Campgrounds near South Hill, Virginia
South Hill sits in Mecklenburg County in southern Virginia, just off I-85 and within a short drive of two of the region's biggest reservoirs: Lake Gaston and John H. Kerr Reservoir (also called Buggs Island Lake). Lake Gaston has over 20,000 acres of water and more than 350 miles of shoreline, while John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000-acre lake straddling the North Carolina and Virginia border. Together the two lakes anchor most of the RV camping in the area.
On the Lake Gaston side, Lake Gaston Americamps sits in Bracey, Virginia, a short drive south of town on the north shore of the lake, a few miles east of I-85 exit 4. Other Lake Gaston options include Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort and The Club Resort at Lake Gaston, which is a members-oriented property.
South of the state line, Kerr Lake State Recreation Area operates multiple campgrounds around the reservoir. Kimball Point and Satterwhite Point are the two closest access areas to South Hill, and both offer lakefront sites with boat access.
Things to do near South Hill
Water activities drive most trips. Lake Gaston is stocked with game fish including striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and several catfish species, with walleye, yellow perch, and chain pickerel also caught. A valid Virginia or North Carolina freshwater fishing license permits fishing in the lake in either state, from boats or shore. Kerr Lake draws serious anglers too, with tournaments regularly targeting largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish. A NC or VA freshwater fishing license is required to fish in Kerr Lake.
Families gravitate to the swim beaches. Designated swim areas are open seasonally at several Kerr Lake access points, and short trails run through the recreation area. Off the water, South Hill has small-town museums and local wineries within easy driving distance.

Summer is peak season on both lakes. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill early at Kerr Lake's waterfront sites, and demand at Kimball Point in particular is heavy. Kerr Lake State Recreation Area sites are on a rolling six-month reservation window through ReserveAmerica, and popular summer weekends often book the moment that window opens. Summers here run hot and humid, with July daily highs commonly near 90°F.
Shoulder seasons offer easier bookings and comfortable temperatures. Spring and fall bring cooler weather and thinner crowds. RV travelers should note Virginia's 4 PM Burning Law, which runs February 15 through April 30 each year: open-air burning within 300 feet of woods or dry grass is prohibited before 4 p.m., with fires allowed only between 4 p.m. and midnight.
Winter is the quietest stretch. Most Kerr Lake campgrounds are open from spring into the fall, though Nutbush, J.C. Cooper, and Satterwhite Point traditionally stay open year-round, and Lake Gaston Americamps also operates year-round.
How to book campgrounds near South Hill
Kerr Lake State Recreation Area sites, including Kimball Point and Satterwhite Point, are on the North Carolina State Parks reservation platform. Campers can reserve a campsite in advance through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance, and popular summer weekends typically go the moment the six-month window opens.
Private parks such as Lake Gaston Americamps and Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and members-only properties like The Club Resort at Lake Gaston require membership status to book.
Check gate hours before arrival. The front gate at Kerr Lake is closed and locked at posted closing times, with no exiting or entering the gate after this time.
What to expect on the ground
Most campgrounds in the area are lake-focused, with boat ramps, swim access, and wooded sites. Kerr Lake sites typically offer boat launch ramps, picnic areas, swim beaches, bathhouses, restrooms with flush toilets, showers, dump stations, trash collection, camp hosts, and playgrounds. There are no sewer hookups on any Kerr Lake campsite; dumping black or gray water at the campsite is prohibited, but a dump station is provided in the campground. Sites are limited to one RV and one tent, one pop-up and one tent, or two tents.
Expect a mix of overnight travelers and long-term seasonal campers at the private Lake Gaston parks, which offer a range of hookup levels including electric, water, and some full-hookup sites.
Bring firewood locally to avoid moving invasive pests, and expect cell service to be spotty at some Kerr Lake access areas.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near South Hill, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in South Hill, VA?
An RV rental in South Hill is one of the most affordable ways to explore Southern Virginia's lake country. On RVezy, towable trailers around South Hill typically average about $125-$165 a night, while drivable motorhomes generally run closer to $200-$275 a night, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts. If you're looking for a cheap RV rental in South Hill, filter by travel trailers, book mid-week, and aim for the May or September shoulder season when Kerr Lake is still warm but demand dips. Pro tip: pairing a lower-priced trailer with a Corps of Engineers campsite at Rudds Creek Park keeps your whole Lake Country trip well under budget.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Hill%2C%20VirginiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in South Hill, Virginia?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Hill, VA. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, motorhomes, or travel trailers used recreationally, even larger Class A coaches. To be an approved driver on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older and upload a photo of your valid driver's license during booking so the platform can verify your ID. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country along with your home license. That's it, you're cleared to cruise down I-85 toward Buggs Island Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in South Hill booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward Kerr Lake or Lake Gaston with peace of mind. During checkout, you choose from renter protection plan tiers so you can pick the level of coverage that fits your trip. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the RV, while roadside assistance handles things like tire issues, lockouts, jump starts, and tows. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it removes the biggest worries first-time renters have. Book with confidence and focus on the fishing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book my South Hill RV rental?
Life happens, and RVezy is built for that. RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy that applies to every booking, so the rules are consistent no matter which host you choose. There is a free cancellation grace period right after you book, which lets you lock in a great RV before it is gone without feeling stuck. After the grace period, refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host has to cancel, RVezy helps you rebook or refunds your booking. You will see the full policy details during checkout and in your RVezy account, so it is low-risk to reserve that Lake Gaston rig today and finalize plans later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in South Hill?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental South Hill is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see every host who welcomes dogs (and sometimes cats). Mecklenburg County's lakes are a dog's dream: Occoneechee State Park in Clarksville allows leashed pets on its 17 miles of trails and lakefront campsites, and North Bend Park at Kerr Reservoir is also pet-friendly with shaded loops and swim areas. Always pack a leash, vaccination records, and a towel for muddy paws after a Buggs Island swim. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and shedding rules.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/occoneecheeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near South Hill?
Yes, RV delivery South Hill is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to tow or drive a big rig down US-58. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at popular spots like Occoneechee State Park, Rudds Creek Recreation Area, North Bend Park, or even a private lot at Lake Gaston. They'll level the RV, connect water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are set per host and usually scale with distance. Pro tip: filter by 'Delivery' on RVezy and message two or three hosts to compare fees for your exact campground.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233563How does mileage work, and how far can I drive my South Hill RV rental?
Plenty of South Hill hosts include generous daily mileage, and some even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect if you're planning a bigger Virginia loop. Each listing on RVezy clearly shows the included miles per night and the per-mile fee for anything extra, so there are no surprises. From South Hill, you've got tons within easy range: Kerr Lake's North Bend Park is about 20 miles west, Clarksville and Occoneechee State Park are 17 miles west, Lake Gaston is about 25 miles southeast, Richmond is 90 miles north, and Raleigh, NC is roughly 75 miles south. Pro tip: estimate your total miles round-trip, then pick a listing whose mileage package matches.

recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233610When is the best time of year to rent an RV in South Hill?
Spring and fall are the sweet spot for RV camping South Hill. From late April through May, daytime highs climb from the upper 60s into the upper 70s with lower humidity, and from September into mid-October you'll see comfortable highs in the 70s-80s and stunning fall color around Kerr Lake. July and August are hot and humid (highs near 90°F with heat index often above 100°F), great for swimming and tubing but tough on un-shaded sites. Winters are mild but chilly with January lows around 30°F and occasional light snow. Pro tip: Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak season on Buggs Island Lake, so book your South Hill rig early or aim for shoulder season for cheaper rates and quieter coves.
weather.gov/akq/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be totally fine, first time renting an RV in South Hill is actually one of the easiest places to start. Mecklenburg County's roads are flat to gently rolling, traffic is light outside of I-85, and most destinations (Kerr Lake, Lake Gaston, Occoneechee State Park) are 15-30 minutes from downtown South Hill. Every RVezy host meets you at pickup for a hands-on walkthrough covering the generator, slide-outs, water hookups, propane, and dump procedure, and they're a text away during your trip. If driving still feels intimidating, choose delivery and the RV arrives ready to use. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick demo of leveling blocks before they leave, it makes camp setup five minutes flat.
virginiadot.org/travel/What happens if I break down on the road?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking in South Hill includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-58, a dead battery at North Bend Park, or a tow off I-85 is one phone call away, day or night. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app if you need help troubleshooting something simple like the water pump or awning. The closest service hubs are South Hill itself and Henderson, NC about 20 miles south, both with auto parts stores and tire shops. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and registration during your walkthrough so you have it handy if you ever need to call for help.

Pro tip: fill up in South Hill before heading to Kerr Lake, prices climb at smaller stations closer to the campgrounds.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near South Hill?
Sooner is better, especially for summer. Kerr Lake's federal Corps of Engineers campgrounds (North Bend Park, Rudds Creek, Longwood, Buffalo Park) are reserved through Recreation.gov on a rolling 6-month window, and prime summer weekends and holiday weeks at North Bend often fill the day they open. Occoneechee State Park bookings go through Virginia State Parks reservations and open up to 11 months out for some sites. For shoulder season (April, May, September, October) you can often grab a spot 2-4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if a Saturday is sold out, book Sunday through Thursday at North Bend Park, sites are easier to grab and the lake is dreamy on weekday mornings.

The town sits at the I-85 and US-58 junction, both four-lane and RV-friendly, with gentle terrain (elevations around 400-500 ft) and no mountain passes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads like Route 4 near Kerr Lake. Winter occasionally brings light snow or ice from December through February, easily avoided by checking VDOT 511. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment before the trip starts (the amount is shown clearly on the listing) and is released back to you after drop-off, assuming no damage, missing items, or extra cleaning. To avoid any deposit issues, do a video walkthrough with your host at pickup and at return, empty the black and grey tanks if your contract requires it, and refuel to the level noted. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at both ends of your South Hill trip, it is the easiest way to protect yourself.
