Campgrounds and RV parks near La Crosse, VA

Water activities drive most trips. Kerr Lake is a premier fishing destination, renowned for its plentiful bass, catfish, and crappie, and its long open water suits waterskiing, wakeboarding, and sailing. All access areas provide at least one boat ramp, and a privately owned marina at Satterwhite Point offers fuel, slips, dry stack storage, service, and supplies. Lake Gaston offers similar boating and fishing plus quieter coves for kayaks and paddleboards. On land, families use swim beach areas, picnic shelters, and community buildings spread across the recreation area. Private parks add pools, mini-golf, and planned-activity amenities: Lake Gaston Americamps, for example, adds swimming and recreation options that keep younger campers busy when the boat is off the water.

The main camping season runs from spring through fall. Kimball Point operates from early April through late October, and several other Kerr Lake State Recreation Area access areas follow similar seasonal schedules. Satterwhite Point stays open year-round. Private Lake Gaston parks generally operate on longer schedules but reduce amenities in the off-season. Summer is peak. June through August brings hot, humid weather with typical highs near 90°F, and holiday weekends drive strong demand at Kerr Lake state campgrounds. Reservations for waterfront sites at Kimball Point are notoriously hard to get on summer weekends, with returning campers booking as soon as sites become available. Spring and fall are milder and less crowded. Water levels on Kerr Lake can rise significantly after heavy rainfall, so shoreline sites occasionally see waterline changes. Winter camping is possible at year-round access areas, but many services and swim areas close for the off-season. Kerr Lake SRA is undergoing ongoing construction to improve campgrounds and restrooms, and beginning August 1, 2026, JC Cooper, Nutbush Area 1 (North), Nutbush Area 3 and 4 (South), and Hibernia will be closed for the season, so confirm access-area status before booking.

Sites at Kerr Lake state access areas are wooded, spacious, and often waterfront, with a mix of electric and non-electric options. There are no sewer hookups on any campsites, but a dump station is located in the campground, so plan tank management accordingly. Bathhouses are standard, and packing 60 to 100 feet of extra hose is prudent because water hookups vary by site. Private parks around Lake Gaston offer more full-hookup RV sites, pools, camp stores, and Wi-Fi, but sites can be closer together and some pads require significant leveling. Lake Gaston Americamps includes waterfront tent sites, cabins, and a mix of RV sites. Firewood is not available for sale at the park, and firewood restrictions apply in the recreation area to protect against invasive pests, so buy local rather than transport wood in. Quiet hours are from 10pm until 7am and are strictly enforced, and generators must be turned off during quiet hours.
