Camping near Pearisburg, Virginia
Pearisburg sits in Giles County in southwest Virginia, tucked into the foothills of Pearis Mountain with the New River curving around its eastern edge. Roughly 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail passes through Giles County, and the county contains a large share of the Jefferson National Forest. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the river, the AT, and the surrounding national forest.
Most campgrounds within a short drive of Pearisburg cluster along the New River corridor between Pembroke, Eggleston, and Rich Creek. Options range from full-hookup riverside sites at Eggleston Springs Campground and Sportsman RV Campground to the larger Kairos Resort, which mixes RV sites with wilderness and primitive camping. New River Junction Campground sits directly on the water in Pembroke and caters to paddlers and tubers.
Across the state line, Pipestem RV Park and Campground provides a private option near Pipestem, West Virginia, close to Pipestem Resort State Park. The mix of private campgrounds and public lands makes the area workable for weekend trips and longer river-based stays.
Things to do around Pearisburg
The New River is the main draw. The New River Water Trail runs through Giles County for roughly 37 miles, and outfitters in Pembroke rent kayaks, canoes, and tubes with shuttle service. The river is widely regarded as one of the top smallmouth bass fisheries in the country. Eggleston Springs Campground and New River Junction Campground both sit directly on the water with river access.
Hiking is the other core activity. Angels Rest on Pearis Mountain is the classic climb from town, and Cascades Falls in the Jefferson National Forest is a family-friendly out-and-back to a 66-foot waterfall. The Appalachian Trail crosses right through Pearisburg, so day-hikers can pick up short sections without a shuttle.
Mountain Lake Lodge, a filming location for parts of Dirty Dancing, sits about 20 minutes from town and is open to day visitors.

Peak camping season runs from late May through early October, when river levels are safe for tubing and paddling and overnight temperatures stay comfortable. Summer weekends around Virginia Tech football and family holidays fill riverside campgrounds first, so book Eggleston Springs Campground, New River Junction Campground, and Sportsman RV Campground several weeks ahead for those dates.
Spring brings the strongest thru-hiker traffic on the Appalachian Trail. Northbound hikers typically reach Pearisburg in springtime after roughly 600 trail miles, and shuttle demand around town rises accordingly. Spring is also a wet stretch, with frequent rain and higher river flows that can limit some paddling sections.
Fall delivers reliable color across the Blue Ridge and cooler nights, making it a strong shoulder-season window for RVers. Winters are cold with occasional snow, and many private campgrounds scale back services or close portions of their sites even when the property technically stays open year-round.
How to book campgrounds near Pearisburg
Private campgrounds in the Pearisburg area, including Eggleston Springs Campground, Kairos Resort, New River Junction Campground, Sportsman RV Campground, and Pipestem RV Park and Campground, are booked directly through each property's website or by phone. Some also list availability on third-party platforms such as Hipcamp or ReserveAmerica. Riverside sites and full-hookup pull-throughs go first on summer weekends and Virginia Tech home-game weekends, so reserve well in advance.
For the nearby Pipestem Resort State Park campground in West Virginia, reservations run through the West Virginia State Parks system online, by phone, or at the campground office. Weekend stays require a minimum of two consecutive nights on Friday and Saturday, with a one-night minimum Sunday through Thursday.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the river campgrounds are narrow and winding. Eggleston Road is curvy in parts and drivers with larger rigs should call ahead, though some sites accommodate longer fifth wheels. Plan arrivals during daylight.
Train noise is a real factor along the New River. Active rail lines run on both sides of the river and can be loud at night. Light sleepers should pack earplugs.
Cell service is spotty in the river valleys and gorges. Download offline maps before leaving Pearisburg, top up on groceries in town, and expect basic bathhouses rather than resort-style amenities at the smaller private campgrounds. Black bears live throughout the surrounding Jefferson National Forest, so store food and trash accordingly.
