Campgrounds near Richlands, Virginia
Richlands sits in the Clinch River valley of southwest Virginia, in Tazewell County, with access to public campgrounds in the surrounding Appalachian mountains and to private RV parks along nearby creeks and highways. The area draws RV travelers looking for hiking, fishing, ATV riding on the Spearhead Trails system, and elk viewing in the reclaimed coalfields to the north.
The closest full-service state park option is Creekside at Hungry Mother State Park in Smyth County, where Hungry Mother Creek winds through a shaded forest setting and 19 paved sites offer electric and water hookups, a fire ring, and a picnic table. A sharp turn in the access road limits vehicle size to 30 feet, so larger rigs are directed to Camp Burson elsewhere in the park.
Across the state line in McDowell County, West Virginia, Panther State Forest Group Camp anchors a 7,810-acre forest and wildlife management area with hunting, fishing, a summer swimming pool, and a 60-person barracks-style group facility. Closer to town, Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park, Creek Side RV Park, and Laurel Creek RV Park serve travelers who want full hookups without a long drive from Route 460.
Things to do near Richlands
The area is built around outdoor recreation. Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park sits at the trailhead for the Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon ATV, OHV, and mountain bike trail, with connected access to more than 200 miles of trails across 7,900 acres, plus ride-out access to the ATV-friendly towns of Grundy and Haysi. Seasonal elk viewing and guided elk tours are available in the surrounding reclaimed mine lands.
At Hungry Mother State Park, about an hour east, a 108-acre lake offers a sandy swimming beach, boat rentals, fishing, and a boat launch, with over 17 miles of hiking and biking trails through the surrounding mountains. Canoe, kayak, and paddleboat rentals are available seasonally.
At Panther State Forest, trout-stocked Panther Creek runs alongside the campground, and hiking trails climb to a fire tower and connect down to the seasonal swimming pool.

Summer is peak season. Hungry Mother's beach, boat rentals, and camp store run heaviest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and cabins and the lodge rent by the week during that window. Reserving well ahead of summer weekends is expected. At Panther State Forest, the swimming pool operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and the Group Camp is rented by the week during the same period, with a two-night minimum in spring and fall.
Shoulder seasons bring cooler nights and thinner crowds. Fall foliage across the Clinch and Iron mountains typically peaks in mid to late October. Spring runs cool and wet, with trout stocking on Panther Creek and green-up along the trails.
Winter camping is limited but possible. Creekside at Hungry Mother is open year-round through the Virginia State Parks system, and the Panther State Forest campground is also open year-round, weather permitting. Snow and ice on mountain approach roads are common from December through February, so travelers with larger rigs should check conditions before departure.
How to book
Virginia state park sites use one central system. Creekside at Hungry Mother operates year-round and accepts reservations up to 11 months in advance through the Virginia State Parks reservation system, with guests booking specific site numbers. Book early for holiday weekends and any summer Friday or Saturday.
West Virginia state parks are handled separately. The Panther State Forest campground can be reserved online, by phone, or at the campground office, with a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday and a one-night minimum Sunday through Thursday. The 60-person Group Camp rents by the week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and requires advance contact with the forest office.
Private parks near Richlands, including Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park, Creek Side RV Park, and Laurel Creek RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. ATV riders staying at Southern Gap should confirm Spearhead Trails permit availability when they book.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in this region are mountain sites: wooded, sometimes sloped, and cut by creeks. At Creekside, the 19 paved sites each have electric and water hookups, a fire ring, and a picnic table, with a bathhouse offering universally accessible facilities and seasonal laundry service. RVs over 30 feet are not permitted at Creekside, and 50-amp service is available at Camp Burson instead.
Panther is more rustic. The campground has six sites along Panther Creek with electrical hookups, picnic tables, and fireplaces, with potable water available at the park office about 2.5 miles from the campground, plus pit toilets and a hand-pump well.
Private parks such as Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park offer a fuller service level, with full hook-up pull-through RV sites and primitive tent camping, complemented by a bathhouse that includes showers, laundry facilities, and restrooms.
