Campgrounds near Hillsville, Virginia
Hillsville sits on Virginia's Blue Ridge Plateau in Carroll County, at the crossroads of I-77 and US-58/221. The town is a practical RV base for the Blue Ridge Parkway, the New River Trail, and the Fancy Gap corridor, with campgrounds concentrated within roughly ten miles of the interstate exits.
Lake Ridge RV Resort is the largest full-service option close to town, with a lake, pools, and cabin rentals in addition to RV sites. Utt's Campground offers a smaller, quieter setting nearby. Closer to the Parkway itself, Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Journey and Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground put travelers within minutes of the scenic drive.
Elevations near Hillsville sit around 2,600 to 3,000 feet, which keeps summers cooler than the Piedmont and produces genuine four-season weather. Grades on I-77 are gentle, but the Parkway drops sharply at Fancy Gap and fog is common, so plan mountain sections for daylight.
Things to do around Hillsville
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the main draw, with overlooks, hiking trails, and Mabry Mill roughly thirty miles north at milepost 176 near Meadows of Dan. New River Trail State Park, a fifty-seven-mile rail-trail through Grayson, Carroll, Wythe, and Pulaski counties, is suitable for biking, hiking, and horseback riding along the New River.
Day-trip range covers Grayson Highlands State Park for wild ponies and Appalachian Trail access, Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, and Shot Tower Historical State Park near Foster Falls. Galax, about twenty-five minutes south, is a hub for old-time and bluegrass music, and Mount Airy, North Carolina, is roughly forty-five minutes away.
Anglers can fish stocked trout streams in Carroll County, and paddlers use the New River for kayaking, canoeing, and tubing.

Peak RV season runs from late May through October, with the strongest demand around the Hillsville Labor Day Flea Market and October foliage weekends. Private parks near Hillsville fill fast on those dates, and sites at Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground and the Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Journey should be locked in well ahead.
Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, with March averaging the highest monthly rainfall at around four inches. Trails can be muddy and Parkway visibility is often reduced by fog, particularly at Fancy Gap where the mountain drops sharply. Summer is warm and humid but noticeably cooler than lower elevations, with afternoon thunderstorms common.
Fall delivers the driest month, September, followed by peak leaf color in mid to late October. Winter is cold with occasional snow and ice; some private campgrounds close or reduce services, and Blue Ridge Parkway sections are frequently gated after storms. Check road status before booking a winter trip.
How to book a campsite near Hillsville
Virginia State Parks, including nearby New River Trail State Park primitive sites at Cliffview and Millrace, take reservations up to eleven months ahead through reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds such as Rocky Knob at milepost 167 are booked through recreation.gov, with a six-month reservation window.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Lake Ridge RV Resort, Utt's Campground, Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Journey, and Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground each take reservations directly by phone or website. For Labor Day flea market weekend and October foliage weekends, book several months out.
Most RV renters do not need a special license in Virginia; a standard driver's license covers Class B, Class C, travel trailers, and most fifth wheels.
What to expect on-site

Lake Ridge RV Resort is big-rig friendly and includes amenities such as pools, mini golf, paddle boats, and a stocked lake. Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground provides full hook-up RV sites plus cabins and tent sites on a wooded property adjacent to the Parkway.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain and cooler nights than nearby lowlands. Cell coverage is generally solid near I-77 but can drop along Parkway spurs. The Parkway itself has no commercial fuel stations, so fill up at Exit 14 in Hillsville or Exit 8 at Fancy Gap before heading up.

Always check the mileage policy on the listing before booking, and message the host if you're planning a longer Hillsville RV trip. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillsville,%20VirginiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Hillsville?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Hillsville offers. Popular picks include Lake Ridge RV Resort on Double Cabin Road (big-rig friendly with a pool), Fancy Gap KOA Holiday just south of town near the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Wytheville KOA about 30 minutes west off I-81 with full hookups. For something quieter, head to Claytor Lake State Park, roughly an hour north, for lakeside sites and hiking, or New River Trail State Park near Galax. Tip: reserve Virginia State Park sites at reservevaparks.com up to 11 months in advance, especially for fall foliage weekends.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/claytor-lakeWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Hillsville?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Hillsville. May through October typically brings comfortable daytime highs in the mid-60s to low-80s thanks to Hillsville's roughly 2,700-foot elevation on the Blue Ridge Plateau, with cool nights perfect for campfires. June through August is peak family season with warm days and lush green mountains, while late September and early October deliver spectacular fall foliage along the Parkway. Winters can dip into the 20s with occasional snow, so many campgrounds operate March through November. Tip: time your visit for the Hillsville Labor Day Flea Market, one of the largest in the country.
weather.gov/rnk/I'm first time renting an RV, will I get help learning how to use it?
Yes, you're never on your own. Every RVezy host in Hillsville provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery if they're bringing the RV to you), covering how to operate the slide-outs, awning, propane, generator, water systems, and dump procedures. Many hosts also share a quick-reference guide or video link you can rewatch from your campsite. If a question pops up at your campground or along the Blue Ridge Parkway, you can message your host directly through the app. Tip: take a phone video of the orientation, especially the dashboard and the water heater switch, your future self will thank you.

You can also message your host directly, most know their RV inside and out and can troubleshoot quickly. You're perfectly positioned for cross-state adventures: roll south down the Blue Ridge Parkway into North Carolina to Asheville (about 2.5 hours), east to Virginia Beach (about 5.5 hours), or north to Shenandoah National Park (about 3.5 hours). Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, and some permit trips into Canada with advance notice, just message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Tip: the stretch of Parkway from Mabry Mill (MP 176) to Cumberland Knob (MP 217) is among the most scenic miles in the region.

Plan smart and your fuel budget will stay reasonable. Class C motorhomes around Hillsville average 8-12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans 16-20 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers 10-14 MPG. Stations along I-77 at Exit 14 (Hillsville) and Exit 8 (Fancy Gap) are usually convenient stops. The Blue Ridge Parkway itself has no fuel stations, so top off before you enter. Tip: for a 4-day, 400-mile loop covering Galax, Mount Airy, and Floyd, budget roughly $150 to $200 in fuel for a Class C, less for a campervan rental Hillsville travelers prefer for mountain driving.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hillsville?

I-77 runs right through town with easy access to RV-friendly fuel stops at Exit 14, and US-58/221 offers smooth two-lane driving through Galax and Wytheville. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a dream for slow scenic driving, but note the 45 MPH speed limit, occasional low-clearance tunnels, and no commercial fuel stations on the Parkway itself. Fog can roll in fast at Fancy Gap (Exit 8 on I-77) where the mountain drops sharply, so reduce speed if visibility drops. Tip: stick to I-77 and US-58 for long hauls and save the Parkway for daylight cruising.

Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You'll pay the full booking total (rental fees, RVezy service fee, and your chosen protection plan) at checkout using a major credit card. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is pre-authorized as a hold on your card before pickup, not charged, then released after the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition. Deposit amounts are shown on each Hillsville listing before you book. Tip: do a thorough walk-around photo and video at pickup and drop-off, timestamped photos are your best friend if any post-trip questions come up about cleanliness or wear.
