Camping near Hampden-Sydney, Virginia
Hampden-Sydney sits in Virginia's Piedmont, a rolling landscape of hardwood forest, small lakes, and slow rivers between Farmville and the Appomattox area. The region draws RV travelers looking for quiet state-park campgrounds rather than resort-style destinations, with several parks within a short drive of town.
The closest option is Twin Lakes State Park, which sits on Goodwin Lake and Prince Edward Lake and offers a swimming beach, boat rentals, hiking, and a family-friendly campground. Holliday Lake State Park lies deeper in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest and centers on a stocked lake with a guarded beach and connector access to the Carter Taylor Multi-use Trail. Farther west, James River State Park is wrapped up in rolling green foothills, stunning views, and three miles of shoreline, and includes the Horseshoe equestrian loop for guests traveling with horse trailers.
For a private-park alternative, Paradise Lake Family Campground and Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort offer full-hookup style stays outside the state-park reservation system, useful when state sites fill up on peak weekends.
Things to do near Hampden-Sydney
Water is the main draw. Twin Lakes State Park has swimming, fishing, and paddling on two lakes, plus miles of hiking trails through hardwood forest. Holliday Lake State Park adds a guarded swim beach, a self-guided aquatic trail for paddlers, and fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, chain pickerel, and yellow perch.
James River State Park offers a stretch of freshwater river where anglers can target smallmouth bass, catfish and sunfish, along with 22 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking and bridle use. There are no designated swimming areas at James River; Holliday Lake State Park, 25 miles away, has lake swimming.
History travelers can pair a campground stay with Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, a short drive from Holliday Lake.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in central Virginia. Daytime highs sit in the mild sixties and low seventies, humidity is manageable, and the hardwood canopy delivers strong fall color from mid-October into early November. Bugs are lighter than in mid-summer, and state-park campgrounds are open with full services.
Summer is peak season. Lakes are warm enough for swimming, boat rentals are running, and park programs are in full swing, but heat and humidity climb and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Weekends book out well in advance, particularly around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Winter is the quiet season. Twin Lakes campground is open seasonally from the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December, and the same seasonal window applies at James River State Park's Red Oak and Horseshoe campgrounds. Holliday Lake State Park stays open year-round, but concession services, boat rentals, and the guarded beach shut down outside the warm months.
How to book a site near Hampden-Sydney
Sites at Twin Lakes, Holliday Lake, and James River State Park are reserved through the Virginia State Parks reservation system operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Reservations can be made by calling the Virginia State Parks Customer Service Center at 800-933-PARK (7275), and for most facilities reservations may also be made online, and reservations may be made up to 11 months in advance, with same-day camping allowed until 2 p.m.
For high-demand weekends, particularly summer holidays and October leaf-peeping dates, plan to book as early as the window allows. The Horseshoe loop at James River is small, with only about ten hookup sites, and equestrian travelers tend to reserve it well in advance.
Paradise Lake Family Campground and Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort are private and book directly with the operator. These are worth calling if state-park inventory is sold out or if a longer full-hookup stay is preferred.
What to expect on-site
State-park campgrounds in this area lean rustic rather than resort. Twin Lakes has 33 campsites of various sizes, each with water and electric hookup (outlets provide 20 and 30-amp current), a fire ring and a picnic table, along with a central bathhouse and dump station. There is no Wi-Fi in the park, and cell service across the region can be spotty.
The Horseshoe Campground at James River offers equestrian campers pull-through sites with water and electric (20-, 30-, 50-amp) hookups that fit trailers up to 40 feet, along with 20 covered stalls and 5 tent pads. Approach roads are narrow, so drivers of larger rigs should plan the route in advance.
Firewood is available for sale in the campground, and Virginia parks ask visitors not to bring outside firewood because of pest quarantines. Quiet hours and visitor curfews are enforced, and a Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for anyone fishing park waters.
