Campgrounds and RV parks near Wise, VA

Wise sits in the coalfields region of far southwestern Virginia, high in the Cumberland Mountains and within about an hour of the Kentucky and Tennessee borders. The surrounding country is steep, wooded, and threaded with rivers and gorges, which shapes where RV travelers can actually park a rig. Most developed camping is clustered around state and interstate parks and a handful of private RV parks along river valleys. Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground in nearby Big Stone Gap is the closest full-hookup option, with pull-through sites and 30- and 50-amp service. Camp Mountventures and Holston Hideaway offer smaller, more rustic settings within the region. Natural Tunnel State Park, about an hour south near Duffield, has two electric-and-water hookup campgrounds totaling 34 sites plus a primitive tent area, cabins, yurts, and a lodge. For the largest campground in the area, Breaks Interstate Park straddles the Virginia-Kentucky line and holds 138 sites spread across four loops above the Russell Fork gorge.

Natural Tunnel State Park is reserved through the Virginia State Parks system at reservevaparks.com, with campsites, cabins, yurts, and the lodge bookable up to 11 months in advance. Primitive tent sites require a phone reservation with the park office. During prime season, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, cabin stays are week-long, with a two-night minimum outside prime season. Breaks Interstate Park uses its own reservation system on breakspark.com, powered by Firefly Reservations, rather than the Virginia State Parks portal, because it is jointly operated by Virginia and Kentucky. Large rigs should call the park before booking to confirm the loop can accommodate them. Private parks like Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground, Holston Hideaway, and Camp Mountventures take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekends in peak summer and fall book out early, so lock in dates as far ahead as possible.
