Campgrounds and RV parks near Seven Mile Ford, VA

Hungry Mother State Park anchors the local activity list. The park centers on a 108-acre lake with a sandy swim beach, boat rentals including canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, and a universally accessible fishing pier. More than 17 miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the surrounding woodlands. Grayson Highlands State Park draws visitors for its high-elevation views, access to the Appalachian Trail, and the herds of wild ponies that roam the highland balds. Hikers can reach Mount Rogers, Virginia's highest peak, from park trailheads, and bouldering and horseback riding are also popular. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34-mile rail-trail between Abingdon and Whitetop Station. The western section from Abingdon to Damascus is open and served by shuttles and bike rentals in Damascus; the eastern 17 miles from Damascus to Whitetop Station remain closed for reconstruction following Hurricane Helene damage.

Peak season in this part of Virginia runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with warm days, active swim beaches, and full-service campgrounds. Weekends fill quickly at both Hungry Mother and Grayson Highlands, and reservations well in advance are strongly recommended for summer stays. Shoulder seasons bring different tradeoffs. Grayson Highlands offers full-service camping May through October; in March, April, and November the campground shifts to primitive operation with no water or bath house service, and it closes entirely from the first Monday in December until the first Friday in March. At Hungry Mother, Camp Burson stays open year-round while Creekside operates on a spring-to-fall schedule. Fall color usually peaks in October across the higher elevations, and daytime temperatures at Grayson Highlands run noticeably cooler than in the valley. Winter access is limited but not closed. Roads to high-elevation trailheads can ice over, cell service is unreliable in the backcountry, and backpackers should check park updates before heading out. Portions of the Virginia Creeper Trail east of Damascus remain closed after storm damage; check current status before planning a ride.

Creekside at Hungry Mother has 19 paved sites with electric and water hookups, 20 and 30 amp service, and a bathhouse. RVs are capped at 30 feet on this loop; larger rigs use Camp Burson, which has 50 amp service and full hookups on some sites. The access road involves a sharp turn, so drivers should take it slow. Grayson Highlands sits at the highest elevation of any Virginia state park and is reached by winding mountain roads. Larger rigs should plan the approach carefully. Hickory Ridge has electric and water sites up to 40 feet, primitive tent sites, a bunkhouse, and four yurts, with a separate horse camping area at Chestnut Hollow. Cell service is unreliable across much of this area, including inside Hungry Mother and throughout the Grayson Highlands high country. Downloading offline maps before arrival is a good idea. Firewood should be purchased locally rather than transported in, per Virginia's firewood quarantine guidance.
