Campgrounds and RV parks near Rocky Mount, VA

Rocky Mount sits in Franklin County in Virginia's Blue Ridge foothills, roughly halfway between Roanoke and Martinsville. The town works as a practical basecamp for RV trips centered on two major water bodies: Smith Mountain Lake to the north and Philpott Lake to the south. Both are ringed by public campgrounds and private RV parks that draw families through the warm-weather months. Smith Mountain Lake is the second-largest freshwater lake in Virginia, with heavy use for fishing, boating, and swimming. Philpott Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir covering roughly 3,000 acres of water and 6,000 acres of surrounding land, with a natural shoreline and clear water. Fairy Stone State Park adjoins Philpott Reservoir and features a 168-acre lake of its own. RV options within a short drive of Rocky Mount include Goose Dam Campground, Blue Ridge Campgroud and Marina, Smith River RV Park, the Equestrian campground at Fairy Stone State Park, and Smith Mountain Campground. Together they cover full-hookup RV sites, lakefront loops, and horse-friendly camping.

Virginia State Parks, including Fairy Stone and Smith Mountain Lake, use a single reservation system. Sites can be booked online through reservevaparks.com or by phone at 1-800-933-PARK, and reservations open up to 11 months in advance. Half of the standard RV and tent sites at Fairy Stone are held for first-come, first-served arrivals. Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Philpott Lake, including Goose Dam Campground and Goose Point, reserve through Recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777. Lakefront loops book out earliest, so peak-summer weekends should be locked in as far ahead as the booking window allows. Private parks such as Blue Ridge Campgroud and Marina, Smith River RV Park, and Smith Mountain Campground handle bookings directly through their operators. Federal senior and access passes reduce fees at Corps sites but do not apply to state parks or private campgrounds.
