Campgrounds near Marion, Virginia
Marion sits in Smyth County in southwestern Virginia, just off Interstate 81 in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town is the gateway to Hungry Mother State Park, one of the original Virginia state parks, built around a lake with a sandy beach, boat rentals, and a network of hiking trails.
RV travelers use Marion as a base for two of Virginia's highest-elevation parks: Hungry Mother State Park immediately north of town, and Grayson Highlands State Park about an hour south near Mount Rogers and Whitetop, Virginia's two tallest peaks. Both parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and share a single reservation system.
Closest campgrounds include Creekside - Hungry Mother State Park, Grayson Highlands State Park, Creeper Trail Campground Inc near the Virginia Creeper Trail, Laurel Creek RV Park, and Creek Side RV Park. Options range from state-park loops with electric and water hookups to privately run RV parks aimed at cyclists riding the Creeper Trail out of Damascus and Abingdon.
Things to do around Marion
Hungry Mother State Park anchors most family trips. The park has a swimming beach open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, a fishing pier, boat rentals including kayaks and paddleboards, and trails that connect from the campgrounds, including the climb to Molly's Knob.
Grayson Highlands State Park draws hikers for its high-elevation balds, free-roaming wild ponies, and direct access to the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. Bouldering is popular, with hundreds of established problems on the rock outcrops near Massie Gap.
The Virginia Creeper Trail is the region's marquee cycling route. Following Hurricane Helene damage, the upper section from Damascus to Whitetop Station is closed for reconstruction and is not scheduled to reopen for some time, while the lower Abingdon-to-Damascus segment remains open with bike rentals in Damascus.

Peak season at Hungry Mother State Park runs April through October, with summer and holiday weekends filling quickly. The swimming beach operates Memorial Day through Labor Day, and Camp Burson stays open year-round while Creekside and Royal Oak follow a warmer-weather schedule. Cabins are available year-round.
Grayson Highlands offers full-service camping May through October. In March, April, and November the campground drops to primitive service with porta-johns and no water, and the park closes to camping from the first Monday in December through the first Friday in March. The Appalachian Trail and Virginia Highlands Horse Trail stay open year-round, but high-elevation weather can turn quickly.
Summer thunderstorms are common in the mountains and can cause flash flooding along creeks. Fall brings foliage in October and cold nights above 3,000 feet. Winter RV camping is limited to Hungry Mother's Camp Burson loop and select private parks in the valley.
How to book a campsite near Marion
Virginia state park sites at Hungry Mother and Grayson Highlands are reserved through the Virginia State Parks system online or by calling 800-933-PARK. Reservations open eleven months in advance and must be made at least one day before arrival.
Grayson Highlands' Chestnut Hollow horse camp is phone-only, and equestrian campers get booking priority, with non-equestrian campers able to reserve within 30 days of arrival. Sites at both state parks fill fast on summer and holiday weekends, so booking several months out is a safe target.
Private options such as Creeper Trail Campground Inc, Laurel Creek RV Park, and Creek Side RV Park are booked directly with the operator. If state-park sites are full, the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in the Jefferson National Forest is the recommended overflow, reservable by calling 800-280-2267.
What to expect on the ground
Elevations in Smyth and Grayson counties range from about 2,000 feet in the valley to more than 5,000 feet at Mount Rogers and Whitetop. Nights run cooler than the forecast for Marion town, especially at Grayson Highlands, where mornings can be foggy and windy even in summer.
Creekside at Hungry Mother has electric and water hookups on 19 paved sites, but the access road is tight and RVs longer than 30 feet should book Camp Burson instead. Grayson Highlands' Hickory Ridge loop offers standard and electric-and-water sites with a dump station, but no full sewer hookups, and backcountry camping is not permitted inside park boundaries.
Cell service is spotty in the mountains, firewood is sold on-site at the state parks, and a Virginia freshwater fishing license is required at Hungry Mother Lake and the park's stocked streams.

July and August are warm (highs in the low 80s) and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, great for lake swimming but book sites with electric hookups for AC. Winter RV trips are possible since some sites stay open year-round, but expect cold nights and occasional snow on Route 16 toward Mount Rogers.

Class C motorhomes typically get 8-10 miles per gallon, Class A rigs 6-8 mpg, and campervan rental Marion options (Class B) can hit 15-18 mpg. You'll find easy fill-ups at the Marion exits along I-81 and in nearby Wytheville. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop through Mount Rogers and Damascus in a Class C, plan on roughly $120-$160 in fuel at current Virginia prices. Pro tip: top off in Marion before heading up Route 16, gas stations get sparse past Sugar Grove.
fueleconomy.gov/How far in advance should I book a campground near Marion?
For peak summer weekends, book about 6 months out, that's when many Virginia State Parks reservation windows open. Hungry Mother State Park sites disappear fastest for Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and the Hungry Mother Festival weekend. Reserve through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. National Forest sites at Beartree and Raccoon Branch open up to 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov. For midweek spring or fall trips, 2-3 weeks ahead is usually plenty. The fun gets twisty once you turn south on Route 16 toward Hungry Mother State Park and Mount Rogers, where you'll find tight curves, steeper grades near Whitetop, and low-hanging tree branches that can surprise drivers in tall Class A motorhomes. Take it slow, downshift on descents, and watch your overall height. Winter brings occasional snow at higher elevations from December through March.
