Campgrounds near Rustburg
Rustburg sits in Campbell County in the Virginia Piedmont, just south of Lynchburg and roughly 30 to 45 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The location gives RV travelers access to two very different camping styles: full-hookup private parks close to town services, and forested National Park Service sites along the Parkway ridge to the west.
Close-in options include Lynchburg RV Resort and Paradise Lake Family Campground, both oriented toward RV travelers who want hookups and family amenities. Leesville Lake Campground, LLC serves boaters and anglers on Leesville Lake, the lower reservoir of the Smith Mountain pumped-storage project. For a Parkway experience, Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday offers hookups off-Parkway, while Otter Creek Campground - Blue Ridge Parkway National Park sits directly on the Blue Ridge Parkway at its lowest elevation.
Rustburg itself is small and functions as a base for day trips to the James River, the Peaks of Otter area, Smith Mountain Lake, and downtown Lynchburg. Grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are widely available in and around Lynchburg to the north.
Things to do near Rustburg
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the main regional draw. The James River and Otter Creek recreation area has fishing in Otter Lake and several hiking trails including Trail of Trees, Otter Creek, Otter Lake Loop, and James River Canal, with the Otter Creek Trail running 3.5 miles between the campground and the James River Visitor Center. At the visitor center, guests can view a restored canal lock from the Kanawha Canal, part of the historic James River transportation route.
Water recreation centers on Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville Lake. Smith Mountain Lake State Park covers about 1,248 acres with roughly 16 miles of lakefront and offers hiking trails, shore and boat fishing, a 500-foot beach, picnic areas, RV and primitive campsites, and cabin rentals.
History and family stops in the area include the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford and downtown Lynchburg museums, all within about an hour of Rustburg.

Private parks around Lynchburg and Rustburg generally operate longer, with several open year-round for self-contained RVs.
Spring brings the region's wettest stretch, with frequent thunderstorms in April and May and heavy tree pollen. Summer is warm and humid in the Piedmont but noticeably cooler up on the Parkway ridge, making Otter Creek a common heat-relief pick. Bookings peak from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and again during October leaf season, when Parkway sites fill first.
Fall offers some of the most reliable weather for RV travel: cooler nights, lower humidity, and peak color at Parkway elevations in mid to late October. Winter is mild in Rustburg but cold on the Parkway, and Parkway campgrounds close entirely for the season. Occasional ice storms and snow squalls can close the Parkway road at short notice.
How to book campgrounds near Rustburg
Reservation systems differ by campground type. Campsites at Otter Creek Campground are available on a reservation basis through Recreation.gov, up to and including the day of arrival, with select sites reservable up to six months in advance online or by calling 877-444-6777. Reservation windows and operating dates for the coming season are posted on the Blue Ridge Parkway pages at nps.gov and on Recreation.gov.
Virginia State Parks, including Smith Mountain Lake State Park, use a separate system. Reservations can be made online through the state parks portal or by calling 1-800-933-PARK.
Private parks such as Lynchburg RV Resort, Paradise Lake Family Campground, Leesville Lake Campground, LLC, and Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday book directly through their own websites or, for the KOA, the KOA reservation system. Summer weekends and October foliage weekends should be booked well in advance.
What to expect
Hookup expectations vary sharply. Private parks near Lynchburg typically offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Parkway sites are more primitive: Otter Creek has flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station, but no electric or water hookups at individual sites and no showers.
RV size matters. Otter Creek's Loop A driveways range roughly from 20 to 90 feet, and maximum vehicle lengths for each site are listed on Recreation.gov. The Parkway road itself is winding with low overhead clearances at some tunnels, so oversized rigs should plan the route in advance.
Cell service is spotty in the mountains and along the lakes, and stronger in and around Rustburg and Lynchburg. Firewood rules are strict: only heat-treated, certified bundled firewood may be brought onto the Parkway, so buy it at or near your destination.
