Campgrounds near Timberlake, Virginia
Timberlake sits just southwest of Lynchburg in central Virginia's Piedmont, within easy reach of both the James River corridor and the Blue Ridge Parkway. RV travelers use it as a base for exploring the parkway's southern Virginia mileposts, Smith Mountain Lake, and Appomattox, with most nearby campgrounds within a 30- to 45-minute drive.
Options range from full-hookup private parks to primitive National Park Service sites. Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday is located in Monroe, Virginia and sits about a mile off the Blue Ridge Parkway between mileposts 61 and 62. Otter Creek Campground is one of eight campgrounds on the Blue Ridge Parkway operated by the National Park Service, and at 777 feet it is the parkway's lowest-elevation campground.
Closer to town, Lynchburg RV Resort and Paradise Lake Family Campground cater to families wanting shorter drives and hookups, while Leesville Lake Campground, LLC offers a lakeside base southeast of Lynchburg, useful as a shoulder-season option when parkway sites are closed.
Things to do near Timberlake
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the anchor attraction. The James River and Otter Creek recreation area offers fishing in Otter Lake and hiking on trails including the Trail of Trees, Otter Creek Trail, Otter Lake Loop, and James River Canal. The Otter Creek Trail runs 3.5 miles (5.6 km) and parallels the parkway from Otter Creek Campground to the James River Visitor Center, where a restored lock from the historic Kanawha Canal is on display.
History stops sit close by. Historic downtown Lynchburg, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, and Appomattox Court House National Historical Park draw history-focused visitors. Peaks of Otter offers hiking around Abbott Lake, Natural Bridge State Park features a limestone arch and trails, and Smith Mountain Lake is a popular spot for boating, fishing, and swimming. Leesville Lake and the James River support paddling and small-boat use from spring through fall.

Peak RV season runs late spring through mid-fall. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds set the calendar: Otter Creek Campground is typically open from late May to the end of October, and Lynchburg / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Holiday operates April through November. Fall foliage in October drives the busiest weekends, and sites near the parkway fill weeks in advance.
Summer brings warm, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms typical of the Virginia Piedmont. Spring runs cool and green with steady rain and the occasional late frost into early April. Winter is the quiet season, with occasional snow and cold nights, and most parkway facilities closed.
Private parks around Lynchburg and Leesville Lake give RV travelers a shoulder-season option when Otter Creek and other seasonal parks are shut. The KOA pool operates Memorial Day through Labor Day.

How to book campgrounds near Timberlake
Reservation systems vary by operator. Sites at Otter Creek Campground can be reserved up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777, with a small number held for first-come, first-served walk-ups. First-come, first-served availability is not tracked online and must be checked at the campground kiosk.
Private parks book directly. The KOA in Monroe uses koa.com or its call center, and RV reservations require seven days advance notice for cancellation, with cancellations inside that window forfeiting the deposit. For Leesville Lake Campground, Paradise Lake Family Campground, and Lynchburg RV Resort, contact the operator directly. For fall-foliage weekends and holiday stretches, book two to three months out.
What to expect on-site
Expect a wide range of amenity levels. Parkway campgrounds are basic: each loop at Otter Creek has a restroom building with modern toilets and sinks but no showers or hot water, and no sites have electricity or water hookups. The campground has two loops totaling 68 sites, with a dump station and drinking water available seasonally.
Private parks offer full services. The Monroe KOA has pull-through sites up to 80 feet, a seasonal pool, a dog park, laundry, and a general store. Nearby private parks around Lynchburg and Leesville Lake typically add full hookups, bathhouses, and Wi-Fi.
On the Blue Ridge Parkway, only heat-treated firewood in its original packaging bearing a USDA or state department of agriculture seal may be brought onto the parkway, though campers may still collect dead and down wood in the immediate vicinity of campgrounds and picnic areas. Cell coverage is spotty at higher elevations.

Fuel is one of the easier things to plan for. Virginia gas prices typically sit slightly below the national average, with regular unleaded around $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon in the Lynchburg area. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for campervans, and around 12 to 16 MPG for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Fill up in Timberlake or Forest before heading onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, where there are no gas stations for long stretches.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=VAHow far in advance should I book a campground near Timberlake?
Here's the insider playbook. Virginia State Parks like Smith Mountain Lake and Holliday Lake open reservations 11 months in advance through the Virginia State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends often book within hours of release. For Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds like Peaks of Otter and Otter Creek, use Recreation.gov and book 4 to 6 months ahead for fall foliage weekends. Private RV parks like Wildwood usually have more flexibility, often 2 to 4 weeks out. If you strike out on weekends, target Sunday through Thursday stays for availability at almost every park near Timberlake, often at lower rates, and the Parkway is wonderfully quiet midweek.

Driving an RV around Timberlake is very manageable, even for first-timers. The area sits just outside Lynchburg, with Route 460, Route 29, and Route 221 offering wide, well-maintained lanes for getting in and out of town. Once you head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, expect winding two-lane roads with a 45 MPH limit, occasional 9 to 12 foot tunnel clearances (fine for almost every RV on RVezy), and steep grades on the climb to Peaks of Otter. Avoid downtown Lynchburg's narrow historic streets in anything over 25 feet. Pro tip: check VDOT 511 before you leave for real-time updates on Parkway closures, which can happen after winter storms or fall leaf-peeping traffic jams.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Timberlake,%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
The payment process on RVezy is simple and secure. You'll pay your full booking total (rental, fees, protection, taxes) through the platform when you book, never directly to the host in cash or off-platform. A separate refundable security deposit is held by RVezy before pickup, with the amount depending on the RV's value, and it's released back to your card within a few days of a smooth drop-off. To avoid issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's mileage and generator rules, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels. Use a credit card so the deposit hold doesn't tie up your checking account during your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV around Timberlake?
You've got plenty of legal options. For overnight stays, head to a campground or RV park like Wildwood in Goode, Smith Mountain Lake State Park, or Holliday Lake State Park, all within about a 45-minute drive of Timberlake. Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along Route 29 allow one-night RV parking, but always call the store manager first to confirm. Dispersed camping is allowed on George Washington and Jefferson National Forest land about an hour west, where you can stay free for up to 14 days. Avoid parking overnight on Timberlake residential streets or in Lynchburg city lots. A real campsite at Smith Mountain Lake is just 35 miles away and worth every penny.
