Summer is the prime window. Days are warm and dry, and all sites are open. July is the driest month in the Bremerton area, with rain falling only about six days and totaling roughly 18 mm of precipitation. Reservations fill quickly at the state parks, especially for waterfront and full-hookup sites, so book well ahead. Spring brings cooler temperatures and a noticeable rhododendron bloom. Scenic Beach's seasonal rhododendron displays typically peak from late April through June, making spring and early summer a good window for combining botanical viewing with mountain scenery. Fall stays mild into October before rainfall ramps up sharply in November, when the area sees its wettest month. Winter camping is limited but available at the year-round state parks. At Scenic Beach, sites 1-25 are available for reservations year-round, while sites 26-50 close for the winter season from November 1 through March 31. Vehicle access to Green Mountain Horse Camp is not available year-round, and the camp is open for camping on weekends only, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

How to book a site near Bangor

Washington State Parks campgrounds use the Washington Going to Camp reservation system. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance from the booking date. Both Scenic Beach State Park and Kitsap Memorial State Park accept reservations through this system, with some sites held for first-come, first-served use during shoulder seasons. A Discover Pass is required for vehicle entry at all Washington State Parks. DNR sites operate differently. Campsites at DNR campgrounds are available first-come, first-served at no additional cost with the purchase of a Discover Pass. Green Mountain Horse Camp follows this model and accepts no reservations. Private parks such as Cove RV Park and Store and Cedar Glen RV Park book directly with the property. Call ahead during summer weekends and holidays.

What to expect on-site

State park sites in the area are wooded with mixed shade. Kitsap Memorial has year-round camping with 19 standard sites, three partial-hookup sites, eight full-hookup sites, three hiker/biker sites, and four cabins, along with restrooms and showers. The park accommodates RVs up to about 40 feet with full hookups, though not all sites can fit larger rigs. Scenic Beach is more rustic for big rigs. The park has 50 standard campsites, two hiker/biker sites, a dump station, restrooms, and showers, with 18 pull-through sites that accommodate units up to roughly 32 feet and no hookups. Green Mountain Horse Camp is primitive: bring your own water, expect vault toilets, and plan for spotty cell service in the DNR forest. Cell service is generally reliable at the waterfront parks.
