The closest options lean toward full-service private parks. For a public-land experience, Pocahontas State Park in nearby Chesterfield is the anchor destination, with wooded campsites, yurts, camping cabins, and lodge and cabin rentals managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

For Pocahontas State Park and other Virginia State Parks, reservations go through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, either online at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-7275. Reservations may be made up to 11 months in advance, and payment in full is required at the time of booking. Same-day camping reservations are accepted until 2 p.m. on the day of arrival. Private parks such as Picture Lake, Camptown, South Forty, Amelia Family, and Americamps take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holidays, booking several weeks out is strongly recommended, since sites fill quickly and many parks require multi-night minimums around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
