky Park, with ranger-led stargazing programs and telescope rentals. Occoneechee adds about 20 miles of trails, static and 3-D archery ranges, a 1,200-seat lakefront amphitheater, a playground, and a splash park that runs May through Labor Day. Downtown Clarksville is about a mile east of the Occoneechee entrance for supply runs.

Both state parks are open year-round for camping, but seasonal rules shape what a trip looks like. Occoneechee has no designated swim area; the splash park is the primary water feature and runs May through Labor Day, while unguarded swimming along the shoreline is allowed at your own risk. At Occoneechee, Campground B typically operates May through October, and Campground C runs from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Summer is peak season on Buggs Island Lake, with warm water, long daylight, and heavy weekend demand at both state parks. Late spring and early fall are typically quieter and comfortable for hiking, with cooler nights that suit RV travel. Winter brings mild but chilly weather and near-empty campgrounds, though full hookups can be limited off-season at some private parks. Two statewide rules to plan around: open fires, including wood and charcoal, are prohibited in Virginia state parks from midnight to 4 p.m. between February 15 and April 30, and firewood may not be brought into or removed from Staunton River State Park due to an Emerald Ash Borer infestation in Halifax County. Self-contained camp stoves remain permitted during the burn ban.

State park RV sites at Staunton River and Occoneechee have water and electric hookups, a parking spur, table, fire ring, grate, and lantern post, with pads sized for rigs up to about 45 feet at Staunton River and 30 to 35 feet at Occoneechee. There is a dump station at the Staunton River equestrian campground and at Occoneechee. Bathhouses have flush toilets and hot showers, and laundry is available at Staunton River's campground bathhouse. Some sites in Occoneechee's Campground C sit right on the shoreline; waterfront sites tend to be smaller than interior loops, and leveling blocks help on multi-level pads. Private parks in the area offer full hookups, laundry, and camp stores. Cell service near the lakes is generally usable but not guaranteed at every site, and shaded, wooded pads are common throughout the region.
