Campgrounds near Rural Retreat, Virginia
Rural Retreat sits in Wythe County in southwest Virginia, close to Interstate 81 and within easy driving distance of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The town works well as a base for RV travellers heading to Hungry Mother State Park, Grayson Highlands State Park, and the Virginia Creeper Trail.
Campground options range from private RV parks to state park and national forest sites. Deer Trail Park and Campground inc. and Wytheville KOA Holiday cater to travellers who want full hookups and family amenities. Creekside - Hungry Mother State Park offers electric sites near the water at one of Virginia's original state parks, while Grayson Highlands State Park runs a high-elevation campground with electric and water sites near the Appalachian Trail. Iron Mountain Horse Camp caters to equestrian travellers with electric and water hookups plus stalls.
Elevations across the area run from valley lowlands to peaks above five thousand feet, so temperatures and conditions vary noticeably between campgrounds even within a short drive.
Things to do near Rural Retreat
Outdoor recreation dominates the area. Hungry Mother State Park is known for a placid 108-acre lake in the mountains, with a sandy beach and bathhouse, boat rentals including canoes, kayaks, paddleboats and paddleboards, a boat launch and a universally accessible fishing pier. Bass, crappie, and catfish are common catches, and the park has miles of hiking and biking trails.
Grayson Highlands offers scenic views of alpine-like peaks more than 5,000 feet in elevation, with a visitor center, campgrounds, and hiking trails leading to waterfalls and overlooks. The park provides year-round access to the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, and hikers on the high country trails are likely to encounter wild ponies.
The Virginia Creeper Trail is a multi-use trail that runs from Whitetop to Abingdon and is popular with bicyclists of all skill levels. The Abingdon-to-Damascus section is open, but the Whitetop-to-Damascus section remains closed following damage from Hurricane Helene, so check current status before planning a ride.

The area is a four-season destination, but amenities and access shift meaningfully through the year. Hungry Mother State Park offers full-service camping year-round in the Camp Burson area. Grayson Highlands runs on a different schedule: full-service camping is available May through October, and primitive camping with no water or bathhouse is available in March, April, and November. No camping is available at Grayson Highlands from the first Monday in December until the first Friday in March.
Summer brings the busiest crowds and warmest weather, with mid-elevation highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit and higher humidity. Late spring and early fall are the most pleasant windows for RV travel, with lower bug pressure and cooler nights. Mid-April to early June and late September through mid-October tend to offer moderate temperatures.
Winter can bring snow and ice to the higher elevations near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, and some seasonal amenities close. Bathhouses and laundry facilities at state park campgrounds may be limited or closed outside the main camping season.
How to book a campsite
Reservation systems vary by campground. Virginia State Parks, including Hungry Mother and Grayson Highlands, use a central system. Reservations can be made online at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK, up to 11 months in advance, through the day before arrival. Popular summer weekends fill quickly, so booking several months out is recommended.
National forest campgrounds in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, such as Grindstone and the horse camps, are booked through Recreation.gov. Stay limits typically run 14 nights.
Private campgrounds handle bookings directly. Deer Trail Park and Campground inc., Wytheville KOA Holiday, and Iron Mountain Horse Camp all take reservations through their own websites or by phone; the KOA also uses the KOA reservation platform.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is mountainous, and cell service is unreliable across much of the area. Many carriers do not offer reliable coverage for calls, texts, or data once travellers leave Interstate 81, and coverage inside Grayson Highlands is spotty at best. Download offline maps before heading out.
Black bears are present throughout the high country. Store food, cooking gear, garbage, and toiletries out of tents, and use bear boxes where provided. Pets are allowed at Virginia state parks but must be kept on leash.
Elevation shapes what to pack. Grayson Highlands sits above 3,500 feet at its entrance and higher at the visitor center and campground, so nights run cool even in summer. Expect gravel or dirt pads at state park sites, picnic tables, fire rings, and shared bathhouses at full-service campgrounds.
