Campgrounds and RV parks near Sedley, VA

Water activities dominate the area. Blackwater rivers, farm ponds, and the millpond itself all support paddling, and Merchants Millpond State Park offers boat rentals and paddling routes through cypress groves, alongside hiking trails and fishing. The park sits at the northernmost point of the American alligator's range, so wildlife sightings are common from a canoe. History sits close by. Visitors to Chippokes tour the historic area with its antebellum mansion and outbuildings, stroll through formal gardens, and view antique equipment at the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum. The park also has a swimming pool, hiking and biking trails, and river access to the James. Day trips to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and the Virginia Beach oceanfront are all within reach, with the free Jamestown-Scotland Ferry crossing the James River to reach Surry County.

Southeastern Virginia has four distinct seasons, and the shoulder months are usually the sweet spot for RV travel. Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming dogwoods, while fall delivers crisp mornings and comfortable afternoons well into November. Both seasons see steady bookings but rarely the total sellouts of high summer holidays. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. The area's humid subtropical climate produces wetter conditions in summer, often featuring heavy downpours. Atlantic hurricane season also peaks from August through October, so travelers should track NOAA forecasts and be ready to reroute. Winter is the quietest stretch. Nights dip below freezing, but daytime highs often allow comfortable hiking. Chippokes campground operates from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, so mid-winter stays there are not an option. Note that the family campground at Merchants Millpond is closed for construction until further notice, though backpack and paddle-in sites remain open year-round.

Expect flat, easy driving on rural highways and a mix of pine woods and farmland. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the towns of Franklin, Smithfield, and Suffolk, but can drop inside state park interiors and along back roads. Site types vary widely. Chippokes has two loops totaling 51 sites, all with water and electric hookups, with Loop A suiting rigs up to 30 feet and Loop B accommodating larger rigs up to 50 feet with 20/30/50-amp service. A dump station, firewood sales, and a laundry facility are on site. Private parks in the area more commonly offer full hookups including sewer. Stock up before arriving at remote parks. Campers heading to Chippokes should bring supplies, as only a Dollar General operates nearby in Surry. Bring bug spray from late spring through early fall; the swamps and blackwater rivers are prime mosquito habitat.
