Campgrounds near Hurt, Virginia
Hurt is a small town in Pittsylvania County in south-central Virginia, sitting between the Staunton River and the foothills of the Blue Ridge. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of two major reservoirs, Leesville Lake to the west and Smith Mountain Lake just beyond it, which anchor most of the camping options in the area.
Leesville Lake Campground, LLC sits directly on the water and caters to boaters and anglers. Smith Mountain Campground and Halesford Harbour Resort serve the Smith Mountain Lake side, with lake access and full-hookup sites. Sweetwater RV Park offers a quieter inland base, while Lynchburg RV Resort is the closest full-service resort option toward the city of Lynchburg to the northeast.
Most trips from Hurt combine lake time with day drives to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Booker T. Washington National Monument, or historic sites in Lynchburg and Appomattox. The mix of private lakeside parks and inland RV resorts makes the area workable for both short weekend stays and longer family trips.
Things to do near Hurt
Water recreation is the main draw. Smith Mountain Lake supports boating, wakeboarding, tubing, swimming, and striped-bass fishing, with public launches and marinas around the shoreline. Leesville Lake, the lower reservoir in the Smith Mountain pumped-storage system, is quieter and popular for kayaking, paddleboarding, and bass fishing. Smith Mountain Lake State Park adds a public swimming beach, boat rentals, a fishing pier, and miles of hiking trails.
Inland, the Blue Ridge Parkway is roughly an hour west and offers overlooks, short hikes, and picnic areas. Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy is a good half-day stop for families. Lynchburg adds urban options: the Riverwalk along the James River, Amazement Square children's museum, and the Old City Cemetery. Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is a straightforward day trip east.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lake temperatures are warm enough for swimming and most private campgrounds are fully open. Weekends around the Fourth of July and Labor Day fill earliest, and lakefront sites at Smith Mountain and Leesville typically book several weeks or months ahead.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with lower demand and cooler nights. Fall color on the surrounding ridges usually peaks in mid to late October, which brings a second wave of bookings tied to Blue Ridge Parkway drives. Spring can be wet, and the Staunton River and its tributaries occasionally run high after heavy rain.
Winter is the quiet season. Some private campgrounds reduce services or close entirely from late fall through early spring, while others stay open with limited hookups. Smith Mountain Lake State Park operates its campground from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, so confirming open dates before arrival is important for any trip outside the core summer window.

Booking and reservations for Hurt campgrounds
Private campgrounds around Hurt, including Leesville Lake Campground, LLC, Lynchburg RV Resort, Sweetwater RV Park, Smith Mountain Campground, and Halesford Harbour Resort, are booked directly through each park's website or by phone. Waterfront and full-hookup pull-through sites are the first to go for summer weekends, so reserving well in advance is recommended.
Smith Mountain Lake State Park, the main public campground option, is booked through the Virginia State Parks reservation system at reservevaparks.com or by phone, with a maximum window of 11 months in advance. Popular holiday weekends typically sell out quickly once the window opens. For extended stays, check each park's policy on monthly rates, pet rules, and rig-length limits before locking in dates.
What to expect camping near Hurt
Terrain around Hurt is rolling, with wooded lots and gravel or paved pads at most parks. Lakefront sites at Leesville and Smith Mountain tend to be tighter and sloped, so leveling blocks are useful. Full hookups are common at the resort-style parks, while Smith Mountain Lake State Park offers water and 20/30-amp electric at its hookup sites, with a dump station on site and no generator use permitted.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near Lynchburg and along U.S. 29 but can drop in the coves around Leesville Lake and on back roads toward Smith Mountain. Summer humidity is high, biting insects are active from late spring through early fall, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Black bears are present in the wider region, so standard food-storage practices apply at any campground bordering forest land.
